In this EHNW salon designed for those old and new to the field, participants have a collective conversation about this and alternative understandings of what it means to actually “help” someone. Through an Existential-Humanistic framework, attendees will consider aspects of helping that expand on and diverge from the dominant managed care model.

This day-long workshop will explore how anxiety is hitting the roof in our practices and world precisely because we so often fail to address the underlying or primal anxiety that fuels greater and more destructive anxiety. That which Kirk terms “life-enhancing anxiety,” is a level of anxiety that enables us to live with and make the best of the depth and mystery of existence. Or to put it more concretely, it fosters our capacity to live more on the edge of wonder and discovery rather than terror and overwhelm.
Reflecting on his experiences and observations as an artist and mental health counselor, Joaquin Lopez, LPC, will present ideas that construct what he coins as a drama-informed perspective toward life. This perspective is garnered from years of producing storytelling events about local community members and noticing common themes in their trials and tribulations. He explores the power of storytelling as a tool rooted in existential-humanistic theory for both community and personal healing. Joaquin will draw from real life examples in working with adults in and outside counseling office.
In this session, participants will explore interventions in sex therapy, engaging in thoughtful discourse that honors the complexity and diversity of human sexuality.
These EHNW salons provide a safe and inclusive space for individuals to explore desires, fears, and questions surrounding sexuality. Rooted in the existential-humanistic approach, we embrace the belief that each person possesses the capacity for self-awareness, personal growth, and meaningful connection.
This workshop explores what is distinctive about an existential approach to supervision. In attempting to do so, it will address several key aspects in the practice of existential therapy that can be transposed to supervision from an existential therapy perspective. As well as lecture and discussion, participants will have opportunity to take part in a live demonstration of this approach to supervision.
This presentation focuses on the experience of “redemptive suffering,” that is, psychological pain and suffering in response to adversity that become constructively transformative and growth-producing rather than only destructive. Through exploring the core dynamics of intentionality and meaning-creation, participants will see how painful life experiences can be transformed into empowering sources of growth by reinterpreting their essential meaning for the suffering individual. Specifically, this involves a critical choice to experience painful adversity in terms of an actively-thriving gratitude rather than a sense of passive victimization.
In the therapeutic encounter, the therapist and the client are not self-contained separate
elements, but a configuration of the interacting forces of a field. There is no such thing as a
separate environment or a separate individual. [Or as Winnicott famously once said: “There is
no such thing as a baby, only a baby and a someone”] At every moment a person is part of a
field. His behavior and development is a function of this field.
Fostering Authenticity: Character Analytic and Somatic Interventions in Contemporary Orgone (Reichian) Therapy

All humanistic and existentially based therapies share the understanding that many of the symptoms that clients bring to therapy stem from their inability to live an authentic life. The fostering of authenticity is therefore one of their primary goals. Contemporary Orgone (Reichian) Therapy, a humanistic/existential therapeutic approach based upon the integration of Wilhelm Reich’s character analytic and bioenergetic therapy, gestalt therapy, person-centered therapy and self psychology, approaches this endeavor through addressing the cognitive, emotional, behavioral and somatic defenses that prevent one from making full contact with their authenticity.
