ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Existential-phenomenological approaches continue to attract more and more mental health professionals from diverse orientations to enliven their work with this experiential way of understanding the human experience of their clients.

A wide-range of practitioners with different therapeutic orientations are exploring this approach as a way to reach their clients in a deeper way. At the same time, its potential is sometimes not easily recognized, and is even seen as a challenge to more “traditional” approaches. An existential-phenomenological approach is an invitation to more deeply understand the experience of another from an inter-relational stance that not only values, but admires the mystery of persons as well as existence itself.

In this workshop, participants will explore the main themes of this existential-phenomenological approach in a way that is accessible and in close contact to our subjective experience. At its root, this approach invites us to begin the journey from our own subjective experience.

Participants will also deepen our understanding to the varying levels of contact involved in this approach and gain a better understanding of the worldview, attitudes, and methods that makes up this approach.

This workshop will be of help for mental health therapists of any orientation that wish to widen their scope of more deeply understanding another person. It will also be helpful for seasoned as well as newer therapists that are looking to deepen their comprehension and application of the existential-phenomenological approach.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

Day 1: Friday, October 7th, 2022 6pm-9pm

Inspired by Gabriel Roth’s five rhythms, on day one we will explore existence as being made of encounters, relations and dialogues with the world, as well as with ourselves and others.

This will consist of a reflection with movement accompanied by meaningful music and the energy generated by the attendees.

This will be an experiential work where attendees are invited to bring comfortable clothing to dance or move around the room. Please note that there is no obligation to participate in any particular way, in the spirit of this approach, honor your subjective experience as it unfolds.

This evening session available as stand alone module.

Day 2: Saturday, October 8th, 2022 9am-5pm

This day will mainly consist of lecture from Dr. Martinez-Robles where he will integrate various experiential exercises and reflections conducted in small groups.

This day will also include a live therapy demonstration where Dr. Martinez-Robles and a volunteer will carry out a full therapy session from this existential-phenomenological perspective.

Day 3: Sunday, October 9th, 9am-12pm

In our final day of this workshop, Dr. Martinez-Robles will conclude the lecture portion and we’ll also focus on questions from the attendees. Question themes can be related to the theoretical, professional applications, and/or related to the previous days’ demonstration. Through the Q&A, we hope to further deepen different aspects of this vibrant approach to being with another person.
