The discussion will be facilitated by EHNW board members\, including Bob Edelstein and Dave Fischer. Please feel free to bring a current case for which you would like some consultation\, or listen to others\, ask questions\, and contribute your comments. Due to time considerations\, not every case will likely be discussed. Our hope in hosting these salons is to create a space for practitioners and members of the EH community to gather\, socialize\, and explore meaningful topics. The conversation will be salon-style where participants share what is present for them as the conversation emerges. BiographyI am passionate about the existential-humanistic perspective in both my personal and professional life. To me\, the perspective embraces all of what it means to exist and values each unique\, individual journey. I value that we always have a choice to change our attitude and behavior\, even in the most limited of conditions or circumstances. I take on the powerful responsibility that our choice matters in that we impact the world by our feelings\, thoughts and actions. This perspective also embraces that as human beings we are always moving towards health and wholeness\, both individually and collectively. BiographyDave is a licensed psychologist\, providing compassionate and patient-centered therapy in a primary care setting. He completed a doctorate in clinical psychology and a post-doctoral fellowship in health psychology in the integrated primary care model. He currently works for Premise Health Care\, at Intel Health for Life Centers and sees clients that are Intel employees or their dependents. He engages in brief interventions\, diagnostic evaluations\, and ongoing psychotherapy for individuals\, couples\, and adolescents. Dave has experience with multi-cultural patients and can provide therapy in Spanish if needed\, as he has lived and traveled throughout Latin America. Dave has also taught a variety of psychology courses at several colleges and universities\, including coursework in clinical\, abnormal\, group\, adolescent and basic psychology. Dave received a year of specialized training and conducted academic research in psychotherapy with persons living with HIV. As a member of the American Psychological Association and board member of Existential-Humanistic Northwest\, he brings and makes space for a broad range of perspectives to each client encounter. Please refer questions to Ryan Brown via the EHNW Contact Form.

SUMMARY:Recommended: Kirk Schneider's EDD at MIP
DESCRIPTION:The Experiential Democracy Dialogue: Using Depth Psychology to Address Cultural and Political Divides\n\n\n\nInstructor: Kirk J. Schneider\, Ph.D Host: Manhattan Institute of Psychoanalysis\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCourse Description and Overview:This workshop will provide skills for therapists who are challenged by the cultural and political stances of their clients and how those stances manifest and potentially affect the therapeutic relationship. Dr. Schneider will introduce the concept of the “polarized mind” (the fixation on a single point of view to the utter exclusion of competing points of view)\, which he developed based on extensive existential-depth and social-psychological research on the roots of human destructiveness. Emerging from concern about the destructive effects of intra-psychic and societal polarization\, along with a resultant deep interest in helping individuals and communities depolarize\, Dr. Schneider spent over fifteen years developing a one-on-one depolarization dialogue format called “Experiential Democracy Dialogue” (detailed in his book The Depolarizing of America: A Guidebook for Social Healing). This approach is a hybrid of his experience as a leading figure in the existential-humanistic psychological and psychotherapeutic movements with his experience as a trained moderator for the nation-wide organization called “Braver Angels.” Braver Angels is a grass-roots citizens’ movement that uses a highly structured group (and individual) format to bring self-identified liberals and conservatives together for “living room” style dialogues. \n\n\n\nExperiential Democracy Dialogue\, as a one-on-one conflict mediation format\, provides a unique resource for clinicians struggling with the ways that socio-cultural and political differences show up in the therapeutic encounter. Techniques and principles from this approach can be utilized by therapists to more adaptively work with the aforementioned challenges as they arise in therapy by helping them develop skills to be more present to clients from highly contrasting backgrounds\, develop greater capacities to empathize with and find common ground with such clients\, and develop greater capacities to experience curiosity and enhance exploration with such clients who formerly elicited anguish or even revulsion. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, Dr. Schneider will outline five phases of Experiential Democracy Dialogue – Guided Visualization\, Providing Background\, Taking a Stance\, Identifying Stereotypes and Results/Discovery – and then demonstrate how to employ Experiential Democracy Dialogue in the therapeutic relationship. Participants will then be placed into dyads to role-play therapist-client\, with the “therapist” leading the pair through the five phases. Participants will then be able to reflect on and begin to integrate how utilizing Experiential Democracy Dialogue techniques and core concepts can help strengthen their therapeutic relationships with clients who hold strong cultural and political differences from them. \n\n\n\nDate/Time: Feb. 12\, 1pm-4pm EST; 10am-1pm PST \n\n\n\nLocation: Zoom \n\n\n\nCost: $90 and candidates $60 (Proof of Institute affiliation required.)  CE: 3 \n\n\n\nManhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis is recognized by the New York State Education Department as an approved provider of continuing education for LCSW\, LMSW\, LCAT\, LMHC and Licensed Psychologists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKirk J. Schneider\, PhD\, is a licensed psychologist and leading spokesperson for contemporary existential-humanistic psychology. Dr. Schneider is a cofounder and current president of the Existential-Humanistic Institute (an award-winning psychotherapy training center)\, Council Member and Candidate for President of the American Psychological Association (APA)\, past president (2015-2016) of the Society for Humanistic Psychology (Division 32) of the APA\, recent past editor of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology (2005-2012)\, a trained moderator for the conflict mediation group Braver Angels\, and an adjunct faculty member at Saybrook University and Teachers College\, Columbia University. Dr. Schneider is also an Honorary Member of the Society for Existential Analysis and the East European Association for Existential Therapy. His work on existential-integrative psychotherapy has been featured in a special issue of the Journal of Psychotherapy Integration (March\, 2016) and is the inspiration for the psychotherapy training program of the Living Institute\, Toronto\, Canada. A Fellow of five Divisions of the APA\, Dr. Schneider has published over 200 articles\, interviews and chapters and has authored or edited 13 books including The Spirituality of Awe\, The Polarized Mind\, Awakening to Awe\, The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology\, Existential-Humanistic Therapy\, Existential-Integrative Psychotherapy\, The Wiley World Handbook of Existential Therapy\, and The Depolarizing of America:  A Guidebook for Social Healing. Dr. Schneider’s work has been featured in Scientific American\, the New York Times\, Psychology Today and many other health and psychology outlets.

SUMMARY:Recommended: Feb EHNW Lunch n Learn
DESCRIPTION:Buddhism and Existential-Humanistic Therapy: The Importance of Interconnection\n\n\n\n Presented by Chuck Craytor\, LPC Friday\, February 11th\, 2022 1:00pm – 2:30pm Pacific Time Zoom Webinar (logon instructions sent with registration confirmation) Free to all EHNW Affiliates$10 for Non-Affiliates  \n\n\n\nDescriptionWe live in a world of rapid change and an increasing sense of uncertainty. There is a deepening sense of isolation\, resulting in more and more people retreating into their small tribe and lesser self. In my talk\, we will explore the Buddhist teaching of Dependent Origination and its relationship with the Existential-Humanistic perspective. This talk will include research I conducted in graduate school while working in Moldova and how the EH perspective influences my work\, even before I knew what EH was.  BiographyFor over twenty-five years\, Chuck has worked in personal coaching\, workshop facilitation\, and leadership development. He has worked with private\, non-profit\, and governmental organizations. Chuck completed graduate school in clinical mental health counseling in 2012 and has been in private practice since then. His practice of Buddhism began while living in Japan from 1975-77\, and he has been practicing since then. Chuck has been pulled forward throughout his journey by committing to transforming adversity into opportunities to develop resiliency\, peace\, and harmonious connections with our natural environment and others. This commitment has provided the opportunity to work with people locally\, nationally\, and internationally as far away as Moldova. Please refer questions to Dave Fischer through the EHNW Contact Form.

SUMMARY:Depolarizing Therapeutic Presence w/ Kirk Schneider\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Depolarizing Therapeutic Presence: Utilizing Concepts of the “Experiential Democracy Dialogue” to Help Therapists Reduce Polarization With Clients\n\n\n\nDeveloped and Facilitated by EHI Core Instructor: Kirk Schneider\, PhD\, EHI President \n\n\n\nDate: Saturday\, January 22\, 2021 \n\n\n\nTime: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm Pacific Time Zone /Sign in to waiting room at 9:45am  \n\n\n\nOnline: via Zoom and Zoom Breakout Rooms  \n\n\n\n3 CE hours available(live presentation participation)*. Fee: $18.50. Please contact us for more info regarding the course. \n\n\n\nRegistration Fee: Cost: $35 General/Professional; $20 Student/Elder: $10 Economic Hardship/Equity;No one will be turned away due to lack of funds—please reach out to Michelle via contact form at the bottom of page for assistance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Page\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the final webinar in our Depolarization Series. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will provide skills for therapists who are challenged by the cultural and political stances of their clients and want to more effectively work through their own charged internal reactions that could adversely affect the therapeutic relationship. \n\n\n\nDr. Schneider will introduce the concept of the “polarized mind” (the fixation on a single point of view to the utter exclusion of competing points of view)\, which he developed based on extensive existential-depth and social-psychological research on the roots of human destructiveness. Emerging from concern about the destructive effects of intra-psychic and societal polarization\, along with a deep interest in helping individuals and communities depolarize\, Dr. Schneider spent over fifteen years developing a one-on-one depolarization dialogue format called the “Experiential Democracy Dialogue” (detailed in his book\, The Depolarizing of America: A Guidebook for Social Healing). \n\n\n\nAs a conflict mediation approach that is informed by components of existential-humanistic psychotherapy\, the Experiential Democracy Dialogue is a unique resource for clinicians struggling with the ways that socio-cultural and political differences affect them in the therapeutic encounter. These struggles might even be more intense today than previously\, given the context of intense socio-political polarization\, potentially making it even harder for therapists to sit with difference with their clients. Though the actual format of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue is not in and of itself suitable to be used between therapist and client\, techniques and concepts from this approach can be utilized by therapists to more adaptively work with their own challenging and charged feelings as they arise in therapy\, mainly by helping them develop skills to be more present to clients from highly contrasting backgrounds\, develop greater capacities to empathize with and find common ground with such clients\, and develop greater capacities to experience curiosity and enhance exploration with such clients who formerly elicited anguish or even revulsion. The concept and practice of “presence” plays a central role in this process and will be emphasized by Dr. Schneider. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, Dr. Schneider will outline five phases of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue – Guided Visualization\, Providing Background\, Taking a Stance\, Identifying Stereotypes and Results/Discovery – and then demonstrate how going through these phases can help therapists feel a greater openness toward and gain a greater understanding of their clients. Participants will then be placed into dyads to go through this process together. Participants will then be able to reflect on and begin to integrate how utilizing Experiential Democracy Dialogue techniques and core concepts can help strengthen their therapeutic relationships with clients who hold strong cultural and political differences from them. \n\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\n\n\nParticipants will be able to: \n\n\n\nDefine the use of “presence” in the Experiential Democracy DialogueIdentify two (2) concepts of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue that they can use to depolarize in relationship to clients’ beliefsList two (2) ways that utilizing the Experiential Democracy Dialogue techniques can strengthen the therapeutic relationship\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Today!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Continuing Education Info\n\n\n\n3 CEs Approved. SUMMARY:Recommended: Lunch and Learn w/ EHNW
DESCRIPTION:Join Our Friends at EHNW in Portland for a Lunch and Learn! \nHumanistic Psychotherapy and the Art of Living\nFacilitator: Carol Swanson\, LCSW \nDate: Friday\, December 10\, 2021 \nTime: 1pm-2:30pm\, Pacific; Online by Zoom \nRegistration Fees: Free for EHNW Affiliate $10-Non-Affiliate \nPresentation Host: Existential Humanistic NorthWest (EHNW in Portland) \nWe live in a world of fragile things: fragile selves\, fragile psyches\, fragile bodies. Yet even with this uncertainty and fragility\, we are asked to approach our lives with tenacity\, grace and wisdom. As existential humanistic therapists we encounter the uncertainty and complexity in our clinical work everyday. We are asked to suffer alongside our clients\, and to help them increase their capacities for living\, and hopefully for a more creative life. An important capacity we need as therapists and we can lend to our clients is knowing that life’s unpredictability exceeds our capacity to control it\, that a degree of insecurity is an existential predicament and not a neurotic issue. In this presentation\, and conversation I want to put forward how we may never be successful in cultivating a unitary and internally consistent self. I pose the question: How do we develop the acceptance and tolerance for a degree of instability in our lives? \nBio: Carol Swanson has been in private practice in Portland\, OR for forty years. She co-founded the Portland Gestalt Therapy Training Institute and has trained therapists in the US\, Europe and Australia. Her current interest is studying philosophical resources for clinical work.\nShe has authored several articles published for Gestalt journals. When not in the Zoom room you can find her in the garden\, cycling\, hiking\, paddling her kayak or paddle board or camping.Existential-Humanistic Institute Northwest (EHNW). \nRegister With EHNW Here>> \nPlease Note: this event is not being hosted by EHI. SUMMARY:Recommended: EHNW Student Salon
DESCRIPTION:Join Our Friends at EHNW in Portland for a Fall Student Salon! \nStudent Salon: I don’t know is the only thing I can know: Tolerating ambiguity and holding our theories lightly in therapy.\nHow do you know what you know? How certain are you of your knowledge\, your approach\, your treatment plan? If these questions unsettle\, hooray! Therapy unsettles us. Experienced and wise therapists are fallibilists\, recognizing that our understanding of anything or anyone is only a perspective within a horizon limited by our own experience. SUMMARY:Working with Nonverbal Communication to Navigate Conflict
DESCRIPTION:This Workshop is Canceled\nAugust 19th Update: Due to unforeseen circumstances this workshop has been canceled. We are looking forward to rescheduling this workshop in the future. When it gets rescheduled we will notify those who registered and our mailing list. Registrants will be refunded the fees paid. \nHosted by: Existential-Humanistic Institute \nDate/Time: To Be Announced \n3 CEs for live workshop attendance(pending approval)*. Fee: $18.50. For more information on CE offerings\, or to request disability accommodations\, please contact us at program@ehinstitute.org. \nCost: $35* General/Professional; $20 Student/Elder: $10 Economic Hardship \nJoin Our Mailing List to Get News About Upcoming Events\nSome of the best writers note that words\, according to Virginia Woolf\, often “miss the mark.” They can create misunderstandings\, inflame emotions\, and polarize groups of people. Maxine Sheets-Johnstone\, a phenomenologist and dancer\, advises us to go back to the “things themselves”: through detailed observation of the first language of all humans and sentient beings—movement—we can more accurately “read” other people and the world around us. \nIn this workshop\, we will look at nonverbal language as one that is authentic (“the body does not lie”). Observing the nonverbal gives shades and layers of meaning that are often obscured in solely verbal communication. In this workshop\, we will learn a simplified form of Labanotation- a movement notation system that uses existential dimensions of time\, weight\, space and flow to track the ongoing process of movement. It can also be used to track interpersonal movement as dialogue\, and even tune into the rhythms of speech. \nLearning to work with our clients with particular attention paid to their nonverbal language can help them develop a more authentic\, integrated experience of self and connect with others in more gratifying ways. Comprehending the existential dimensions of nonverbal communication can reveal whole new layers of meaning and contribute to deeper understanding and increased harmony in a troubled and conflicted world. \n \nOur Presenter:\nIlene Serlin\, PhD\, BC-DMTEHI Affiliate Instructor\nIlene Serlin is a licensed psychologist and registered dance/movement therapist in practice in San Francisco and Marin county. She is the past president of the San Francisco Psychological Association\, a Fellow of the American Psychological Association\, past-president of the Division of Humanistic Psychology. Ilene has taught at Saybrook University\, Lesley University\, UCLA\, the NY Gestalt Institute and the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich. She is the editor of Whole Person Healthcare (2007\, 3 vol.\, Praeger)\, over 100 chapters and articles on body\, art and psychotherapy\, and is on the editorial boards of PsycCritiques\, The American Journal of Dance Therapy\, The Journal of Humanistic Psychology\, Arts & Health: An International Journal of Research\, Policy and Practice\, Journal of Applied Arts and Health\, and The Humanistic Psychologist. Ilene studied Labanotation for 3 years at the Laban/Bartenieff Institute in NY with Irmgard Bartenieff\, student of Rudolf von Laban. Her research interests include existential and humanistic psychotherapy\, Buddhist and Jewish spiritual practices\, dance movement therapy and women’s issues. \nContinuing Education\n3 CEs Pending . SUMMARY:Recommended— RMHCPA Workshop: Critical Race Theory and Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Critical Race Theory and Psychotherapy Workshop\nDate:    August 21\, 2021 \nTime: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM MST (8:00-11:00 AM EST; 10:00 AM-1:00 PM CST; 11:00 AM-2:00 PM EST) \nCost:    $35 for professionals (CEs included); $25 for students (no CEs) \nPresenters: Lisa Xochitl Vallejos\, Nathaniel Granger\, Jr.\, & Louis Hoffman \nHost: Rocky Mountain Humanistic Counseling and Psychology Association \nContinuing Education: 3 CEs (pending approval) \nRegistration: https://rmhcpa.org/product/critical-race-theory-and-psychotherapy-workshop/ \nOverview \nCritical Race Theory (CRT) began in the legal field but over time has been applied in many different disciplines\, including psychology. Delgado and Stefancic (2017) briefly define the CRT movement as “a collection of activists engaged in studying and transforming the relationship among race\, racism\, and power” (p. 3). Furthermore\, they note that CRT is not a unified movement and includes many variations and differing perspectives. CRT is unified by shared questions and concerns more than specific beliefs or dogma. However\, CRT theories are consistently concerned about the problem of race\, racism\, and power and how this impacts individuals\, institutions\, and society. Furthermore\, CRT purports that to understand racial disparities and other racial issues in the United States and around the world it is necessary to consider institutional racism\, systemic racism\, and issues of power. \nRecently\, CRT has come under increased scrutiny and criticism\, including arguments that CRT should be banned from being taught in schools\, universities\, and/or other settings. Many of these criticisms misrepresent CRT\, such as purporting that CRT maintains that some people are inherently inferior or racist. \nIn the first part of this workshop\, the presenters provide an overview of the primary themes of CRT. Next\, they consider criticism of CRT\, both popular and academic\, and provide some responses to these criticisms. In responding to the criticisms\, the presenters consider which are based upon false assumptions about CRT and which reflect valid criticisms. After considering the foundations and critiques of CRT\, the presenters address how CRT can be applied in clinical and training settings. \nCEs are included in the Professional Registration; there are no CEs included with the student discount. \nProfessional: 35.00 | Student: 25.00 \n  \nPlease Note: This workshop is being held by RMHCPA \, this is not an EHI event. Please contact RMHCPA through their website/registration page if you have questions regarding this offering.

SUMMARY:Radical Authenticity: Liberating the Everyday Divided Mind
DESCRIPTION:Online Workshop w/ Ken Bradford\, PhD\nHosted by: Existential-Humanistic Institute \nDate/Time: Saturday\, July 10th 10am-1pm Pacific \nCE: Approved for 3 CE Hrs.  \nOverview & Description\nOverview and Description: The polarized mind that plays havoc politically and relationally is an extension of the everyday divided mind\, or divided self\, which gives rise to all manner of anxiety\, despair and confusion. All human conflict – outer as well as inner – arises from a singular root. Cut that root and its branches of physical tightness and psychic confusion\, leaves of relational discord and personal discontent\, and bitter fruit of feeling anxious\, depressed and irritable – perpetually wanting – dissolve. \nRadical Existential and Buddhist psychology recognize there is a basic – quite normal and innocent – split in human consciousness that divides perceived objects and others “out there” from a perceiving subject “in here.” This underlying bi-polar disorder of everyday consciousness is the object-subject split that dominates our mind by confusing projections for reality as it is. Pitting self against world\, us against them\, conscious reason against unconscious compulsion\, everyday mind oscillates between moments of self-infatuation and self-hatred. Everyday dualistic vision reifies the flux of experience to the extent we identify “me” as a being separate from being as such. The compulsive striving to defend and promote our self as a self-grounded entity severs us from the ground and innate well-being of undivided\, authentic presence. \nWhether or not political\, relational\, psychological or physical problems are solved\, it is possible to befriend impermanence – the flux of experience forever unresolved – in a way that is supple\, attuned\, creative and carefree. But only insofar as we are able to drop our ego-shields and dare genuine openness and radical freedom\, undivided in mind and untethered to our projections. \nOur Presenter\n \nKen Bradford\, PhD is a teacher\, author and contemplative yogin integrating Buddhist\, Dzogchen and Existential thought and practice. Formerly\, he maintained a psychotherapy practice in the San Francisco Bay area and was Adjunct Professor at John F. Kennedy University and California Institute of Integral Studies. Publications include numerous peer-reviewed journal articles\, most recently on “Radical Authenticity” and “Existential-Contemplative Therapy”; and books\, The I of the Other: Mindfulness-Based Diagnosis & the Question of Sanity; and Listening from the Heart of Silence: Nondual Wisdom and Psychotherapy\, Vol. 2 (with John Prendergast). \n  \n \n Register Today\n \nContinuing Education Info\n3 CEs Approved. SUMMARY:Recommended: Kristine Mann Library - Psychoanalytic Research Award Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Encounters with the Liberal or Conservative Other: A Jungian Phenomenological Analysis of Individuation through Conflict\nOpen to the Interested Public!\nDescriptionCarly Larson Solome\, clinical psychology doctoral candidate at Fielding Graduate University and recipient of the Kristine Mann award for psychoanalytic research\, presents the results of a phenomenological investigation of Liberals and Conservatives in conversation. In-depth interviews with individuals who participated in depolarizing communication training revealed multi-dimensional aspects of tension and suffering experienced through dialogue with socio-politically different others. The study results give voice to lived first-person experiences of people who responded to the extreme U.S. political divide by engaging with interpersonal\, intrapersonal\, and transpersonal conflict. Research themes and images are presented in relation to alchemical symbols and Jungian interpretations of individuation processes.   An Invite to EHI’s Community from Presenter\, Carly Larson Solome \nHello Kirk and EHI-\nTwo years ago I received a grant from the Kristine Mann Psychoanalytic Library to study the experiences of people who attended Depolarizing workshops\, and participants came from both Braver Angels and EHI programs. The E-H approach is based on core ways of being and working with clients that help facilitate greater awareness\, greater sense of choice\, increased agency and adaptiveness and a deeper connection to self and others – all in the service of healing and growing. There are core capacities and skills an E-H therapist uses to help clients effectively explore and work through their existential predicaments so they can more fully access what deeply matters to them. \n \n \nIn this 15-hour online training\, leading instructors in the E-H field will provide theoretical explanation and experiential opportunities for the development and/or strengthening of skills and capacities that are not only core to the E-H approach but can also support therapists of many other modalities cultivate a foundation for optimizing their technical skills. \n \n \nTopics covered include: \n \n \n\nThe cultivation of presence as both the ground of therapy and one of its primary objectives\nThe focus on the “living moment” in working with the “here-and-now” experience of clients – staying with what presents itself phenomenologically rather than employing theoretical interventions\nThe differentiation between primary\, direct experience and secondary\, interpretive experience – and the emphasis on working with phenomenological experience\nThe meaning-making process and the formation of the Self-and-World Construct – helping client and therapist understand identity construction and de-construction\nHow to work with the client’s ways of being in the world and how to utilize the therapist-client relationship to help shift unhelpful ways of being\nHow to identify and work through clients’ inner battles in order to support their longings to emerge\, and feel more choice-ful and psychospiritually whole\nIntegrating and embodying your theoretical beliefs and authentic sense of self in your work as a therapist\n\n \n \nWho is This Training For?\n \n \nThis training is for licensed/pre-licensed therapeutic professionals and students currently enrolled in Master’s or Doctorate programs in related fields. \n \n \nStudents\, psychologists\, MFTs\, social workers\, counselors\, psychiatrists\, nurse practitioners\, and doctors are all encouraged to attend! \n \n \nThis training is ideal for those who have not yet had any intensive training in E-H therapy or for those who have and are seeking a refresher or reinforcement of what they’ve learned: this training works in and of itself but can also be a precursor to the longer residential training EHI holds or even a helpful follow-up to the residential training. \nSchedule and Fees\n \n \nDates: 2-1/2 Day Intensive Starts Friday\, May 14th – Sunday\, May 16th\, 2021 \n \n \nSchedule: Friday: 12 to 3pm PDT; Saturday the 15th & 16th: 8am to 3pm PDT (w/ 1-hour lunch break). \n \n \nOnline: This is a Live Workshop via Zoom Meeting w/ Zoom Breakout Rooms \n \n \n \nIn order to provide an intimate-enough experience (even on Zoom)\, the number of participants will be limited. \n \n \nFee Schedule: $659 Regular Licensed/Pre-Licensed Level or $609 Regular Elder/Student* Level  \n \n \n*Elder/Student Eligibility: Elder=65+ and Student=Currently enrolled in a therapeutic Master’s/PhD program. \n \n Continuing Education \n \n CE: 15 CEs approved. SUMMARY:Recommended E-H Event—Practising Existential Therapy: Ernesto Spinelli
DESCRIPTION:Practising Existential Therapy: An Introductory 3-Phase Overview workshop with Professor Ernesto Spinelli\nAbout this Event\nExistential therapy places pivotal significance upon the inter-relational aspects of human experience. From this perspective\, the presenting symptoms and disorders brought to therapy are disclosed as direct expressions and outcomes of the client’s overall ‘way of being’ rather than as isolated and disruptive impediments. How these responses impact upon\, maintain\, and disturb the client’s overall worldview is explored from a predominantly descriptively-attuned focus. \nAt the same time\, existential therapy places critical significance upon the actual ‘being with’ that emerges between therapist and client and argues that it is via the contrast and comparison of this lived experience that clients can find the means to reconsider and reconstruct their worldviews or life narratives. In general\, existential therapy challenges the emphasis typically placed on directed and directive change\, preconceived outcomes\, and professional detachment as set by the majority of contemporary psychotherapists. \nThe workshop is derived from Ernesto’s textbook Practising Existential Psychotherapy: The Relational World 2nd edition (Sage\, 2015). Its aim is to provide participants with the unique opportunity to develop their initial understanding of the practice of existential therapy as viewed from the perspective of 3 inter-related phases: \nPhase 1: The Existential Therapist as Idiot – Working with the client’s presenting worldview; \nPhase 2: The Existential Therapist as Fool – Working in ‘the between’; \nPhase 3: The Existential Therapist as Executioner – Endings: possibilities and disappointments. \nThis workshop will be hosted on the Zoom meeting platform where we will use our camera and microphones to interact with each other as a group. \nTo support practitioners in this time of extraordinary circumstances we are offering access to this group for a self-select fee. \nThe self-select fee is a radical inclusion policy to open learning for all colleagues. The guide price for this event is £20.00\, however\, we appreciate that income varies greatly in different locations and circumstances. Please contribute what you can to help us maintain inclusive professional training. \nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli\nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings\, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy\, psychology\, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. In 1999\, Ernesto was awarded a Personal Chair as Professor of psychotherapy\, counselling and counselling psychology. In 2000\, he was the Recipient of BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. And in 2019\, Ernesto received the BPS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Practice. His most recent book\, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World 2nd edition (Sage\, 2015) has been widely praised as a major contribution to the advancement of existential theory and practice. His previous books include: The Interpreted World: an introduction to phenomenological psychology\, 2nd ed (Sage\, 2005); Demystifying Therapy (PCCS\, 2006); Tales of Un-knowing (PCCS\, 2006); and The Mirror and The Hammer: challenging therapeutic orthodoxies (Sage\, 2001). Living up to the existential dictum that life is absurd\, Ernesto is also the author of an on-going series of Private Eye novels\, the first two of which are Scorpio’s Children (2019) and Cruel Love Ways (2020).

SUMMARY:Recommended—Hosted by RMHCPA: People of the Rainbow
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rocky Mountain Humanistic Counseling & Psychology Association \nPeople of the Rainbow: Working with and Understanding the LGBTQIA+ Community from a Humanistic Therapy Lens—Knowing the Essential Language \n\nFacilitated by Dan Johnson\, PsyD\, & Justin Walmsley\nMay 8th\, 2021\n8am – 11am PDT \n  \nThis workshop is designed to help clinicians working with LGBTQIA+ clients understand the current essential language and why it is important to use the appropriate language.  According to the Centers for Disease Control\, LGBTQIA+ people are members of every community\, diverse\, come from all walks of life\, and include people of all races and ethnicities\, all ages\, all socioeconomic status\, and come from all over the world. As the LGBTQIA+ community grows\, gains more prevalence\, and becomes more visible\, clinicians are seeing a natural increase in the number of clients who claim membership to this community\, as well as clients who present with LGBTQIA+ related issues and problems in session. \nThis workshop begins with exploring the importance of language as well as the language itself. It encompasses a wide range of everyday language practices utilized in and about LGBT communities as well as members within those communities. Language signifies a particular way of envisioning and verbalizing the world around us and this course takes a focused view both from the members of the community as well as outside the community. A meaningful understanding of LGBTQIA+ language\, terms\, background\, and context is a vital first step in providing respectful and inclusive mental healthcare. Becoming more adept and comfortable with this language will help clinicians be better equipped to provide LGBTQIA+ sensitive mental health services to a broader range of people. This course offers not only an understanding of definitions of language within the community but explores the concept of limiting language to define people as well as utilizing it as a tool by focusing on the etymology of key language\, and exploring ideas and concepts associated with the language commonly used both within and outside of the community. Using the appropriate language and using it correctly with clients can prevent unintentional harm and ruptures in the therapy relationship as well as helping develop trust and a good therapeutic alliance. \nContinuing Education Information  \nRMHCPA partners with Division 32 (Society for Humanistic Psychology to offer CE programs. \nAPA Division 32\, Society for Humanistic Psychology is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Describe two phases of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue. \n3. Apply two skills from the Experiential Democracy Dialogue to their clinical or counseling practices. \nExistential Meaning-Making: The Heart of Therapeutic Change\nOrah Krug\, PhD w/ Stephanie Weissman\, PsyDSaturday\, April 17th 3pm to 4:30pm with a Meet the Speaker 4:30pm to 5pm \nRecent research has identified “contextual factors”—and not specific techniques or treatments—as overwhelmingly responsible for effective therapy in general. Several prominent researchers have suggested that existential meaning-making may be foundational for transformational healing and change.  Existential theory challenges the notion of a world made up objects\, and subjects who perceive those objects. Instead\, it argues that subjects actually participate in constituting their realities by making meanings from their experiences in the real world. Dr. Krug will explain how consciousness\, personal freedom and responsibility take root in this reflective process\, often resulting in the creation of new meanings and new ways of being with self\, others\, and the world. \nAt the end of the presentation\, participants will be able to: \n\nDefine and describe existential meaning-making.\nExplain how and why it is foundational to therapeutic change.\nApply the lessons from experiential exercises to using the meaning-making process in their work as clinicians\n\n  \nAlly or Accomplice? The Human Cost of Racism\nTheopia Jackson\, PhDSunday\, April 18 11:30am-1pm with a Meet the Speaker from 1pm-1:30pm \nThe murder of George Floyd shined a light on the persistent complexities of racism in America\, serving as a catalyst for change. The wisdom of youth teaches that many of us are now Woke! and with increased awareness comes increased responsibility. There has been an uptick of attention to what it means to be an ally or accomplice. What is the distinction?  To what end? Dr. Jackson will interrogate the human cost of racism as it relates to the actualization of becoming an ally or accomplice and the implications for the practice of psychology. \nAt the end of the presentation\, participants will be able to: \n\nDiscuss the difference between being an ally or accomplice and the implications for practice.\nDescribe and critique the human cost associated with becoming an ally or accomplice.\nArticulate at least three (3) suggested paradigm shifts for the field of psychology

SUMMARY:Dancing With Dragons: Helping Clients Depolarize

Fee : $18.50. \n\nRegister Here\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n \nIn this workshop\, through didactic and experiential elements\, the presenters will explore the nature of the dragon dance as a call for healing\, and the development of polarized relational dynamics as a form of that dance that needs to be effectively addressed. Though\, obviously\, not all couples conflict is polarization\, dynamics of polarization often emerge in most comprehensive couples therapies\, so couples therapists need to understand polarization and how to help couples depolarize. Working effectively to defuse a polarized dynamic can open a territory of deeper vulnerability and sensitivity between partners\, and strengthen the collaborative dimension of relationship. \n Therapeutic Professionals Invited! \n Join us as Lou and Chris illustrate an approach to helping couples identify\, and work through their polarized dynamic. This workshop is intended to engage and enrich the work of therapeutic professionals who work in clinical settings. \n Overview \n This workshop is intended for clinicians who are interested in the dynamic\, challenging territory of couples therapy. Romantic relationships inherently hold the human dilemma that we cannot open to love without opening to where we have been wounded in love. We all have dragons. Their job is to protect the gold; in the most fundamental sense\, the continued existence of our essential self. Our dragons protect our wounded hearts. We might say dragons continue to breathe fire until the core wound they are protecting is recognized. In this way\, the dragon dance is a call for mutual healing. \n  \nSometimes this dance is one in which partners become polarized. Relational polarization is a specific type of conflict dynamic that frequently presents in couples therapy as an irreconcilable impasse: the endless argument that returns again and again but goes nowhere. Typically\, in this condition\, each partner is convinced they hold the correct view – and each partner’s dragon can become fiercer and more entrenched. In a polarized dynamic\, the emotional field between partners is dominated by a sense of life and death\, all or nothing\, no middle ground\, no room for compromise\, no one has my back – I am on my own. \nIn a polarized dynamic\, the gravitational pull from partners to take their side can be intense for the therapist. In the context of this pull\, it can be extremely helpful for the therapist to imagine that partners caught in this dynamic are representing opposing positions along a values continuum. Some common examples are: saving-spending\, work-play\, dependency-independence\, spontaneity-planning. In this way\, the task of the couples therapist is helping partners recognize that each of their positions holds value for the whole. \nIn this workshop\, the presenters will share an “origin story” of their struggle around the decision to have a child\, and will illustrate an approach to helping couples identify\, and work through their polarized dynamic. They will emphasize the need for couple partners to encounter and work collaboratively with each other’s core wounds in order to shift out of the dragon dance into one that is depolarized\, adaptive\, more secure and more gratifyingly intimate. \n Who is This Training For? \n This training is for licensed/pre-licensed therapeutic professionals as well as students currently enrolled in Master’s/Doctorate programs in related fields. \nStudents\, psychologists\, MFTs\, social workers\, counselors\, psychiatrists\, nurse practitioners\, and doctors are all encouraged to attend! \n Our Presenters \n Christine Armstrong\, LMFT EHI Affiliate Instructor \n Christine established her private practice in 1976. And yet it is the process of self-judgment and contraction that unintentionally contribute to unnecessary human suffering in the forms of loneliness\, existential emptiness and common alienation from self\, others and even our planetary home. \nPerhaps the greatest antidote and medicine to loneliness and alienation from self and others is the cultivation of deep experiences of self-compassion and awareness of common humanity. To authentically embody self-compassion is to awaken a direct knowing that our inner experiences\, no matter how uncomfortable\, scary\, embarrassing or “dark”\, relate to and reveal fundamental universal longings for love\, belonging and freedom. \nIn this workshop\, inspired by and based mainly on Process Experiential\, Phenomenology\, Humanistic-Existential and Mindfulness-based traditions\, participants will learn how to help clients move from polarized\, self-shaming and self-alienating states to states of self- and other-compassion. The benefits of these shifts include the emergence or deepening of authenticity\, vitality\, empathy\, generosity and intra-psychic integration. Tapping also into Gestalt\, Family Systems\, Emotion- Focused and mind-body inquiry practices we will explore the following themes: \n\nPrinciples of conscious healing\, including families of mindfulness practices\nNeo-Humanistic existential frameworks for understanding the ways we internalize a sense of the deficient self and contract against parts of the self\, including brief discussion of Internal Family Systems (IFS)\, Process-Experiential Emotion Focused and Buddhist psychological frameworks\nHow to identify and work with our own living processes of contraction and rejection of parts of self as a means to gain a deeper understanding of client processes\nHow to identify and work with living processes for making contact with our own deep basic goodness and capacity to accept and integrate self toward congruence and wholeness\nAwareness of collective resonance around basic vulnerability and basic existential longings that are at the heart of contracted and transforming self\n\n  \nOur Presenter: \nDr. Galia Schechter is a licensed clinical psychologist and Buddhist practitioner. She has extensive training and experience in multiple mind-body modalities. Along with having been in private practice for 11 years\, she has worked as a clinical director\, a clinical supervisor\, a clinical trainer and an organizational consultant. \nPrior to getting her doctorate in clinical psychology from the Wright Institute and becoming a licensed psychologist\, she received an MBA from Georgetown University and worked for organizations in the U.S. and abroad in governance\, human rights and international development. \n*CE Information for the Workshop\nAPA Division 32\, Society for Humanistic Psychology is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SUMMARY:An Interplay of Wisdom\, Emotion\, and Reason in Depolarizing the Mind
DESCRIPTION:Workshop on Utilizing Langerian Mindfulness in Working With Clients\nSaturday\, 11/14/2020\n10am-1pm Pacific Time; Check-in at 9:45am\nOnline workshop via Zoom & Zoom Breakout Rooms\n3 CEs \nWhile meditation-based mindfulness plays a significant role in espousing specific modes of mind that are prone to tranquility\, calmness\, and equanimity\, Langerian mindfulness develops a creative state of mind that is also flexibly tailored toward a peace-oriented mentality with potential features for a foundational change in one’s psychological being. \nMany mental health practitioners are aware of and utilize meditation-based mindfulness techniques in working with their clients. These techniques can help improve mental health and provide a number of health benefits in general. Fewer practitioners\, however\, are aware of and utilize a Langerian mindfulness approach when working with clients; and yet Langerian mindfulness can help increase psychological flexibility\, intentionality and well-being. \nIn this webinar\, Sayyed Mohsen Fatemi\, PhD\, will demonstrate and discuss Langerian mindfulness (developed almost 50 years ago by Dr. Ellen Langer)\, particularly as a way to increase empowerment through seeing and making conscious\, mindful choices. In increasing psychological flexibility and awareness of choice\, Langerian mindfulness can be an effective resource in depolarizing the polarized mind.  In fact\, research shows that an attitude of Langerian mindfulness\, with its positive impact on capacities for creativity and self-discovery\, cultivates and is associated with the depolarized mind; and that “mindlessness” – the state of narrowed awareness and responsiveness – correlates with the polarized mind. \nDr. Fatemi will also emphasize the roles of reason and emotion in the functioning of the mind and how mindlessness and mindfulness give rise to different modes of being with different implications for thoughts\, beliefs\, feelings\, emotions and behaviors. He will articulate ontological explanations of fear and anxiety\, detail how underlying fears and anxieties give rise to the polarized mind and highlight how increased capacity for conscious choice sits at the heart of existential approaches to increasing health and well-being. \nPsychotherapists are often dealing with the effects and influences of polarization on their clients\, whether in working with couples\, an individual locked in a rigid way of seeing things or with those suffering in the context of the deep division and antagonism that exists in our country today. Join us on November 14th as Dr. Fatemi provides training and education in how to find wisdom in the process of depolarizing the mind with the support of Langerian mindfulness. \n \n Registration

SUMMARY:What Disturbs Me Most About You...is Me
DESCRIPTION:Developed & Facilitated by: Nader Shabahangi\, PhD\, LMFT\, RCFE\nTime: 10am-1pm Pacific Time; Checkin 9:45am\n\nOnline workshop via Zoom utilizing Zoom Breakout Rooms\n\nHow do we learn to live in these times? How do we prioritize in our life during such a period of upheaval? Our world is undergoing so much change on a daily basis\, so many people on earth are suffering\, live in poverty\, are dying due to the effects of climate change\, of hunger\, of disease. Where do we turn for awareness so we can stop and think\, perhaps avert the calamity\, perhaps an extinction we are about to face? We need a different way of understanding ourselves. We need a different perception of how we can live together on this planet.\n\nTo find such a way\, we turn to those who have always been – at least until recently – the shepherds of human civilizations: our wise elders and thinkers. To stop the destructive path of polarization\, of us versus them\, we shift into a fundamentally different attitude to life and living. This attitude follows ancient wisdom that knows that everything is connected and united. This wisdom emphasizes that as we do to our outer nature\, we also do to our inner nature. It believes that if we do harm to what lives outside of us\, we also harm what lives inside of us.\n\nOld wisdom traditions\, and now also Quantum Theories\, point to the observer participating in the observed\, being the observed. What disturbs me about others who have a different perspective from me thus also points to something inside me – else I could not ‘see’ it. This fundamental shift in attitude looks at all that manifests as being part of a whole. We cannot discard certain parts of life thinking we do not desire them\, while we preference other parts as acceptable. We move beyond like and dislike\, we move beyond good and evil. With such a change in attitude\, we look differently at what disturbs\, irritates\, and angers us in others. Rather than thinking that the other is wrong\, we look at the other as teacher. As Carl Jung pointed out\, everything that irritates us can lead to a deeper self-understanding. The more we understand\, the more we become truly who we are. We are proposing that it is in accepting our disturbances and irritations\, we become whole. As whole beings\, we can create an opportunity to live in harmony with each other and with mother Earth.\n\nIn this webinar\, we will engage in concrete exercises that allow us to feel into the essence of the ‘other’s’ position and viewpoint. This will allow us to not only ’see’ the ‘other’ but also to deepen our own self-understanding. This way we can experience as much our unity as our differences. All is one; one is all. \n\n\nRegistration
