SUMMARY:EHNW: Lunch-n-Learn
DESCRIPTION:Metaphor | Beyond the Limits of Understanding\n\n\n\nPresented by Joaquin Lopez\, MS\, Professional Counselor Associate \n\n\n\nFriday\, October 21\, 2022\, from 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM \n\n\n\nVirtual by Zoom: (webinar details provided after registration) \n\n\n\nAll Tickets: $10.00 /EHNW Affiliates attend FREE \n\n\n\nWhy do metaphors hold so much power? How can we use metaphors in a clinical setting that is therapeutic and productive for both the counselor and the client? \n\n\n\nMetaphor is the language of transformation. Since time immemorial humans have expressed the awe and wonder of the universe through the use of metaphor. As a literary device\, the metaphor constructs meaning through comparisons by using one object in place of another. Thus\, going beyond the known form and meaning of an expressed object to evoke a message or explanation. The use of metaphor ushers in the opportunity to go beyond what we believe to be true. In the counseling office\, metaphors give permission to explore the unknown\, to see what cannot be seen\, and to get in touch with aspects of our experience in a unique way to forge new meaning. \n\n\n\nMetaphor | Beyond the Limits of Understanding will first examine metaphor through a poetic and literary lens identifying its parts and functions. After which will follow an investigation of the use of metaphor in a clinical setting from a theoretical perspective and its applications with clients. The discussion will also include a review of tools to explore metaphor through circumambulation and word association. \n\n\n\nPresenter Bio\n\n\n\nJoaquin is a Jungian-existential oriented counselor registered as a Professional Counselor Associate with the State of Oregon. He graduated from the Portland State University CACREP-accredited Master’s program in counseling. SUMMARY:EHNW 2022 Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Yaqui Andrés Martínez Robles w/ EHNWOctober 7-9\, 2022\n\n\n\nUnderstanding an Existential-Phenomenological Approach: From Worldview to Attitude and Methods\n\n\n\nFacilitated by Yaqui Andrés Martínez Robles\, PhD\n\n\n\n\n\nExistential-Humanistic Northwest presents – Workshop 2022 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFriday\, October 7\, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM \n\n\n\nSaturday\, October 8\, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM \n\n\n\nSunday\, October 9\, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM \n\n\n\nIn person at the Breathe Building in Portland\, Oregon with online live-streaming via Zoom. \n\n\n\nPlease join EHNW for their 2022 Annual Workshop! This year\, they excitedly offer a three-day long workshop\, facilitated by Dr. Yaqui Andres Martinez Robles\, PhD\, that combines both experiential and didactic learning approaches. This workshop will be offered in a hybrid format\, allowing registrants to attend either in-person or remotely via Zoom. Dr. Martinez Robles will present this workshop in English. (Due to low demand this workshop will not have translation. The presenters are sorry for any inconvenience). \n\n\n\nYaqui Andrés Martínez Robles is an Existential-phenomenological and Hermeneutical Analyst and Therapist and a Gestalt Therapist. He is the Secretary of the Latin-American Association of Existential Psychotherapy. He is the Founder and Chair of the Círculo de Estudios en Terapia Existencial\, in Mexico. He is the Representative of the Mexican School of Existential Therapy and Analysis and also a Member of the Editorial Board of Existential Analysis (Journal of the Society for Existential Analysis\, London). He has authored and co-authored several books and articles on Existential Therapy. (Journal of Psychology & Psychotherapy) \n\n\n\n11 CEUs Approved via NASW Oregon-Chapter\n\n\n\nPricingProfessional Ticket – $225 ($200 for AffiliatesStudent/Elder (over 65) – $100 ($85 for Affiliates)Economic Equalizing Ticket – $25 – $100(These tickets are meant for individuals who can not afford the workshop due to economic inequalities anywhere in the world. EHNW will honor whatever price level you choose.) \n\n\n\nFor body workers\, dancers\, or other somatically-oriented folks: EHNW is now offering an option to attend the Friday evening portion of this workshop as a stand-alone module. The cost of a “Friday-Only” ticket is $50. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE WORKSHOP:\n\n\n\nExistential-phenomenological approaches continue to attract more and more mental health professionals from diverse orientations to enliven their work with this experiential way of understanding the human experience of their clients. \n\n\n\nA wide-range of practitioners with different therapeutic orientations are exploring this approach as a way to reach their clients in a deeper way. At the same time\, its potential is sometimes not easily recognized\, and is even seen as a challenge to more “traditional” approaches. An existential-phenomenological approach is an invitation to more deeply understand the experience of another from an inter-relational stance that not only values\, but admires the mystery of persons as well as existence itself. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, participants will explore the main themes of this existential-phenomenological approach in a way that is accessible and in close contact to our subjective experience. At its root\, this approach invites us to begin the journey from our own subjective experience. \n\n\n\nParticipants will also deepen our understanding to the varying levels of contact involved in this approach and gain a better understanding of the worldview\, attitudes\, and methods that makes up this approach. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will be of help for mental health therapists of any orientation that wish to widen their scope of more deeply understanding another person. It will also be helpful for seasoned as well as newer therapists that are looking to deepen their comprehension and application of the existential-phenomenological approach. \n\n\n\nWORKSHOP SCHEDULE\n\n\n\nDay 1: Friday\, October 7th\, 2022 6pm-9pm \n\n\n\nInspired by Gabriel Roth’s five rhythms\, on day one we will explore existence as being made of encounters\, relations and dialogues with the world\, as well as with ourselves and others. \n\n\n\nThis will consist of a reflection with movement accompanied by meaningful music and the energy generated by the attendees. \n\n\n\nThis will be an experiential work where attendees are invited to bring comfortable clothing to dance or move around the room. Please note that there is no obligation to participate in any particular way\, in the spirit of this approach\, honor your subjective experience as it unfolds. \n\n\n\nThis evening session available as stand alone module. \n\n\n\nDay 2: Saturday\, October 8th\, 2022 9am-5pm \n\n\n\nThis day will mainly consist of lecture from Dr. Martinez-Robles where he will integrate various experiential exercises and reflections conducted in small groups. \n\n\n\nThis day will also include a live therapy demonstration where Dr. Martinez-Robles and a volunteer will carry out a full therapy session from this existential-phenomenological perspective. \n\n\n\nDay 3: Sunday\, October 9th\, 9am-12pm \n\n\n\nIn our final day of this workshop\, Dr. Martinez-Robles will conclude the lecture portion and we’ll also focus on questions from the attendees. Question themes can be related to the theoretical\, professional applications\, and/or related to the previous days’ demonstration. Through the Q&A\, we hope to further deepen different aspects of this vibrant approach to being with another person.

SUMMARY:3 Key Frames\, Attitudes\, and Skills of Existential-Humanistic Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by: Bob Edelstein\, LMFT\, Founder of EHNW and Former President \n\n\n\nThis presentation will define\, discuss\, and demonstrate these three key frames\, attitudes\, and skills of existential-humanistic psychotherapy. They are: \n\n\n\nBeing versus DoingBeing drives the therapy – not doing. Doing is secondary; it is the result of what emerges from being.Cultivation of the I-Thou RelationshipThe I-Thou relationship refers to the sacredness of the relationship\, experienced by both client and therapist\, that goes beyond any overt transaction.Deep Listening Deep listening is the ability to listen with a deeply attuned sensitivity to the clients’ experience.\n\n\n\nThese frames\, attitudes\, and skills can be applied to any modality to better enhance your support and engagement with your clients.

SUMMARY:EHNW July Salon on Internal Family System (IFS)
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Internal Family System concepts and interventions from an Existential-Humanistic perspective\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Via Zoom \n\n\n\nFacilitated by EHNW Affiliate\, Frank Canepa\, Professional Counselor Associate \n\n\n\nJoin EHNW for an informal discussion about Internal Family Systems and how this model relates to the E-H perspective. \n\n\n\nInternal Family Systems is a therapy model that conceptualizes all people as having an “inner family” made up of parts and the Self. These parts are considered full personalities\, not one dimensional characters\, that each have their own story and may need healing/unburdening. The “Self” is an inherent inner healer that does not get damaged in the same way as parts; it is resilient. We will discuss IFS concepts and interventions. \n\n\n\nMaterial to be discussed: \n\n\n\nWhat is Internal Family Systems? He works in Beaverton\, Oregon. In addition to being a therapist\, Frank is a musician\, father\, husband\, and lover of stories.

SUMMARY:Radical Authenticity Lunch-n-Learn Hosted by EHNW
DESCRIPTION:Radical Authenticity with Ken Bradford\, PhD\n\n\n\nThis talk clarifies the nature of Inauthenticity and distinguishes between Psychological Authenticity: daring to live one’s own life rather than someone else’s by sourcing oneself from one’s true desires\, aversions and indifferences; and Radical Authenticity: which observes that even when we acknowledge and live true to our personal loves and hates\, we remain bound to those inclinations-compulsions. (This is the Buddha’s 2nd Noble Truth.) Beyond self-centered authentic presence is naked\, spontaneous\, non-self-centered presence. \n\n\n\nKen Bradford\, PhD is an author\, teacher and contemplative yogin integrating Buddhist\, Dzogchen and Existential thought and practice. SUMMARY:Join Our Friend Ken Bradford for a Meditation Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:Effortless Presence: A Meditation-inquiry\n\n\n\nAn online meditation-dialogue Benefit attuning the mind to its innately free\, unfettered nature. \n\n\n\nThis contemplative hour or so is devoted to releasing mind-proliferating worries and despair into their unconditioned nature; in which nothing is lacking and whatever is happening – good\, bad or indifferent – is experienced as already being complete and perfect as it is. Within the lucidity of presence as such\, no effort to attain enhanced clarity\, compassion or delight in being is necessary or even desirable. What is necessary is to open ourself to the luminating nature of mind that is otherwise obscured by everyday mindfog. \n\n\n\nThis occasion will include an introduction\, guided practice and open dialogue. \n\n\n\nParticipation is by donation\, as you are so moved. Details on how to donate will be given with your registration confirmation and also during the meditation. \n\n\n\nAccess to the meditation is free with pre-registration. A Zoom link will be sent to the registrants. There will be no registration the day of the event. \n\n\n\nTo pre-register or for more info\, contact Ken directly at ken@bradfordphd.com. \n\n\n\nAs a BENEFIT EVENT ~ any monetary donations you make will flow to the Ukrainian humanitarian aid NGO\, Voices of Children (recommended by NPR)\, toward therapeutic and psychosocial services for displaced and traumatized Ukrainian children and families. \n\n\n\nFacilitator: Ken Bradford\, Phd \n\n\n\nDate: Sunday\, May 1\, 2022 \n\n\n\nTime: 10:00am – 11:30am\, Pacific Time via Zoom \n\n\n\nRegistration Fee: Free with Pre-Registration \n\n\n\nTo pre-register or for more info\, contact Ken directly at ken@bradfordphd.com here >> \n\n\n\nPlease Note: this event is not being hosted by EHI. SUMMARY:SHP's 15th Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Toward a Post-Human(e)istic Psychology: Deconstructing\, Preparing\, and Engaging\n\n\n\nJoin SHP colleagues\, students\, professionals\, and friends over a three-day virtual conference hosting a mixture of live and pre-recorded presentations\, a poster session\, and opportunities for socializing throughout the conference \n\n\n\nThis conference theme focuses on the future of humanistic psychology by acknowledging its past as we prepare to move toward a post human(e)istic psychology. This movement and action pivots on honorable deconstruction to build an alternative to supremacist ideologies in professional practice\, including research\, assessment\, therapeutic care\, scholarship\, and “super”-vision. As we rebuild\, we better position humanistic psychology (HP) to prepare for and respond to a post-humanistic world\, while addressing the existential crises of sustainability\, ecology\, global warming\, our movement away from speciesism and the rising of the post-human age of machines. With this\, we are tasked to engage ourselves as practitioners and public scholars in the world and on the edge of situated values (humanistic\, existential\, transpersonal\, spiritual) of our tradition. Calling upon Cornell West’s “organic intellectual\,” we are prepared to dive into interprofessional and interdisciplinary circles and events that this conference honors. \n\n\n\nPre-recorded presentations will be available on demand throughout the conference and for 3 months thereafter. SUMMARY:The Existential Unconscious and The Therapeutic Relationship
DESCRIPTION:New EHI webinar on Otto Rank’s Influence in E-H Psychology and Psychotherapy \n\n\n\nApproved for 3 CEs!* \n\n\n\nThe Existential Unconscious and The Therapeutic Relationship: Otto Rank and the Birth of Existential-Humanistic Psychotherapy\n\n\n\nDeveloped and Facilitated by Otto Rank Scholar: Robert Kramer\, PhD \n\n\n\nWebinar Hosted by: Existential-Humanistic Institute \n\n\n\nDate/Time: Saturday\, March 19th\, 10am-1pm PST; CE Zoom Check-in 9:45 am \n\n\n\nRegistration: General/Professional-$35; Student/Elder- $20; Economic Hardship/Equity-$10 \n\n\n\nCEs*: 3 CEs approved for live presentation; $18.50 CE fee. Please connect with us for CE course info or for disability accommodation. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin us for this online webinar about Otto Rank’s influence on Carl Rogers\, Rollo May and the development of Existential-Humanistic Psychotherapy\, presented by Dr. Robert Kramer! \n\n\n\nThis workshop is an introduction to the central and influential role Otto Rank’s perspectives on psychology and psychotherapy have played in the development of the existential and humanistic movements within the disciplines of psychology and psychotherapy. Though many students and professionals within these fields are likely to associate Rank with Sigmund Freud and psychodynamic theories and approaches – and though many know about the key role people like Rollo May\, Ernest Becker\, Carl Rogers\, James Bugental\, Irv Yalom and Abraham Maslow have played in the development of existential and humanistic approaches – fewer are aware of the Rankian concepts that sit at the foundations of existential and humanistic psychology. In a word\, Rank discovered the “existential unconscious”—an unconscious far more anxiety-provoking and liberating than either the Freudian unconscious or the Jungian unconscious. Both the Freudian personal unconscious and the Jungian collective unconscious can be known. The existential (or Rankian) unconscious can never be known. It is a mystery wrapped in an enigma shrouded in darkness. \n\n\n\nThe workshop presenter\, Dr. Robert Kramer\, will outline Rank’s role in the evolution from first-wave\, psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy to the third wave of existential-humanistic psychotherapy\, and in particular focus on Rank’s influence on Carl Rogers and Rollo May. \n\n\n\nWorkshop participants will learn about Rank’s emphasis on the therapeutic relationship as the primary agent for change\, how that emphasis influenced Roger’s client-centered approach\, and\, in fact\, helped eventually move psychotherapy away from perspectives that were based on seeing the therapist as the agent of change whose goal was to “fix” the patient. Unlike Freud\, Rank also believed there was a necessity for metaphysical problems to be addressed in therapy – a position that inspired Rollo May and laid groundwork for the exploration of existential givens and cosmological forces in psychotherapy. \n\n\n\nDr. Kramer will also highlight Rank’s focuses on the relevance of existential anxiety as opposed to drive anxiety\, and working with “patients” in the here-and-now in therapy\, rather than on mining their past. This orientation toward being with and examining the living\, present moment and all its possibilities and limitations is core to the existential-humanistic psychotherapeutic approach. This workshop will highlight how Rankian concepts form an existential-humanistic framework for clinical practice. \n\n\n\nCE Learning Objectives: \n\n\n\nParticipants will be able to: Describe at least one (1) way in which Otto Rank saw the therapeutic relationship as the agent for changeList at least two (2) Rankian concepts that inform contemporary existential-humanistic psychotherapeutic practiceIdentify the contours of the “existential unconscious” as it emerges\, through a glass darkly\, in psychotherapy\n\n\n\nPreparing for the Workshop: Recommended Readings & an Exercise(This info will be also be included in your Registration Confirmation Email)\n\n\n\nPre-Workshop ExerciseRobert would like to have the attendees read this article\, When We Die\, and write 2 – 3 sentences of what comes to them in reading it. To me\, the perspective embraces all of what it means to exist and values each unique\, individual journey. I value that we always have a choice to change our attitude and behavior\, even in the most limited of conditions or circumstances. I take on the powerful responsibility that our choice matters in that we impact the world by our feelings\, thoughts and actions. This perspective also embraces that as human beings we are always moving towards health and wholeness\, both individually and collectively. BiographyDave is a licensed psychologist\, providing compassionate and patient-centered therapy in a primary care setting. He completed a doctorate in clinical psychology and a post-doctoral fellowship in health psychology in the integrated primary care model. He currently works for Premise Health Care\, at Intel Health for Life Centers and sees clients that are Intel employees or their dependents. He engages in brief interventions\, diagnostic evaluations\, and ongoing psychotherapy for individuals\, couples\, and adolescents. Dave has experience with multi-cultural patients and can provide therapy in Spanish if needed\, as he has lived and traveled throughout Latin America. Dave has also taught a variety of psychology courses at several colleges and universities\, including coursework in clinical\, abnormal\, group\, adolescent and basic psychology. Dave received a year of specialized training and conducted academic research in psychotherapy with persons living with HIV. As a member of the American Psychological Association and board member of Existential-Humanistic Northwest\, he brings and makes space for a broad range of perspectives to each client encounter. Please refer questions to Ryan Brown via the EHNW Contact Form.

SUMMARY:Recommended: Kirk Schneider's EDD at MIP
DESCRIPTION:The Experiential Democracy Dialogue: Using Depth Psychology to Address Cultural and Political Divides\n\n\n\nInstructor: Kirk J. Schneider\, Ph.D Host: Manhattan Institute of Psychoanalysis\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCourse Description and Overview:This workshop will provide skills for therapists who are challenged by the cultural and political stances of their clients and how those stances manifest and potentially affect the therapeutic relationship. Dr. Schneider will introduce the concept of the “polarized mind” (the fixation on a single point of view to the utter exclusion of competing points of view)\, which he developed based on extensive existential-depth and social-psychological research on the roots of human destructiveness. Emerging from concern about the destructive effects of intra-psychic and societal polarization\, along with a resultant deep interest in helping individuals and communities depolarize\, Dr. Schneider spent over fifteen years developing a one-on-one depolarization dialogue format called “Experiential Democracy Dialogue” (detailed in his book The Depolarizing of America: A Guidebook for Social Healing). This approach is a hybrid of his experience as a leading figure in the existential-humanistic psychological and psychotherapeutic movements with his experience as a trained moderator for the nation-wide organization called “Braver Angels.” Braver Angels is a grass-roots citizens’ movement that uses a highly structured group (and individual) format to bring self-identified liberals and conservatives together for “living room” style dialogues. \n\n\n\nExperiential Democracy Dialogue\, as a one-on-one conflict mediation format\, provides a unique resource for clinicians struggling with the ways that socio-cultural and political differences show up in the therapeutic encounter. Techniques and principles from this approach can be utilized by therapists to more adaptively work with the aforementioned challenges as they arise in therapy by helping them develop skills to be more present to clients from highly contrasting backgrounds\, develop greater capacities to empathize with and find common ground with such clients\, and develop greater capacities to experience curiosity and enhance exploration with such clients who formerly elicited anguish or even revulsion. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, Dr. Schneider will outline five phases of Experiential Democracy Dialogue – Guided Visualization\, Providing Background\, Taking a Stance\, Identifying Stereotypes and Results/Discovery – and then demonstrate how to employ Experiential Democracy Dialogue in the therapeutic relationship. Participants will then be placed into dyads to role-play therapist-client\, with the “therapist” leading the pair through the five phases. Participants will then be able to reflect on and begin to integrate how utilizing Experiential Democracy Dialogue techniques and core concepts can help strengthen their therapeutic relationships with clients who hold strong cultural and political differences from them. \n\n\n\nDate/Time: Feb. 12\, 1pm-4pm EST; 10am-1pm PST \n\n\n\nLocation: Zoom \n\n\n\nCost: $90 and candidates $60 (Proof of Institute affiliation required.)  CE: 3 \n\n\n\nManhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis is recognized by the New York State Education Department as an approved provider of continuing education for LCSW\, LMSW\, LCAT\, LMHC and Licensed Psychologists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKirk J. Dr. Schneider is a cofounder and current president of the Existential-Humanistic Institute (an award-winning psychotherapy training center)\, Council Member and Candidate for President of the American Psychological Association (APA)\, past president (2015-2016) of the Society for Humanistic Psychology (Division 32) of the APA\, recent past editor of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology (2005-2012)\, a trained moderator for the conflict mediation group Braver Angels\, and an adjunct faculty member at Saybrook University and Teachers College\, Columbia University. DESCRIPTION:Buddhism and Existential-Humanistic Therapy: The Importance of Interconnection\n\n\n\n Presented by Chuck Craytor\, LPC Friday\, February 11th\, 2022 1:00pm – 2:30pm Pacific Time Zoom Webinar (logon instructions sent with registration confirmation) Free to all EHNW Affiliates$10 for Non-Affiliates  \n\n\n\nDescriptionWe live in a world of rapid change and an increasing sense of uncertainty. There is a deepening sense of isolation\, resulting in more and more people retreating into their small tribe and lesser self. In my talk\, we will explore the Buddhist teaching of Dependent Origination and its relationship with the Existential-Humanistic perspective. This talk will include research I conducted in graduate school while working in Moldova and how the EH perspective influences my work\, even before I knew what EH was.  BiographyFor over twenty-five years\, Chuck has worked in personal coaching\, workshop facilitation\, and leadership development. He has worked with private\, non-profit\, and governmental organizations. Chuck completed graduate school in clinical mental health counseling in 2012 and has been in private practice since then. His practice of Buddhism began while living in Japan from 1975-77\, and he has been practicing since then. Chuck has been pulled forward throughout his journey by committing to transforming adversity into opportunities to develop resiliency\, peace\, and harmonious connections with our natural environment and others. This commitment has provided the opportunity to work with people locally\, nationally\, and internationally as far away as Moldova. Please refer questions to Dave Fischer through the EHNW Contact Form.

DESCRIPTION:Depolarizing Therapeutic Presence: Utilizing Concepts of the “Experiential Democracy Dialogue” to Help Therapists Reduce Polarization With Clients\n\n\n\nDeveloped and Facilitated by EHI Core Instructor: Kirk Schneider\, PhD\, EHI President \n\n\n\nDate: Saturday\, January 22\, 2021 \n\n\n\nTime: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm Pacific Time Zone /Sign in to waiting room at 9:45am  \n\n\n\nOnline: via Zoom and Zoom Breakout Rooms  \n\n\n\n3 CE hours available(live presentation participation)*. Fee: $18.50. Please contact us for more info regarding the course. \n\n\n\nRegistration Fee: Cost: $35 General/Professional; $20 Student/Elder: $10 Economic Hardship/Equity;No one will be turned away due to lack of funds—please reach out to Michelle via contact form at the bottom of page for assistance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Page\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the final webinar in our Depolarization Series. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will provide skills for therapists who are challenged by the cultural and political stances of their clients and want to more effectively work through their own charged internal reactions that could adversely affect the therapeutic relationship. \n\n\n\nDr. Schneider will introduce the concept of the “polarized mind” (the fixation on a single point of view to the utter exclusion of competing points of view)\, which he developed based on extensive existential-depth and social-psychological research on the roots of human destructiveness. Emerging from concern about the destructive effects of intra-psychic and societal polarization\, along with a deep interest in helping individuals and communities depolarize\, Dr. Schneider spent over fifteen years developing a one-on-one depolarization dialogue format called the “Experiential Democracy Dialogue” (detailed in his book\, The Depolarizing of America: A Guidebook for Social Healing). \n\n\n\nAs a conflict mediation approach that is informed by components of existential-humanistic psychotherapy\, the Experiential Democracy Dialogue is a unique resource for clinicians struggling with the ways that socio-cultural and political differences affect them in the therapeutic encounter. These struggles might even be more intense today than previously\, given the context of intense socio-political polarization\, potentially making it even harder for therapists to sit with difference with their clients. Though the actual format of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue is not in and of itself suitable to be used between therapist and client\, techniques and concepts from this approach can be utilized by therapists to more adaptively work with their own challenging and charged feelings as they arise in therapy\, mainly by helping them develop skills to be more present to clients from highly contrasting backgrounds\, develop greater capacities to empathize with and find common ground with such clients\, and develop greater capacities to experience curiosity and enhance exploration with such clients who formerly elicited anguish or even revulsion. The concept and practice of “presence” plays a central role in this process and will be emphasized by Dr. Schneider. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, Dr. Schneider will outline five phases of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue – Guided Visualization\, Providing Background\, Taking a Stance\, Identifying Stereotypes and Results/Discovery – and then demonstrate how going through these phases can help therapists feel a greater openness toward and gain a greater understanding of their clients. Participants will then be placed into dyads to go through this process together. Participants will then be able to reflect on and begin to integrate how utilizing Experiential Democracy Dialogue techniques and core concepts can help strengthen their therapeutic relationships with clients who hold strong cultural and political differences from them. \n\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\n\n\nParticipants will be able to: \n\n\n\nDefine the use of “presence” in the Experiential Democracy DialogueIdentify two (2) concepts of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue that they can use to depolarize in relationship to clients’ beliefsList two (2) ways that utilizing the Experiential Democracy Dialogue techniques can strengthen the therapeutic relationship\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Today!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Continuing Education Info\n\n\n\n3 CEs Approved. SUMMARY:Recommended: Lunch and Learn w/ EHNW
DESCRIPTION:Join Our Friends at EHNW in Portland for a Lunch and Learn! \nHumanistic Psychotherapy and the Art of Living\nFacilitator: Carol Swanson\, LCSW \nDate: Friday\, December 10\, 2021 \nTime: 1pm-2:30pm\, Pacific; Online by Zoom \nRegistration Fees: Free for EHNW Affiliate $10-Non-Affiliate \nPresentation Host: Existential Humanistic NorthWest (EHNW in Portland) \nWe live in a world of fragile things: fragile selves\, fragile psyches\, fragile bodies. Yet even with this uncertainty and fragility\, we are asked to approach our lives with tenacity\, grace and wisdom. As existential humanistic therapists we encounter the uncertainty and complexity in our clinical work everyday. We are asked to suffer alongside our clients\, and to help them increase their capacities for living\, and hopefully for a more creative life. An important capacity we need as therapists and we can lend to our clients is knowing that life’s unpredictability exceeds our capacity to control it\, that a degree of insecurity is an existential predicament and not a neurotic issue. In this presentation\, and conversation I want to put forward how we may never be successful in cultivating a unitary and internally consistent self. I pose the question: How do we develop the acceptance and tolerance for a degree of instability in our lives? \nBio: Carol Swanson has been in private practice in Portland\, OR for forty years. She co-founded the Portland Gestalt Therapy Training Institute and has trained therapists in the US\, Europe and Australia. Her current interest is studying philosophical resources for clinical work.\nShe has authored several articles published for Gestalt journals. When not in the Zoom room you can find her in the garden\, cycling\, hiking\, paddling her kayak or paddle board or camping.Existential-Humanistic Institute Northwest (EHNW). \nRegister With EHNW Here>> \nPlease Note: this event is not being hosted by EHI. DESCRIPTION:Join Our Friends at EHNW in Portland for a Fall Student Salon! \nStudent Salon: I don’t know is the only thing I can know: Tolerating ambiguity and holding our theories lightly in therapy.\nHow do you know what you know? How certain are you of your knowledge\, your approach\, your treatment plan? If these questions unsettle\, hooray! Therapy unsettles us. Experienced and wise therapists are fallibilists\, recognizing that our understanding of anything or anyone is only a perspective within a horizon limited by our own experience. HOLD YOUR THEORY LIGHTLY. \nThis perspective keeps us flexible and open to multiple\, emerging and expanding horizons of meaning. This also means we live and work with uncertainty and NOT KNOWING in our clinical work. This salon will focus on how our clinical skepticism can increase our humanism in our work.\nFacilitators: Carol Swanson will be co-facilitating the conversation with Bob Edelstein. \nDate: Saturday\, November 6\, 2021 \nTime: 10am-12pm\, Pacific; Online by Zoom \nRegistration Fees: Free for EHNW Affiliate) $20-Professional & $15-Student \nPresentation Host: Existential Humanistic NorthWest (EHNW in Portland) \nRegister With EHNW Here>> \nPlease Note: this event is not being hosted by EHI. SUMMARY:Working with Nonverbal Communication to Navigate Conflict
DESCRIPTION:This Workshop is Canceled\nAugust 19th Update: Due to unforeseen circumstances this workshop has been canceled. We are looking forward to rescheduling this workshop in the future. When it gets rescheduled we will notify those who registered and our mailing list. Registrants will be refunded the fees paid. \nHosted by: Existential-Humanistic Institute \nDate/Time: To Be Announced \n3 CEs for live workshop attendance(pending approval)*. Fee: $18.50. For more information on CE offerings\, or to request disability accommodations\, please contact us at program@ehinstitute.org. \nCost: $35* General/Professional; $20 Student/Elder: $10 Economic Hardship \nJoin Our Mailing List to Get News About Upcoming Events\nSome of the best writers note that words\, according to Virginia Woolf\, often “miss the mark.” They can create misunderstandings\, inflame emotions\, and polarize groups of people. Maxine Sheets-Johnstone\, a phenomenologist and dancer\, advises us to go back to the “things themselves”: through detailed observation of the first language of all humans and sentient beings—movement—we can more accurately “read” other people and the world around us. \nIn this workshop\, we will look at nonverbal language as one that is authentic (“the body does not lie”). Observing the nonverbal gives shades and layers of meaning that are often obscured in solely verbal communication. In this workshop\, we will learn a simplified form of Labanotation- a movement notation system that uses existential dimensions of time\, weight\, space and flow to track the ongoing process of movement. It can also be used to track interpersonal movement as dialogue\, and even tune into the rhythms of speech. \nLearning to work with our clients with particular attention paid to their nonverbal language can help them develop a more authentic\, integrated experience of self and connect with others in more gratifying ways. Comprehending the existential dimensions of nonverbal communication can reveal whole new layers of meaning and contribute to deeper understanding and increased harmony in a troubled and conflicted world. \n \nOur Presenter:\nIlene Serlin\, PhD\, BC-DMTEHI Affiliate Instructor\nIlene Serlin is a licensed psychologist and registered dance/movement therapist in practice in San Francisco and Marin county. She is the past president of the San Francisco Psychological Association\, a Fellow of the American Psychological Association\, past-president of the Division of Humanistic Psychology. Ilene has taught at Saybrook University\, Lesley University\, UCLA\, the NY Gestalt Institute and the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich. She is the editor of Whole Person Healthcare (2007\, 3 vol.\, Praeger)\, over 100 chapters and articles on body\, art and psychotherapy\, and is on the editorial boards of PsycCritiques\, The American Journal of Dance Therapy\, The Journal of Humanistic Psychology\, Arts & Health: An International Journal of Research\, Policy and Practice\, Journal of Applied Arts and Health\, and The Humanistic Psychologist. Ilene studied Labanotation for 3 years at the Laban/Bartenieff Institute in NY with Irmgard Bartenieff\, student of Rudolf von Laban. Her research interests include existential and humanistic psychotherapy\, Buddhist and Jewish spiritual practices\, dance movement therapy and women’s issues. \nContinuing Education\n3 CEs Pending . Fee: $18.50 \n \nAPA Division 32\, Society for Humanistic Psychology is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SUMMARY:Recommended— RMHCPA Workshop: Critical Race Theory and Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Critical Race Theory and Psychotherapy Workshop\nDate:    August 21\, 2021 \nTime: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM MST (8:00-11:00 AM EST; 10:00 AM-1:00 PM CST; 11:00 AM-2:00 PM EST) \nCost:    $35 for professionals (CEs included); $25 for students (no CEs) \nPresenters: Lisa Xochitl Vallejos\, Nathaniel Granger\, Jr.\, & Louis Hoffman \nHost: Rocky Mountain Humanistic Counseling and Psychology Association \nContinuing Education: 3 CEs (pending approval) \nRegistration: https://rmhcpa.org/product/critical-race-theory-and-psychotherapy-workshop/ \nOverview \nCritical Race Theory (CRT) began in the legal field but over time has been applied in many different disciplines\, including psychology. Delgado and Stefancic (2017) briefly define the CRT movement as “a collection of activists engaged in studying and transforming the relationship among race\, racism\, and power” (p. 3). Furthermore\, they note that CRT is not a unified movement and includes many variations and differing perspectives. CRT is unified by shared questions and concerns more than specific beliefs or dogma. However\, CRT theories are consistently concerned about the problem of race\, racism\, and power and how this impacts individuals\, institutions\, and society. Furthermore\, CRT purports that to understand racial disparities and other racial issues in the United States and around the world it is necessary to consider institutional racism\, systemic racism\, and issues of power. \nRecently\, CRT has come under increased scrutiny and criticism\, including arguments that CRT should be banned from being taught in schools\, universities\, and/or other settings. Many of these criticisms misrepresent CRT\, such as purporting that CRT maintains that some people are inherently inferior or racist. \nIn the first part of this workshop\, the presenters provide an overview of the primary themes of CRT. Next\, they consider criticism of CRT\, both popular and academic\, and provide some responses to these criticisms. In responding to the criticisms\, the presenters consider which are based upon false assumptions about CRT and which reflect valid criticisms. After considering the foundations and critiques of CRT\, the presenters address how CRT can be applied in clinical and training settings. \nCEs are included in the Professional Registration; there are no CEs included with the student discount. \nProfessional: 35.00 | Student: 25.00 \n  \nPlease Note: This workshop is being held by RMHCPA \, this is not an EHI event. Please contact RMHCPA through their website/registration page if you have questions regarding this offering.

SUMMARY:Radical Authenticity: Liberating the Everyday Divided Mind
DESCRIPTION:Online Workshop w/ Ken Bradford\, PhD\nHosted by: Existential-Humanistic Institute \nDate/Time: Saturday\, July 10th 10am-1pm Pacific \nCE: Approved for 3 CE Hrs.  \nOverview & Description\nOverview and Description: The polarized mind that plays havoc politically and relationally is an extension of the everyday divided mind\, or divided self\, which gives rise to all manner of anxiety\, despair and confusion. All human conflict – outer as well as inner – arises from a singular root. Cut that root and its branches of physical tightness and psychic confusion\, leaves of relational discord and personal discontent\, and bitter fruit of feeling anxious\, depressed and irritable – perpetually wanting – dissolve. \nRadical Existential and Buddhist psychology recognize there is a basic – quite normal and innocent – split in human consciousness that divides perceived objects and others “out there” from a perceiving subject “in here.” This underlying bi-polar disorder of everyday consciousness is the object-subject split that dominates our mind by confusing projections for reality as it is. Pitting self against world\, us against them\, conscious reason against unconscious compulsion\, everyday mind oscillates between moments of self-infatuation and self-hatred. Everyday dualistic vision reifies the flux of experience to the extent we identify “me” as a being separate from being as such. The compulsive striving to defend and promote our self as a self-grounded entity severs us from the ground and innate well-being of undivided\, authentic presence. \nWhether or not political\, relational\, psychological or physical problems are solved\, it is possible to befriend impermanence – the flux of experience forever unresolved – in a way that is supple\, attuned\, creative and carefree. But only insofar as we are able to drop our ego-shields and dare genuine openness and radical freedom\, undivided in mind and untethered to our projections. \nOur Presenter\n \nKen Bradford\, PhD is a teacher\, author and contemplative yogin integrating Buddhist\, Dzogchen and Existential thought and practice. Formerly\, he maintained a psychotherapy practice in the San Francisco Bay area and was Adjunct Professor at John F. Kennedy University and California Institute of Integral Studies. Publications include numerous peer-reviewed journal articles\, most recently on “Radical Authenticity” and “Existential-Contemplative Therapy”; and books\, The I of the Other: Mindfulness-Based Diagnosis & the Question of Sanity; and Listening from the Heart of Silence: Nondual Wisdom and Psychotherapy\, Vol. 2 (with John Prendergast). \n  \n \n Register Today\n \nContinuing Education Info\n3 CEs Approved. SUMMARY:Recommended: Kristine Mann Library - Psychoanalytic Research Award Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Encounters with the Liberal or Conservative Other: A Jungian Phenomenological Analysis of Individuation through Conflict\nOpen to the Interested Public!\nDescriptionCarly Larson Solome\, clinical psychology doctoral candidate at Fielding Graduate University and recipient of the Kristine Mann award for psychoanalytic research\, presents the results of a phenomenological investigation of Liberals and Conservatives in conversation. In-depth interviews with individuals who participated in depolarizing communication training revealed multi-dimensional aspects of tension and suffering experienced through dialogue with socio-politically different others. The study results give voice to lived first-person experiences of people who responded to the extreme U.S. political divide by engaging with interpersonal\, intrapersonal\, and transpersonal conflict. Research themes and images are presented in relation to alchemical symbols and Jungian interpretations of individuation processes.   An Invite to EHI’s Community from Presenter\, Carly Larson Solome \nHello Kirk and EHI-\nTwo years ago I received a grant from the Kristine Mann Psychoanalytic Library to study the experiences of people who attended Depolarizing workshops\, and participants came from both Braver Angels and EHI programs. I will be presenting the research on May 15th (via Zoom) 1:00PM EST. It is a three hour presentation\, and the last part will be a brief experiential exercise similar to what the research participants experienced. \nCarly Larson Solome\n\nWatch the Presentation via Zoom\nKristine Mann Library – Psychoanalytic Research Award Presentation \nMay 15\, 2021 \n10am-1pm Pacific Time /1:00pm – 4:00pm Eastern Time (US and Canada) \n Zoom Meeting Link\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87596552488?pwd=VUkwL3dyM1IvN2xJL2NPelVreUZCdz09 \nMeeting ID: 875 9655 2488 \nPasscode: 093979

The E-H approach is based on core ways of being and working with clients that help facilitate greater awareness\, greater sense of choice\, increased agency and adaptiveness and a deeper connection to self and others – all in the service of healing and growing. There are core capacities and skills an E-H therapist uses to help clients effectively explore and work through their existential predicaments so they can more fully access what deeply matters to them. \n \n \nIn this 15-hour online training\, leading instructors in the E-H field will provide theoretical explanation and experiential opportunities for the development and/or strengthening of skills and capacities that are not only core to the E-H approach but can also support therapists of many other modalities cultivate a foundation for optimizing their technical skills. \n \n \nTopics covered include: \n \n \n\nThe cultivation of presence as both the ground of therapy and one of its primary objectives\nThe focus on the “living moment” in working with the “here-and-now” experience of clients – staying with what presents itself phenomenologically rather than employing theoretical interventions\nThe differentiation between primary\, direct experience and secondary\, interpretive experience – and the emphasis on working with phenomenological experience\nThe meaning-making process and the formation of the Self-and-World Construct – helping client and therapist understand identity construction and de-construction\nHow to work with the client’s ways of being in the world and how to utilize the therapist-client relationship to help shift unhelpful ways of being\nHow to identify and work through clients’ inner battles in order to support their longings to emerge\, and feel more choice-ful and psychospiritually whole\nIntegrating and embodying your theoretical beliefs and authentic sense of self in your work as a therapist\n\n \n \nWho is This Training For?\n \n \nThis training is for licensed/pre-licensed therapeutic professionals and students currently enrolled in Master’s or Doctorate programs in related fields. \n \n \nStudents\, psychologists\, MFTs\, social workers\, counselors\, psychiatrists\, nurse practitioners\, and doctors are all encouraged to attend! \n \n \nThis training is ideal for those who have not yet had any intensive training in E-H therapy or for those who have and are seeking a refresher or reinforcement of what they’ve learned: this training works in and of itself but can also be a precursor to the longer residential training EHI holds or even a helpful follow-up to the residential training. \nSchedule and Fees\n \n \nDates: 2-1/2 Day Intensive Starts Friday\, May 14th – Sunday\, May 16th\, 2021 \n \n \nSchedule: Friday: 12 to 3pm PDT; Saturday the 15th & 16th: 8am to 3pm PDT (w/ 1-hour lunch break). \n \n \nOnline: This is a Live Workshop via Zoom Meeting w/ Zoom Breakout Rooms \n \n \n \nIn order to provide an intimate-enough experience (even on Zoom)\, the number of participants will be limited. \n \n \nFee Schedule: $659 Regular Licensed/Pre-Licensed Level or $609 Regular Elder/Student* Level  \n \n \n*Elder/Student Eligibility: Elder=65+ and Student=Currently enrolled in a therapeutic Master’s/PhD program. \n \n Continuing Education \n \n CE: 15 CEs approved.
