SUMMARY:EHNW's "Case Conceptualization\, Consultation\, and Discussion from an Existential-Humanistic Perspective"
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Event:  EHNW will send Zoom login after registration \n\n\n\nEHNW invites you to join them in an open conversation. At this salon\, participants will review some therapy cases\, including the client’s presenting issues and potential therapeutic responses\, from within an Existential-Humanistic framework. The discussion will be facilitated by EHNW board member Bob Edelstein. Please feel free to bring a current case for which you would like some consultation\, or listen to others\, ask questions\, and contribute your comments. Due to time considerations\, not every case will likely be discussed. \n\n\n\nEHNW’s intention in hosting these salons is to create a space for practitioners and members of the EH community to gather\, socialize\, and explore meaningful topics. The conversation will be salon-style where participants share what is present for them as the conversation emerges. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nBob Edelstein\, LMFT\, MFT\, is an Existential-Humanistic psychotherapist with over fifty years of experience. He provides consultation\, supervision\, workshops\, and trainings for clinicians and students. He is a blogger for Psychology Today and has published articles on the existential-humanistic perspective\, including a chapter entitled “Frames\, Attitudes\, and Skills of an Existential Humanistic Psychotherapist” in the Handbook of Humanistic Psychology (2nd Edition). He has presented multiple workshops and podcasts on Existential-Humanistic Psychotherapy\, including presenting at the 2nd and 3rd Existential Psychotherapy World Congress and the Global Existential Summit. Bob is the founder and past president of the Existential-Humanistic Northwest professional organization. \n\n\n\nPlease contact EHNW about their event here via their contact form.

SUMMARY:Update: EHNW's "Supervision: An Existential Therapy Perspective" Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Postponed as of February 15\, 2024: This event has been canceled on March 9th due to unforeseen circumstances. Please check back with EHNW in Portland for updates as this workshop is intended to be rescheduled. New date still to be announced. \n\n\n\nFacilitated by: Professor Ernesto Spinelli \n\n\n\nVirtual Event:  EHNW will send Zoom login after registration \n\n\n\nThe supervision of therapists by their colleagues has become one of the primary requirements for continuing professional practice. Just about every Professional Body concerned with therapy emphasizes the importance of supervision and\, typically\, specifies that its members must engage in it under regular and ongoing approved conditions. Although existential therapy is no different in that its members adhere to these governances\, the very concept of supervision\, and in particular what its meaning and purpose might be understood to be\, has remained an ongoing source of debate. \n\n\n\nIn many ways\, the issues surrounding supervision have provided existential therapists with a focus through which to address the wider debate as to what constitutes and defines existential therapy and what may be distinctive about its practice. \n\n\n\nThis workshop explores what is distinctive about an existential approach to supervision. In attempting to do so\, it will address several key aspects in the practice of existential therapy that can be transposed to supervision from an existential therapy perspective. As well as lecture and discussion\, participants will have opportunity to take part in a live demonstration of this approach to supervision. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis (SEA) between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings\, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy\, psychology\, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. In 1999\, Ernesto was awarded a Personal Chair as Professor of psychotherapy\, counselling and counselling psychology. In 2000\, he was the Recipient of BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. And in 2019\, Ernesto received the BPS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Practice. His most recent book\, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World\, 2nd edition (Sage\, 2015) has been widely praised as a major contribution to the advancement of existential theory and practice. His previous books include: The Interpreted World: an introduction to phenomenological psychology\, 2nd ed (Sage\, 2005); Demystifying Therapy (PCCS\, 2006); Tales of Un-knowing (PCCS\, 2006); and The Mirror and The Hammer: challenging therapeutic orthodoxies (Sage\, 2001). Living up to the existential dictum that life is absurd\, Ernesto is also the author of an on-going series of Private Eye novels\, the third of which\, Everything Has A Price\, was published in 2023. \n\n\n\nPlease contact EHNW about this event here via their contact form.

SUMMARY:EHNW Lunch-n-Learn: "Future Minds: A Tapestry of Existentialism and Mental Well-being in the Age of AI"
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Christy Hey\, LPC & Arnaud Verstuyf \n\n\n\nIn-Person & Virtual Hybrid Event:  Live True Counseling 333 SW Taylor Street\, Suite 200 Portland\, OR 97204 and via Zoom \n\n\n\nThe advent of artificial intelligence (AI) brings both promise and peril to the core tenets of existential humanism. While AI has the potential to enhance individual freedom\, automate mundane tasks\, and contribute to a more interconnected society\, concerns arise regarding privacy\, autonomy\, and the erosion of personal responsibility. The collaboration between humans and AI may lead to meaningful synergies or\, if mishandled\, to a sense of alienation. Ethical considerations in mental health practices\, existential anxieties\, and the cultural shifts driven by AI further complicate the relationship between providers and clients. Navigating these complexities requires a careful balance between technological progress and the preservation of existing values and methodologies. In this presentation\, Arnaud will give a basic overview of AI history and where it might be heading; Christy will discuss the current and potential uses and ethical concerns in the field of mental health. \n\n\n\nBefore the ‘Lunch & Learn’\, we recommend watching\, or re-watching\, the movie “Her” from 2013 as a potential – but positive – example of humanity’s relationship with evolving artificial intelligence. \n\n\n\nBios (two speakers): \n\n\n\nChristy Hey\, LPC\, started her career in St. Louis\, Missouri\, as a music therapist working with young people with developmental disabilities and mental health diagnoses. Upon arriving in Oregon in 2009\, she worked at the Oregon State Hospital then Chemawa Indian School before starting her private practice in 2019. Her current practice as a therapist and coach primarily supports neurodivergent adults\, who are often exploring their relationship with social and technological worlds. Through her emerging identity as a digital nomad\, her interests lie at the intersection of culture\, mental health and technology\, traveling and working abroad as much as possible with Arnaud and their two dogs\, Otter and Ellie. \n\n\n\nArnaud Verstuyf’s varied career is marked by both public service and private sector success. He began his professional journey in the private sector\, supporting small businesses\, while pursuing and obtaining a Software Engineering degree from KU Leuven\, Belgium. Following that\, he moved into public service\, providing technological expertise on a pilot project for cultural communication. The next challenge taken was as a consultant\, offering the opportunity to navigate many large companies dealing with supply chain management and production. After meeting and subsequently marrying Christy\, he moved to another continent\, on a journey of personal flexibility while exploring his own community and business ventures. \n\n\n\nPlease contact EHNW about this event here via their contact form.

And yet\, his contributions and influence remain woefully under-appreciated. This conference\, unprecedented in the annals of both psychoanalysis and existential-humanistic psychology\, will re-introduce the legacy\, focus\, and implications of Rank’s genius for a new generation of depth psychologists and psychotherapists.  \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOtto Rank (1884 – 1939) had a highly productive life as a lecturer\, therapist and writer and his work had great influence on many notable figures. Chief among them include the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan\, the client-centered psychotherapist Carl Rogers\, the existential psychoanalyst Rollo May\, the existential therapist Irvin Yalom\, and the cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker. It was his profound influence on May and Rogers in particular that gave birth to existential-humanistic psychology in the U.S. \n\n\n\n\n\nOtto Rank with Spooky\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecifically\, this conference will highlight Rank’s revolutionary contributions primarily in the following areas: \n\n\n\n\nHis move away from an emphasis on the interpretive prowess of the “expert” clinician to a focus on the experiential world of the client and the central healing role of the relationship between the therapist and the client\n\n\n\nHis prioritization of the relevance and significance of the “here and now” experience of the client in the therapeutic encounter\, inclusive of how the client’s psycho-developmental history organically shows up in the “here and now” of therapy – and how that individual developmental trajectory is affected by societal developmental processes\n\n\n\nHis focus on the central role that one’s relationship to existence plays in one’s psychological health and growth\, and its importance beyond biological drives and correlated cognitive structures and functions\n\n\n\nHis influence in spotlighting the essential roles that the experience of birth and the shadow of impermanence play in confronting and making sense of one’s existence\n\n\n\nHis emphases on creativity\, artistry\, will and authenticity in psychological health and growth\n\n\n\nHis consideration and exploration of mystical and spiritual influences in psychological and psycho-social development and healing\n\n\n\n\nToday\, many therapists inherently take for granted and employ truths Rank espoused in differentiating himself from many of the relevant theories\, theorists and trends of his day. Join us for an immersion into the ubiquitous underlying influence of Otto Rank\, particularly as it relates to contemporary depth psychotherapy and existential\, humanistic and psychodynamic psychology. This groundbreaking conference features eight speakers representing a wide range of perspectives on Rank: \n\n\n\nDAY ONE PRESENTATIONS \n\n\n\nRobert KramerOtto Rank and the Creation of Modern PsychotherapyIn 2023 millions of mental health professionals practice therapy worldwide. Almost all of them are following in the footsteps of Rank\, the first psychoanalyst to assert that the quality of the relationship\, not an interpretation\, is the healing factor in psychotherapy. If the 20th century was the century of Freud\, the 21st is shaping up to be that of Rank\, the “brooding genius waiting in the wings\,” as Irvin Yalom calls him.  \n\n\n\nLudwig JanusOtto Rank as PsychohistorianRank showed that the primal preverbal experiences from the beginning of our individual life is present in our adult experience\, but he also showed that this is the case as well in the collective mentalities in history manifest as magic\, mythical and religious experience. In this sense he understood the history of humankind as a process of internalization of earlier reenacted primordial experiences in the societal life. He was the first one who could reflect these facts of human condition. This laid the foundations of psychohistory. \n\n\n\nEllen Handler SpitzOtto Rank on Art\, Artists\, and Creative ProcessOtto Rank\, at the age of 23\, shyly introduced himself to Freud with an essay titled “The Artist.” Rank went on densely\, albeit with remarkable acuity\, authenticity\, and originality to explore the theme of artistic creativity\, specifically\, the mental processes of working artists. He lays bare the dynamics of artists’ inner conflicts\, which arise not only during but often at the anguished beginnings and endings of work. Rank frames these as struggles over birth and death\, and he explores bonds and ruptures between artists’ past and present work\, both their own and that of others. He writes of inspiration and of the role of the muse. This presentation spotlights a selection of nuggets from Rank’s contributions to this field of inquiry. \n\n\n\nMarie Helen BeckerHeavenly EscapeThis presentation is based on Otto Rank’s discussion of the origins of the soul and religion in ART AND ARTIST (1932). Problematic to all humans from primitive to contemporary cultures is the wonder at our physical impermanence and the ensuing desire to defeat transience. Even though the subject of soul is no longer ascribed the popular attention it once was\, the presenter will use her own artwork as an example of her process of rendering an art history of the soul. \n\n\n\nDAY TWO PRESENTATIONS \n\n\n\nMatthew FoxOtto Rank as a ‘new personality type’ Calling for the Unio Mystica: a Reunion of Psyche and CosmosRank observed that “new personality types are created during social and spiritual crises of religious\, political or economic origin.”  Was Rank himself such a new personality type?  In this presentation we will explore Otto Rank’s teachings on the “Unio Mystica\,” (his words) including the role of love and art\, the more-than-rational\, the seeking for a “beyond\,” letting go\, being present to the “Now\,” and creating.  His prophetic role includes moving beyond patriarchy\, “beyond Freud\,” (his words) and Freudian psychology\, beyond the one-sidedly rational and modern consciousness therefore. \n\n\n\nSara EkenstiernaProblems of the Beyond: Exploring Holistic Thought Through Otto Rank and David Bohm The presenter’s own research offers a revision of current positivist understandings of self and wellbeing in mainstream therapeutic psychology\, by elaborating on Otto Rank’s existential-psychodynamic philosophy of the psyche. The particular focus of this presentation is on Rank’s recognition of holistic and co-creative notions of selfhood as essential properties of human existence\, and on how these approaches can further advance contemporary psychotherapeutic practices of the self.  \n\n\n\nSiebrecht VanhoorenTherapy is the Place to BeOne of the many revolutionary ideas Rank launched is that not only the client’s sufferings and joys can be understood in terms of existence. The process of therapy itself is the place and time where we – client and therapist – meet our nothingness\, something-ness and everything-ness: our life and death. The consequences of this vision are far-reaching. Can I\, as a therapist\, be alive and live with my client at this very moment? Can I attune to the existential process I am a part of\, listen to my own ever-changing voice\, and allow myself and my client to be? \n\n\n\nKirk SchneiderRecasting Psychoanalysis in Existential Terms: The Lasting Legacy of Otto RankOtto Rank reframed psychoanalysis in terms of our relation to existence\, beyond and inclusive of our relationship to our biology\, our cognition\, and even ourselves. Rank also delved deeply into the experience of that relationship\, inclusive of our fears\, our sorrows\, and our exuberances—as well as our “here-now” embodiment of such sensibilities. In this light\, and in the light of Robert Kramer’s research on Rank’s impact on both Carl Rogers and Rollo May\, Rank can justifiably be called the founding figure of both existential-humanistic and existential-integrative psychology. In this talk\, Dr. Schneider will describe how prophetic Rank’s reformulation of psychoanalysis has proven to be\, and how vital it is not only for Western psychologies\, but for contemporary industrialized societies as a whole. To elucidate this foundation-shaking thesis for our times\, Dr. Schneider will touch on some of his own work on existential-integrative therapy\, life-enhancing anxiety\, and the cultivation of the sense of awe toward living. \n\n\n\nEach presentation will be followed by interactive small group discussion! \n\n\n\n\nEach day will feature 4 presentation segments and each segment will be divided into 2 sections: the presenter’s delivery of their presentation to the large group followed by everyone being moved into breakout rooms for small group discussion of the presentation.\n\n\n\nEach small group will be co-led by one of the conference presenters and participants will remain in the same small group throughout the 2 days.\n\n\n\nEach day will end with approximately 35 minutes of large group Q & A.\n\n\n\n\nConference registration will be limited to a maximum number of total participants in order to best support opportunities for engagement in the small groups. \n\n\n\nPresenter Bios\n\n\n\nRobert Kramer\, PhD\, was Visiting Professor of Psychology at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest\, where he taught existential-humanistic psychotherapy. During Spring 2022\, he was Professor of Psychoanalysis at ELTE\, only the second person in Hungary to hold this title. The first was Sándor Ferenczi. \n\n\n\nDuring academic year 2015-16\, he was the inaugural International Chair of Public Leadership at the Budapest National University of Public Service. In 2016 he resigned his Chair in protest against the corruption of the Orbán regime. He’s now designing a Rankian leader development program for the Democracy Institute of Central European University in Budapest. The program will address the needs of national and local leaders; politicians; policy experts in public administration and think-tanks; and civil society activists who are working to promote democratic change in Central and Eastern Europe. \n\n\n\nHe has published in The Los Angeles Review of Books\, The Times of Israel (Tel Aviv)\, and The New European (London). He edited and introduced Otto Rank’s A Psychology of Difference: The American Lectures (Princeton University Press\, 1996) and co-edited\, with E. J. Lieberman\, The Letters of Sigmund Freud and Otto Rank: Inside Psychoanalysis (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 2012). In 2022 he published The Birth of Relationship Therapy: Carl Rogers Meets Otto Rank (Psychosozial Press). In 2023 he will publish Otto Rank: A Dream That Interprets Itself with Phoenix Books (U.K.). His next book\, to be published by Oxford University Press in 2024\, is entitled\, Otto Rank and the Creation of Modern Psychotherapy. \n\n\n\nLudwig Janus\, M.D.\, grew up in Essen\, Germany\, and has been a practising psychoanalytic psychotherapist in Dossenheim near Heidelberg since 1975. He is the Past-President of the International Society for Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Medicine (ISPPM) (www.isppm.de)\, Past-President of the German Society for Psychohistory and Political Psychology (www.psychohistorie.de)\, and current head of the “Institute for Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Medicine” (www.praenatalpschologie.de). She sought freedom from the burdens of this unwanted legacy. \n\n\n\nWhile attending Syracuse University\, Marie received a diverse liberal education in a wide array of social sciences such as anthropology\, psychology\, political science\, and philosophy. These all provided much learning but did little to bring enlightenment. Syracuse’s Early Childhood Education program\, with its grounding philosophy of John Dewey charting creative\, democratic classrooms\, helped settle the quest. \n\n\n\nThe distractions of love\, marriage\, children — and several physical moves\, the last one to British Columbia\, Canada — closed the window on work opportunities for some time. 1974 was a year of reworking and editing the rejected manuscript Marxism and Psychoanalysis\, which eventually became Escape from Evil. \n\n\n\nA degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia helped enrich a new career working as a liaison between children\, teachers\, and parents in classrooms from Vancouver\, British Columbia to Owen Sound\, Ontario. Private practice and a career in painting followed and continue to this day. \n\n\n\nMatthew Fox is a spiritual theologian committed to bringing alive the non-dualist spiritual tradition of creation spirituality. He is author of 39 books on spirituality and culture including Original Blessing; The Reinvention of Work; Creativity: Where the Divine and Human Meet; Meister Eckhart: A Mystic-Warrior for Our Times and The Coming of the Cosmic Christ. He considers Otto Rank to be a contemporary mystic and prophet and has written a number of articles on him and taught many classes on him (including one with Robert Kramer).  He founded the University of Creation Spirituality\, is an Episcopal priest\, and a visiting scholar at the Academy of the Love of Learning. \n\n\n\nSara Ekenstierna is founder of Ekenstierna Psykologkonsult and Oakstar Coaching & Consulting. SUMMARY:The Literary Legacy of Existential Psychology w/ Dr Xuefu Wang
DESCRIPTION:Join EHI for the second presentation in its International Existential Scholars Lecture Series!  \n\n\n\nThe Literary Legacy of Existential Psychology: A Comparison of Lu Xun’s ‘Iron House’ and Rollo May’s ‘The Caged Man’\n\n\n\nPresented by: Xuefu Wang\, PhD \n\n\n\nWhen: September 23rd @ 3pm – 4:30pm PT  \n\n\n\nWhere: Online through Zoom  \n\n\n\nFee: $20 General/$10 Elders & Students   \n\n\n\nPresentation Host: Existential-Humanistic Institute  \n\n\n\nImagine an iron house without windows\, absolutely indestructible\, with many people fast asleep inside who will soon die of suffocation. But you know since they will die in their sleep\, they will not feel the pain of death. Now if you cry aloud to wake a few of the lighter sleepers\, making those unfortunate few suffer the agony of irrevocable death\, do you think you are doing them a good turn? \n\n\n\nLu Xun’s metaphor of the Iron House has very rich implications in terms of reflecting on Chinese history\, society\, and the Chinese psyche\, which all have a deep relevance to feudalism. By this metaphor\, Lu Xun intends to bring forth the mental escapism deep-seated in the Chinese psyche or national character. The metaphor can take various forms. For instance\, the feudal history can be the iron house which manipulates or brainwashes people with so-called virtues and moralities. It can also be the psychological or mental symptoms people experience when they try to evade reality. It can be the cultural backwardness that hypnotizes people. It can also be any of the forms wherein organizations\, groups\, circles\, parties\, religions or all kinds of “isms” turn into a pursuit of self-interest and self-service while exploiting others. Dr. Wang will provide an analysis of Lu Xun’s Iron House by contextualizing it within the Chinese culture from the perspective of Lu Xun’s Zhi Mian thinking as well as the Zhi Mian approach to psychotherapy.  \n\n\n\nIn comparison to Lu Xun’s Iron House\, Dr. Wang will also explore Rollo May’s “the caged man”\, originating from the story May wrote in his book\, Man’s Search for Himself. The story depicts an individual being randomly selected by a king and put in a cage\, which very possibly reflects on the human condition of living in an uncertain world and his psychological responses to the powers that hold sway over him – either those of uncertainty or of human manipulation – in a symbolic way. The attitude of the individual with respect to encountering and responding to this manipulation of the king reminds us of the dangers of and the responsibility to protect humanity from being alienated by those in power. In a sense\, it is a theme of human struggle to live as interconnected yet autonomous humans rather than being alienated by destructive and decomposing powers.  \n\n\n\nBoth Lu Xun and Rollo May are existential thinkers as well as existential literacy figures. They both use metaphors to reflect on human existence. With Lu Xun’s reflection on the Chinese psyche or even the Chinese nation as a whole\, he advocates for the destruction of the Iron House to set people free to live as individual humans with respect and dignity. Rollo May\, in addressing the perspective of an individual being persecuted by an alienating power\, touches on a related fundamental theme of humanity.  \n\n\n\nOur Presenter: Xuefu Wang\, PhD\n\n\n\n\nDr. Xuefu Wang (China) is the founder and psychotherapist at Zhi Mian Institute for Psychotherapy\, Nanjing. He has authored 13 books and numerous articles. In his extensive collaboration with existential psychologists across the world\, especially in the US and UK\, he has become a leading practitioner and promoter of existential psychology in China. He is an APA’s Charlotte and Karl Bühler Award recipient (2013).  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMeet Lu Xun – The Father of Modern Chinese Literature

SUMMARY:Recommended: EHNW's August Lunch-n-Learn w/ Scott Kiser\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:The Way of Redemptive Suffering: Transforming Adversity into Growth \n\n\n\nPresenter: Scott Kiser\, PhD Adjunct Faculty\, Saybrook University\, Assc. Faculty\, University of Arizona Global Campus and Assc. Faculty\, Clackamas Community College \n\n\n\nThis Lunch and Learn will be hybrid \n\n\n\nRegistration ends at 10am on Friday\, August 11th \n\n\n\nThis presentation focuses on the experience of “redemptive suffering\,” that is\, psychological pain and suffering in response to adversity that become constructively transformative and growth-producing rather than only destructive. Through exploring the core dynamics of intentionality and meaning-creation\, participants will see how painful life experiences can be transformed into empowering sources of growth by reinterpreting their essential meaning for the suffering individual. Specifically\, this involves a critical choice to experience painful adversity in terms of an actively-thriving gratitude rather than a sense of passive victimization. The particular adverse experience of clinical depression will be utilized as a concrete example and guiding metaphor\, based on Scott’s own personal experience and doctoral dissertation research. The way of redemptive suffering will\, as well\, be presented as a necessary\, expanded and deepened model of resilience\, extending beyond a prevailing concern with merely reestablishing pre-crisis level functioning. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nScott Kiser holds an MA in Marriage & Family Therapy from George Fox University and a PhD in Psychology from Saybrook University. He teaches psychology at Clackamas Community College\, psychology/doctoral research courses and chair’s dissertation committees at the University of Arizona Global Campus\, and foundational/qualitative research courses at Saybrook University. Scott’s areas of academic expertise and specialization are existential-humanistic psychology/psychotherapy and qualitative (case study and phenomenological) research. He has worked as a professional psychotherapist in community mental health agencies as well as private practice\, involving extensive experience practicing individual\, group\, and family therapy. Scott is also a former EHNW board member.

It examines the benefits and costs of holding beliefs humbly and explores potential moderating variables such as personality traits and spiritual practices. \n\n\n\nPresenter Bios\n\n\n\nPam Barela\, MA holds a Master of Art Degree in Human Services Counseling with an emphasis on Marriage and Families and completed first doctoral degree\, Clinical Sexology\, in the spring of 2023. What interventions may open possibility towards greater freedom from pain\, fixation\, and limited choices? \n\n\n\nIn this presentation Lavinia will introduce fundamental principles of human movement\, teach experientally guided cues that can help us as clinicians\, as well as clients\, to uncover blockages and restore (and re-story) available potential. Lavinia will present a case history demonstrating how restoring movement to a client’s feet and thorax resulted in the cessation of chronic pain which allowed the client to stop using analgesics and anxiolytics. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nLavinia is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate recently graduated from Portland State University’s Clinical Rehabilitation counseling program. Prior to becoming a mental health clinician\, she worked as a therapeutic Pilates teacher and movement therapist at her studio\, Equipoise ~ enlightened exercise LLC. There is no such thing as aseparate environment or a separate individual. [Or as Winnicott famously once said: “There isno such thing as a baby\, only a baby and a someone”] At every moment a person is part of afield. His behavior and development is a function of this field. \n\n\n\nIn this professional salon we’ll look at the following: \n\n\n\n\nthe organism as a whole\, which differs from the parts\n\n\n\nthe organism-environment field\, or person-world unity\n\n\n\nthe here and now focus\n\n\n\nthe significance of spontaneous non-verbal gestures\n\n\n\nthe therapy situation as a genuine encounter of human to human and not with a “case”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The world is the natural setting of\, and field for all my thoughts and all my explicit perceptions.Truth does not inhabit only the inner man\, or more accurately\, there is no inner man\, man is inthe world\, and only in the world does he know himself.” \n\nMaurice Merleau-Ponty\n\n\n\nFacilitator\n\n\n\nCarol Swanson\, LCSW\, ACSW has been in private practice in Portland\, OR for over forty years. She cofounded the Portland Gestalt Therapy Training Institute and has trained therapists inEurope\, Australia and the US. SUMMARY:Leopold Szondi's "Fate Analysis": The Lost Central European School of Existential Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Zoltán Köváry\, PhD \n\n\n\nAnnouncing EHI’s International Existential Scholars Lecture Series\n\n\n\nWhy do we make the choices that we do? How conscious are we of the choices we make and what factors most influence those choices? How free are we in the process of making choices\, and to what degree are we predisposed to choose and act in potentially predetermined ways? \n\n\n\nLeopold Szondi (1893-1986)\, proposed that there is a “family unconscious” that can greatly influence our choices; that there is a strong pull toward acting out of a multigenerational family heritage – an unconscious pull that compels us to repeat old and oftentimes dysfunctional patterns. In this way\, Szondi was an originator of the concept of personal transgenerational psychology. Szondi conceived of the family unconscious as existing between Freud’s individual unconscious – which Szondi believed speaks the language of symptoms\, and Jung’s collective unconscious – which Szondi believed speaks the language of symbols. Szondi believed that the family unconscious speaks the language of choices and without enough self-reflection and self-knowledge\, that unconscious force can restrict one’s aliveness and even prevent one from truly being oneself. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Zoltán Kőváry shares his understanding of Leopold Szondi’s “Fate Analysis” and how to employ this approach in psychotherapy to help clients access their capacities to manifest the positive and liberating potential in their family unconscious and to bridge and balance inherent existential polarities like fate and freedom. Professor Kőváry will also integrate his work on the process of psychobiography (a qualitative method in creativity research to unfold personal influences in an artist’s/scientist’s life-work) by discussing how Szondi’s theories support psychobiographical exploration. \n\n\n\nPresentation Outline: \n\n\n\nThe significance of Leopold Szondi’s Fate Analysis \n\n\n\n\nHis concept of the “family unconscious” as the first manifestation of a transgenerational approach in the history of psychology\n\n\n\nUnconscious choices as the language of the family unconscious\n\n\n\nThe Szondi-test\n\n\n\nThe existential aspects of Szondi’s theories after WWII\n\n\n\nThe influence of personal experiences\, Dostoevsky and Kierkegaard on his thought\n\n\n\n\nExperiential segment: Consider the influence of the family unconscious in your life in small groups! \n\n\n\n\nAccording to Szondi\, the family unconscious influences our choices in four areas: the choice of love partners (“ libidotropism”)\, the choice of profession/vocation (“operotropism”)\, the choice of world-view and freiendships (“idealotropism”) and the unconscious choices of illness/death (“morbotropism”).\n\n\n\nWhat kind of patterns can you discover in your family history in these areas? How does it affect your personality\, life-history and fate?\n\n\n\n\nThe practical application of Szondi’s theories in psychobiographical research. \n\n\n\n\nComparing two famous cousin writers in Hungary’s 20th century intellectual life: Géza Csáth and Dezső Kosztolányi\, who both wrote about matricide several times.. How can Szondi’s concept help us to understand their similarities and differences\, their choices and fate? What does this tell us about creativity and human existence?\n\n\n\n\nMarch 4th\, 2023Fee: $20 ($10 for Elders – 65 and over\, and students in a graduate program) \n\n\n\nDr. Zoltán Kőváry\n\n\n\nZoltán Kőváry\, PhD\, is a clinical psychologist\, litterateur and linguist\, writer\, musician and amateur ornithologist. He is an associate professor of Clinical Psychology and Addiction at Eötvös Loánd University\, Budapest\, Hungary and also has a diploma in existential counselling (SFTR). He is the author of four books\, the editor or co-editor of a few others and has published dozens of articles in Hungarian and English on psychoanalysis\, existential psychology\, creativity\, dreams\, psychobiography and ecopsychology. He is also in private practice\, working in an existential context\, and is currently being trained in Daseinsanalysis and Logotherapy. \n\n\n\nFate Analysis Journal Article \n\n\n\nIf you’re interested in registering but would like to find out more about Szondi’s “Fate Analysis”\, read this article written by Szondi expert Enikő Csilla Kiss\, “Personality and the Familial Unconscious in Szondi’s Fate-Analysis” [PDF\, English]. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:EHNW Lunch-n-Learn: Fostering Authenticity
DESCRIPTION:Fostering Authenticity: Character Analytic and Somatic Interventionsin Contemporary Orgone (Reichian) Therapy \n\n\n\nFriday\, February 10th\, from 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM \n\n\n\nVirtual by Zoom: (webinar details provided after registration) \n\n\n\nAll Tickets: $10.00 | Affiliates attend FREERegister here!  \n\n\n\nAll humanistic and existentially based therapies share the understanding that many of the symptoms that clients bring to therapy stem from their inability to live an authentic life.  The fostering of authenticity is therefore one of their primary goals.  Contemporary Orgone (Reichian) Therapy\, a humanistic/existential therapeutic approach based upon the integration of Wilhelm Reich’s character analytic and bioenergetic therapy\, gestalt therapy\, person-centered therapy and self psychology\,  approaches this endeavor through addressing the cognitive\, emotional\, behavioral and somatic defenses that prevent one from making full contact with their authenticity.  It is this interlacing of defenses which Reich termed armor.  Armor is a literal somatic and psychological wall which\, though formed as a means of protection in the process of development\, unfortunately prevents one from making direct contact with self and other and thus prevents one from living an authentic life.  In this talk Daniel will present the basic theoretical and therapeutic principals which guide Contemporary (Orgone) Reichian Therapy practice and through a case presentation portray some steps taken on the therapeutic road to authenticity.   \n\n\n\nDaniel Schiff\, PhD is a psychologist in private practice in Portland\, Oregon with 45 years of clinical experience in the practice of somatic psychotherapy from a Reichian/Gestalt perspective.  He was first exposed to the work of Wilhelm Reich\, Fritz Perls and Carl Rogers in the early 1970’s and has incorporated Reich’s character analytic and somatic focus\, gestalt therapy’s ‘here and now’ process orientation\, and the humanistic/existential approach in his clinical work and teaching ever since. Formerly on the adjunct graduate faculty at Antioch University and Argosy University\, he currently teaches somatic psychology in Lewis and Clark’s graduate school of counseling.  As director of the Somatic Psychotherapy Training Institute-PNW he teaches an introductory course in somatic psychotherapy\, a four-year training program in Contemporary Orgone (Reichian) Therapy\, and provides clinical supervision for both therapists seeking licensure and licensed practitioners. DESCRIPTION:Metaphor | Beyond the Limits of Understanding\n\n\n\nPresented by Joaquin Lopez\, MS\, Professional Counselor Associate \n\n\n\nFriday\, October 21\, 2022\, from 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM \n\n\n\nVirtual by Zoom: (webinar details provided after registration) \n\n\n\nAll Tickets: $10.00 /EHNW Affiliates attend FREE \n\n\n\nWhy do metaphors hold so much power? How can we use metaphors in a clinical setting that is therapeutic and productive for both the counselor and the client? \n\n\n\nMetaphor is the language of transformation. Since time immemorial humans have expressed the awe and wonder of the universe through the use of metaphor. As a literary device\, the metaphor constructs meaning through comparisons by using one object in place of another. Thus\, going beyond the known form and meaning of an expressed object to evoke a message or explanation. The use of metaphor ushers in the opportunity to go beyond what we believe to be true. In the counseling office\, metaphors give permission to explore the unknown\, to see what cannot be seen\, and to get in touch with aspects of our experience in a unique way to forge new meaning. \n\n\n\nMetaphor | Beyond the Limits of Understanding will first examine metaphor through a poetic and literary lens identifying its parts and functions. After which will follow an investigation of the use of metaphor in a clinical setting from a theoretical perspective and its applications with clients. The discussion will also include a review of tools to explore metaphor through circumambulation and word association. \n\n\n\nPresenter Bio\n\n\n\nJoaquin is a Jungian-existential oriented counselor registered as a Professional Counselor Associate with the State of Oregon. He graduated from the Portland State University CACREP-accredited Master’s program in counseling. The cost of a “Friday-Only” ticket is $50. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE WORKSHOP:\n\n\n\nExistential-phenomenological approaches continue to attract more and more mental health professionals from diverse orientations to enliven their work with this experiential way of understanding the human experience of their clients. \n\n\n\nA wide-range of practitioners with different therapeutic orientations are exploring this approach as a way to reach their clients in a deeper way. At the same time\, its potential is sometimes not easily recognized\, and is even seen as a challenge to more “traditional” approaches. An existential-phenomenological approach is an invitation to more deeply understand the experience of another from an inter-relational stance that not only values\, but admires the mystery of persons as well as existence itself. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, participants will explore the main themes of this existential-phenomenological approach in a way that is accessible and in close contact to our subjective experience. At its root\, this approach invites us to begin the journey from our own subjective experience. \n\n\n\nParticipants will also deepen our understanding to the varying levels of contact involved in this approach and gain a better understanding of the worldview\, attitudes\, and methods that makes up this approach. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will be of help for mental health therapists of any orientation that wish to widen their scope of more deeply understanding another person. It will also be helpful for seasoned as well as newer therapists that are looking to deepen their comprehension and application of the existential-phenomenological approach. \n\n\n\nWORKSHOP SCHEDULE\n\n\n\nDay 1: Friday\, October 7th\, 2022 6pm-9pm \n\n\n\nInspired by Gabriel Roth’s five rhythms\, on day one we will explore existence as being made of encounters\, relations and dialogues with the world\, as well as with ourselves and others. \n\n\n\nThis will consist of a reflection with movement accompanied by meaningful music and the energy generated by the attendees. \n\n\n\nThis will be an experiential work where attendees are invited to bring comfortable clothing to dance or move around the room. Please note that there is no obligation to participate in any particular way\, in the spirit of this approach\, honor your subjective experience as it unfolds. \n\n\n\nThis evening session available as stand alone module. \n\n\n\nDay 2: Saturday\, October 8th\, 2022 9am-5pm \n\n\n\nThis day will mainly consist of lecture from Dr. Martinez-Robles where he will integrate various experiential exercises and reflections conducted in small groups. \n\n\n\nThis day will also include a live therapy demonstration where Dr. Martinez-Robles and a volunteer will carry out a full therapy session from this existential-phenomenological perspective. \n\n\n\nDay 3: Sunday\, October 9th\, 9am-12pm \n\n\n\nIn our final day of this workshop\, Dr. Martinez-Robles will conclude the lecture portion and we’ll also focus on questions from the attendees. Question themes can be related to the theoretical\, professional applications\, and/or related to the previous days’ demonstration. Through the Q&A\, we hope to further deepen different aspects of this vibrant approach to being with another person.

SUMMARY:3 Key Frames\, Attitudes\, and Skills of Existential-Humanistic Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by: Bob Edelstein\, LMFT\, Founder of EHNW and Former President \n\n\n\nThis presentation will define\, discuss\, and demonstrate these three key frames\, attitudes\, and skills of existential-humanistic psychotherapy. They are: \n\n\n\nBeing versus DoingBeing drives the therapy – not doing. Doing is secondary; it is the result of what emerges from being.Cultivation of the I-Thou RelationshipThe I-Thou relationship refers to the sacredness of the relationship\, experienced by both client and therapist\, that goes beyond any overt transaction.Deep Listening Deep listening is the ability to listen with a deeply attuned sensitivity to the clients’ experience.\n\n\n\nThese frames\, attitudes\, and skills can be applied to any modality to better enhance your support and engagement with your clients.

SUMMARY:EHNW July Salon on Internal Family System (IFS)
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Internal Family System concepts and interventions from an Existential-Humanistic perspective\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Via Zoom \n\n\n\nFacilitated by EHNW Affiliate\, Frank Canepa\, Professional Counselor Associate \n\n\n\nJoin EHNW for an informal discussion about Internal Family Systems and how this model relates to the E-H perspective. \n\n\n\nInternal Family Systems is a therapy model that conceptualizes all people as having an “inner family” made up of parts and the Self. These parts are considered full personalities\, not one dimensional characters\, that each have their own story and may need healing/unburdening. The “Self” is an inherent inner healer that does not get damaged in the same way as parts; it is resilient. We will discuss IFS concepts and interventions. \n\n\n\nMaterial to be discussed: \n\n\n\nWhat is Internal Family Systems? Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym8o762U7ucFull demonstration session with IFS founder and a real client: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGfrJu-Ck8oA longer introduction video by the founder (90min): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lw1UyTxUENI\n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nFrank Canepa\, Professional Counselor Associate\, has a background in philosophy and a special interest in integrating an Existential-Humanistic foundation with the Internal Family Systems model of the person. He works in Beaverton\, Oregon. In addition to being a therapist\, Frank is a musician\, father\, husband\, and lover of stories.
