SUMMARY:EHNW Lunch-n-Learn: Psilocybin Sessions for Existential and Death Anxiety
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Lindsey Lerner\, PhD \n\n\n\nPsilocybin Sessions for Existential and Death Anxiety\n\n\n\nDate: Friday\, September 12\, 2025Time: 1pm–2:30pm Pacific TimeFee: $20 for non-affiliates. $15 for students. $0 for EHNW affiliates \n\n\n\nOnline: via ZoomHost: Existential-Humanistic Northwest (EHNW) \n\n\n\nParticipants will gain a better understanding of Oregon’s psilocybin service model\, including the roles of preparation\, administration sessions\, and integration\, while also appreciating the sacred indigenous roots of psilocybin usage- gaining a better understanding of how meaning\, presence\, and authenticity can guide this work. Through case examples\, participants will examine how a single psilocybin session can help a client move toward greater acceptance and aliveness\, and how\, as therapists\, we can ethically and skillfully provide support throughout this process. Participants will also reflect on our own views of life\, death\, and meaning-making. \n\n\n\nIf you are curious about the clinical use of psychedelics or interested in opening your mind to the use of new avenues of care to help with existential despair\, then Lindsey and EHNW invite you to join them for this workshop.  \n\n\n\nFrom Lindsey\, “I come to you humbly as a teacher\, but also as a lifelong student and hope that we can all learn from one another during this lunch and learn presentation.”” \n\n\n\nAbout the presenter: \n\n\n\nDr. Lindsey Lerner is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist\, Licensed Psilocybin Facilitator\, death doula\, and psychonaut working and residing in Portland\, Oregon. She has been working in mental health for the past 18 years and has been part of the psychedelic world for half her life. She has been curious about consciousness\, death and dying (and near death experiences)\, non-ordinary states\, existential thought and meanin-making since she was a young child\, and utilizes the intersection of her personal and professional experiences to guide her work and advocacy\, with a deep reverence for the originators of medicine\, for the medicine\, and the seekers of medicine. \n\n\n\nRegistration Deadline: Registration for EHNW’s event will close 24hrs before the event starts. Please make sure to register beforehand so they can email Zoom links and event info. \n\n\n\nRegistration Page >> \n\n\n\nPlease contact EHNW about this event  here via their contact form.

SUMMARY:Philosophical Resources for Clinicians
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by: Carol Swanson\, LCSW and Gestalt Practitioner\n\n\n\nDates: September 2025 – May 2026. Meeting first Friday each month. First Meeting is September 5thTime: 1:15pm–2:30pm Pacific TimeFee: $300 for for full seminar \n\n\n\nOnline: via ZoomHost: Existential-Humanistic Northwest (EHNW) \n\n\n\nThis is the 3rd year this seminar is being held. It is designed for psychotherapists\, psychoanalysts\, and clinicians who are interested in deepening their work through philosophical reflection and dialogue. We will explore ethical\, hermeneutic\, and humanistic dimensions of clinical practice by reading Donna Orange’s The Suffering Stranger: Hermeneutics for Everyday Clinical Practice. In this profound and accessible text\, Orange brings together five influential clinicians—Sándor Ferenczi\, Frieda Fromm-Reichmann\, Donald Winnicott\, Heinz Kohut\, and Bernard Brandchaft—and places them in conversation with two major philosophical figures: Hans-Georg Gadamer\, representing the hermeneutic tradition\, and Emmanuel Levinas\, with his radical ethics of responsibility to the Other.  \n\n\n\nIf you’re a clinician who finds yourself hungry for deeper reflection\, who enjoys rich conversation\, and who is curious about how philosophy can illuminate and support your practice—this seminar is for you. \n\n\n\nRegistration Page >> \n\n\n\nPlease contact EHNW about this event  here via their contact form.

SUMMARY:Salon: Our Life’s Narrative and Meaning Making
DESCRIPTION:With Sonja Saltman\, MFT – EHI Core Instructor\, and Joshua Diliberto\, LCHC\, NCC\, RYT- EHI Teaching Assistant\n\n\n\nDate/Time:  Tuesday\, August 26th\, 2025 at 11am-1pm Pacific | 2pm-4pm Eastern Location: Online Via Zoom Registration fee: $25 for General tickets. To promote effective discussion we are limiting registration to 30 people. We do not want cost to be an issue. We offer economic inequality/hardship tickets for $10. Please contact Michelle via the form to get a code for reduced ticket. Host: Existential-Humanistic Institute (EHI) \n\n\n\nOn August 26th\, EHI is hosting a two-hour virtual community space for exploring “Our Life’s Narrative and Meaning Making.” Personal\, relational\, and cosmological aspects are considered in group discussion\, practical demonstration\, possible dyad or small group engagement—we will be flexible to follow emergent wishes from the group. EHI is excited to be continuing the series of experiential salons and to hold one more before the EHI team takes their summer break. The intention for these salons is to honor EHI’s commitment to experiential learning as well as the time honored group process of discussion and integration. \n\n\n\nGeneral Outline (2 hours):  \n\n\n\n● Welcome Introduction and check-in  \n\n\n\n● Conceptual frames for Our Life’s Narrative and Meaning Making:  The concept of self calls for the person to transform the pronoun I into a recognition of essential qualities with which the person may be identified. Real self\, nuclear self\, narcissistic self and false self all refer to essential qualities of the person. They are representative of the person and this patterning process organizes personal characteristics into coherent clusters from which we form our inner sense of self. Based on this sense of inner self we form our “life stories”. They are the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves and that are sometimes small work of fictions we believe to be true. Any new experience then might be filtered through this belief about our coherent self\, might therefore be distorted.Meaning making can be the process of restructuring of the patterns of the self and thus confronting myths that were created by parts of ourselves. The person is invited to examine incoming new information without filtering it through already preexisting faulty assumptions to reemerge with a new sense of meaning for ourselves. \n\n\n\n● Demo on Our Life’s Narrative and Meaning Making  \n\n\n\n● Group Discussion\, Attendee/EHI Demo\, or Experiential Dyad Exercise: we will decide in the moment as a group \n\n\n\n● Final Large Group Process \n\n\n\n As we acknowledge that the word “salon” implies a more free flowing structure this is a flexible outline that will be modified by Sonja and Josh to work with what is happening in the moment.

SUMMARY:Recommend: EHNW Lunch-n-Learn

As mental health professionals we are required to understand suicide risks and do our best to avert such events as adeptly as we can.I hold acute awareness that medical and mental health clinicians are human and have a very high incidence of suicide and suicide ideation\, as do first responders trained to intervene in grim and often ghastly situations: firefighters\, police\, and EMTs. When I talk with colleagues about the fact that our own and our colleagues’ suicide risks need to be a topic for suicide prevention education\, the sort of response I get is\, “I’ve never heard a presentation on clinicians’ suicide risk.” I’ve been stumbling toward the development of a 3-hour CE presentation on this topic for 3 years and hope to have it online in September 2025. In this brief lunch and learn presentation\, I will offer a smattering of data and some personal stories\, share assertions reflected upon in-depth\, and offer resources.I would like to engage with you in a discussion about medical and mental health clinicians’ suicide risks and self-care strategies\, as well as those of others working in this muddy\, hazardous space.” \n\n\n\nPresenter Bio\n\n\n\nMichaele Dunlap\, PsyD\, completed college at Reed\, earned a master’s in counseling at Lewis & Clark and a Psy.D. at Pacific University. Michaele is licensed in Oregon and Washington and practice at Mentor Professional Corp. in NW Portland (503-227-2027).Michaele has been an organizer and presenter of professional continuing education events since 1989. An Existential value is that we are all Beings-in-the-World. We are not separate from what is going on. It impacts us regardless of whether we actively engage or not. How do we support our clients who are experiencing the effects of polarization\, suffering\, confusion\, and despair? How do we facilitate the exploration of these concerns? How do we deal with our own experience of the current political situation? How does it impact us as we seek to support our clients? \n\n\n\nBiosBob Edelstein\, LMFT\, MFT\, is an Existential-Humanistic psychotherapist with over fifty years of experience. He provides individual and couples therapy\, as well as consultation\, supervision\, workshops\, and trainings for clinicians and students. He is a blogger for Psychology Today and has published articles on the existential-humanistic perspective\, including a chapter entitled “Frames\, Attitudes\, and Skills of an Existential Humanistic Psychotherapist” in The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology\, 2nd Edition. He has presented multiple workshops on Existential-Humanistic Psychotherapy\, including presenting at both the 2nd and 3rd Existential Psychotherapy World Congresses. Skipped over experiences can be valuable treasures for gaining self-knowledge. Simple events like a daily routine can escape notice\, events that give context and continuity to life. Understanding and highlighting breathes meaning into ordinary experiences. \n\n\n\n● Experiential Demo/Exercise: “Exploring the ordinary to the remarkable” (35 min)  \n\n\n\n● Dyads (30 min) \n\n\n\n● Final Large Group Process: (15 min) \n\n\n\n As we acknowledge that the word “salon” implies a more free flowing structure this is a flexible outline that will be modified by Sonja and Josh to work with what is happening in the moment.

SUMMARY:Recommended Lunch-n-Learn: So\, CBT & EH Walk Into a Bar…
DESCRIPTION:EHNW Lunch and Learn  \n\n\n\nSo\, CBT & EH Walk Into a Bar…\n\n\n\nFacilitated by: Kayla Birkeland\n\n\n\nDate: Friday\, 4/11/2025Time: 1pm–2:30pm Pacific Daylight Savings TimeFee: $20 General  \n\n\n\nOnline: via Zoom \n\n\n\nIn this Lunch & Learn\, Kayla will be taking the time to explore the proclivity towards an either/or mindset when it comes to how we approach work with clients and find our space in the world of theoretical orientations (especially early on). Specifically\, she will be discussing her turbulent journey of navigating the dualism that was both absorbed and imposed on her approach to CBT and E-H\, and how over time\, she has come to release her grip on a dualistic mindset and discover a beautiful harmony between the two. This journey involved learning to discover and embrace the different parts of who she is and allow her experiences to shape how she engages the world in a way that resonates with the authenticity of her soul. Participants will be exploring the impact of attachments and domestication (as described in ancient Toltec wisdom) and how to recognize and exercise choice amid a world that tries so hard to make us fit the status quo. \n\n\n\nBio Statement from Kayla: “I’m Kayla Birkeland and I’m a licensed therapist in the state of Washington. I recently transitioned (September 2024) to a group counseling practice in Vancouver\, WA\, and currently provide individual therapy to people 11 years old and up. Previously\, I worked with youth in schools (K-12). I started my journey in community mental health and then spent 4 years at a small special education behavioral school in the Vancouver School District. My professional passions are working with those who have experienced trauma\, the neurodivergent community\, and those who are part of disenfranchised groups. I feel strongly about social justice and helping people find their voice and find spaces where their voices can be heard. Personally\, I have been married for 14 ½ years to a wonderfully supportive spouse accepting of all my quirks and neurospicyness. In my free time I enjoy boxing\, being outdoors\, and spending time with loved ones.” \n\n\n\nRegistration Dead register cheers\, Michelleline: Registration will close 24hrs before the event starts. SUMMARY:Strategies that Deepen Therapeutic Presence: An Existential-Humanistic Perspective w/ Orah Krug\, PhD\, LMFT
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date! \n\n\n\nPresented by EHI Cofounder: Orah Krug\, PhD\, LMFT \n\n\n\nDate/Time:  Friday\, March 28th\, 2025 at 1pm-3pm Pacific | 4pm-6pm Eastern | 8pm-10pm UTCLocation: Online Via Zoom Enrollment: $25 for General tickets. $10 Elder/Student. We aim to support those who find cost an issue. We offer economic inequality/hardship tickets for $10. Please contact Michelle via the form on our contact page to get a code for reduced ticket. Host: Existential-Humanistic Institute (EHI)CE*: Approved for 2 CE credits \n\n\n\nThe workshop offers practical strategies for therapists to enhance their therapeutic presence\, a fundamental aspect of effective therapy. Participants will learn through discussion and demonstration how to cultivate a deeper connection with clients by actively following the therapeutic process and offering insightful process comments. Process comments deepen the work by focusing for example\, not simply on the “problem” the client brings to therapy but on their way of relating to the problem. The workshop will also explore ways to deepen subjective presence such as “searching” and guided meditation. These interventions cultivate curiosity and invite discovery of something new for the client\, perhaps a newfound empathy for themselves or a new understanding of a significant relationship or experience. Additionally\, participants will discover through discussion and demonstration how working in the here and now: a) strengthens the therapeutic relationship\, and b) focuses the client on the way they are relating. Here and now works focuses on the interpersonal process between client and therapist as it unfolds in the present moment. Grounded in the Existential-Humanistic (E-H) approach\, these strategies will provide valuable tools for therapists seeking to create a more profound and impactful therapeutic experience for their clients.  \n\n\n\nGeneral Outline (2 hours):  \n\n\n\n● Welcome Introduction (5 min)  \n\n\n\n● Process Comments: discussion\, demonstration\, and practice (35 mins)  \n\n\n\n● Deepening subjective presence: discussion\, demonstration\, and practice (35 mins)   \n\n\n\n● Working in the Here and Now: discussion\, demonstration\, and practice (35 mins) \n\n\n\n● Final Debrief/Q&A (10 mins) \n\n\n\nOrah Krug\, PhD is recognized in her field as a master clinician\, supervisor\, teacher and author. SUMMARY:E-H Reading Group via EHNW in Portland
DESCRIPTION:E-H Reading Group – Open to All \n\n\n\nFacilitated by: River Heisler w/ EHNW Board Members Ryan Brown and Justin Rock \n\n\n\nThis Existential/Humanistic (EH) reading group is a space to engage creatively\, constructively\, and spontaneously with the works of philosophers belonging to a large stream of “existential” and “phenomenological” thought (terms with which we will certainly experiment and contend). The group will be a space to critique\, question\, and experience the works which influence what it means to call oneself an “existential” therapist\, “existentialist”\, or an “existentially”-influenced human. Starting with the idea of alterity\, and what the experience of the Other can tell us about being human\, we will plunge headfirst into Emmanuel Levinas’ Totality and Infinity (November). Please read as much as you are able! Please also read Toward a Liberation Psychology [translated by Adrianne Aron]” by Ignacio Martin-Baro\, from the volume Writings for a Liberation Psychology\, as it provides a deep and meaningful framework from which to question and frame how we may engage in this type of critique from a consciousness-raising perspective. \n\n\n\nThis group started in November. Please feel free to contact River Heisler\, at heis6654@pacificu.edu\, with any questions!

The E-H approach is based on core ways of being and working with clients that help facilitate greater awareness\, greater sense of choice\, increased agency and adaptiveness and a deeper connection to self and others – all in the service of healing and growing. There are core capacities and skills an E-H therapist uses to help clients effectively explore and work through their existential predicaments so they can more fully access what deeply matters to them. \n\n\n\nIn this 16-hour online training\, leading instructors in the E-H field will provide theoretical explanation and experiential opportunities for the development and/or strengthening of skills and capacities that are not only core to the E-H approach but can also support therapists of many other modalities cultivate a foundation for optimizing their technical skills. Topics covered include: \n\n\n\n\nThe cultivation of presence as both the ground of therapy and one of its primary objectives\n\n\n\nThe focus on the “living moment” in working with the “here-and-now” experience of clients – staying with what presents itself phenomenologically rather than employing theoretical interventions\n\n\n\nThe differentiation between primary\, direct experience and secondary\, interpretive experience – and the emphasis on working with phenomenological experience\n\n\n\nThe meaning-making process and the formation of the Self-and-World Construct – helping client and therapist understand identity construction and de-construction\n\n\n\nHow to work with the client’s ways of being in the world and how to utilize the therapist-client relationship to help shift unhelpful ways of being\n\n\n\nHow to identify and work through clients’ inner battles in order to support their longings to emerge\, and feel more choice-ful and psychospiritually whole\n\n\n\nIntegrating and embodying your theoretical beliefs and authentic sense of self in your work as a therapist\n\n\n\n\nThis training is ideal for those who have not yet had any intensive training in E-H therapy or for those who have and are seeking a refresher or reinforcement of what they’ve learned: this training works in and of itself but can also be a precursor to the longer residential training EHI holds or even a helpful follow-up to the residential training. \n\n\n\nTuition Fee ScheduleRegular Tuition: $685* for General (Licensed/Pre-Licensed) | *$635 for Elders (65 and older) and Students (enrolled in a Masters or PhD level program).Early Early Bird Offer through 8/15/24: $615 General | $565 Elder/StudentEarly Bird Offer 8/16/24-9/15/24: $645 General | $595 Elder/Student \n\n\n\nTwo Payment Options Available: If you register by 9/15/24 you can either pay in full or choose the split-payment option. Personal\, relational\, and cosmological aspects are considered in group discussion\, practical demonstration\, small group engagement\, and will be flexible in nature to follow emergent wishes from the group. \n\n\n\nGeneral Outline (2 hours): \n\n\n\n\nWelcome Introduction\, poem\, check-ins (25 minutes)\n\n\n\nConceptual frames for understanding Person of Therapist (20 min total)Intro “The Person of the Therapist in Practice”Sonja\, and Josh share conceptual definitionsIntroduce personal context as example of one’s own way of being\, seeing\, and holding relational psychotherapeutic worldsMembers are invited to provide their own definitions\n\nWhole group process of topic\, encouraging first person engagement and description that may also involve other sources\n\n\n\n\n\nExperiential exercise: “Exploring how it is to be The Person of the Therapist.” (35 min)We ask for a volunteer “client” and Sonja and Josh both individually respond to the client (we could add a couple of responses from the group as well). We follow this interaction with a perusal of what feelings/thoughts within us\, the therapists\, led to a given response reaction. That means looking at arrows that provoked choosing a particular path. What evoked curiosity and interest in the therapist for the next interaction? What does this choice reveal about the person of the therapist?\n\nWe can make contact with the movement (the music) being experienced from the group in the here and now stay with it as a whole\, and as it flows between persons.\n\n\n\n\n\nSmall groups (25 min)\n\n\n\nFinal Large Group Process: (15 min)\n\nDiscussion\, Integration\, shared resources\, and announcements\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs we acknowledge that the word “salon” implies a more free flowing structure this is a flexible outline that will be modified by Sonja and Josh to work with what is happening in the moment. \n\n\n\nFor Reference: \n\n\n\nThere is no mandatory reading for this offering but the text book\, Existential-Humanistic Therapy\, 2nd Edition by Schneider and Krug published APA\, and The Art of Counseling\, revised edition 1989 are resources we would like to mention.

From an E-H perspective\, the point is not to fully and accurately interpret the dream—it can’t be done\, and misses the point.  \n\n\n\nJust as we learn to work with clients’ processes in the here-and-now\, E-H dream work involves bringing the dream into the here-and-now in order to find what is most alive\, most curious\, most baffling or disturbing to the client\, and to facilitate an in vivo exploration – often leading to deeper contact with a less conscious part of oneself.  \n\n\n\nWorking with dreams from the Humanistic perspective (in this case\, from the Gestalt perspective)\, the dreamer is helped to play out parts of her dream as aspects of her own existence\, i.e. a working through of the dream as a present event rather than past history and as action rather than a basis for interpretation.  Attendees will receive a didactic introduction to dream work through a Gestalt/E-H lens\, get to see 2 live demonstrations (and perhaps be one of the 2 volunteers)\, and engage in discussion about this approach to dream work. \n\n\n\nPresentation Outline: \n\n\n\n\nFinal Debrief/Q&A (25 mins)\n\n\n\nWelcome/Introduction (10 mins)\n\n\n\nDidactic Presentation (15 mins)\n\n\n\nFirst Dream Work Demonstration (25 mins)\n\n\n\nDebrief/Q&A (20 mins)\n\n\n\nSecond Dream Work Demonstration (25 mins)\n\n\n\n\nAdditional info: Scott wrote an blog post on Dream Work from an E-H perspective on The Existential Moment\, read Dream Work post here. \n\n\n\n\nThis program has been approved for 2 CE credits for full participation. Separate CE Fee: $18APA Division 32\, Society for Humanistic Psychology is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. APA Division 32\, Society for Humanistic Psychology maintains responsibility for this program and its content. \n\n\n\n\nEHI endeavors to make offerings accessible for interested learners.  Please email or call Michelle via the contact page for disability accommodations and more course info. \n\n\n\nLMFTs\, LCSWs\, LPCs: You too might be eligible for APA Continuing Education Credit for your renewals!  \n\n\n\nState licensing boards for LPCs\, LCSWs\, and LMFT’s often accept CE credits from an APA Approved Provider for their continuing education requirements. Please check with your Board to ensure they accept CEs from an APA Approved Provider like Society for Humanistic Psychology. (CA BBS takes these CE credits).

We’ll discuss the concept of threat to status\, and how trauma intensifies our experience of threat. We’ll wrap up by looking at how we can integrate the science into a humanistic/existential frame\, specifically using the concept of negativity bias as an example. \n\n\n\nBio:Chris Wilson\, PsyD\, is a retired psychologist who studied for many years with Bob Edelstein\, LMFT\, MFT\, and worked therapeutically from a humanistic/existential frame. SUMMARY:EHNW: A Drama Informed Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by: Joaquin Lopez\, LPC\n\n\n\nEHNW in Portland Hybrid Lunch-n-Learn Event  \n\n\n\nDate: Friday 6/14/2024Time: 1pm–2:30pm Pacific Daylight Savings TimeFee: $10 General Hybrid Event in Portland\, Oregon \n\n\n\nWhat insights can we glean from adopting a drama-informed perspective on life\, enriching the human experience and our understanding of the world? How can a drama-informed perspective influence motivation and the ability to think creatively about healing? Above all\, how do we motivate clients to embody themselves and become the lead actors in their dramas\, work through the circumstances they have been given\, and move beyond their fate?Reflecting on his experiences and observations as an artist and mental health counselor\, Joaquin Lopez\, LPC\, will present ideas that construct what he coins as a drama-informed perspective toward life. This perspective is garnered from years of producing storytelling events about local community members and noticing common themes in their trials and tribulations. He explores the power of storytelling as a tool rooted in existential-humanistic theory for both community and personal healing. Joaquin will draw from real life examples in working with adults in and outside counseling office. \n\n\n\nBio:Joaquin Lopez is a mental health counselor whose therapeutic frame is Jungian-existential. He serves on the Existential-Humanistic Northwest Professional Organization (EHNW) board and\, in the fall\, will begin seminar at the Carl Jung Institute of Santa Fe. Selected to serve as a Creative Laureate for the City of Portland for 2021-2026\, he advocates for arts & culture\, and creativity. As a performing artist\, he blends music\, storytelling\, and language to inspire community engagement and healing. He has over twenty years of small business experience in the service industry. Joaquin managed professional leadership programs for grassroots and established Latino leaders at the non-profit organization Latino Network. He continues to serve as a leadership consultant for non-profit organizations. His private practice is in Theel House\, located in the historic district of Beaverton\, Oregon. \n\n\n\nRegistration & More Info >> \n\n\n\nPlease contact EHNW about this event  here via their contact form.

SUMMARY:Experiential Democracy Dialogue with Kirk Schneider
DESCRIPTION:Experiential Democracy Dialogue: Existential Approach to Conflict Mediation\n\n\n\nDate and time: Wed\, 22 May 2024 10:00 – 13:00 Pacific [GMT-7]\n\n\n\nHosted and Presented by: OnlineEvents.co.uk and The Existential Movement \n\n\n\nLink to Register: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/experiential-democracy-dialogue-existential-approach-to-conflict-mediation-tickets-900466789407 \n\n\n\nPre purchase access to the recording\, if you cannot make the event. \n\n\n\nJoin The Existential Movement in partnership with OnlineEvents.co.uk for a transformative workshop led by Dr. Kirk Schneider\, a prominent figure in existential-humanistic and existential-integrative psychology. In this session\, Dr. Schneider will unveil and demonstrate the Experiential Democracy Dialogue\, a pioneering method he has developed to counteract the deep-seated and perilous polarization affecting our societies and the wider world. This polarization is not only widespread but also represents one of the most pressing social and psychological challenges of our time. Dr. Schneider advocates for an urgent\, depth\, and existentially oriented approach to healing. \n\n\n\nThe Experiential Democracy Dialogue is designed to facilitate meaningful conversations between individuals who find themselves on opposing sides of ideological divides. During the workshop\, Dr. Schneider will introduce participants to his innovative approach\, followed by a live demonstration featuring two individuals representing differing perspectives on a current issue. Participants will then have the opportunity to engage in the dialogue themselves\, working in pairs to explore the method under Dr. Schneider’s guidance. The workshop will conclude with a group discussion\, allowing for reflection and shared insights. \n\n\n\nThis workshop aims not to spark debate but to foster a process of re-humanization\, encouraging us to view our ideological “opponents” with more of a sense of discovery than presumption. By doing so\, we hope to increase the chances of finding actionable common ground or\, at the very least\, expand our ability to coexist peacefully and respectfully. Whether you’re a professional in conflict mediation\, a student of psychology\, or simply someone interested in contributing to societal healing\, this workshop offers valuable insights into bridging divides and enhancing communal harmony. \n\n\n\nPRE PURCHASE the RECORDING\n\n\n\nThis workshop will be recorded and you can use the ticket function to pre-purchase the recording before the event. This will be useful for colleagues who are not able to attend the event live and also for those who attend the event live and want to watch it again. \n\n\n\nZOOM\n\n\n\nThis workshop will be hosted on the Zoom meeting platform where we will use our cameras and microphones to interact with each other as a group. \n\n\n\nSELF-SELECT FEE\n\n\n\nThe self-select fee is a radical inclusion policy to open learning for all colleagues. The guide price for this event is £20.00\, however\, we appreciate that income varies greatly in different locations and circumstances. Please contribute what you can to help us maintain inclusive professional training. \n\n\n\nThe Movement\n\n\n\nThe Existential Movement exists to reduce interpersonal conflict and psychological suffering and to enhance well-being in the community. It is a non-religious\, non-political movement\, using existential ideas derived from existential philosophy\, psychotherapy\, and psychology to achieve these aims. Its motto is to ‘bring wisdom to the world’. \n\n\n\nThe Existential Movement is composed of international members who wish to pursue the aims as the Existential Movement of enhancing emotional and spiritual health and well-being within the communities of each nation. \n\n\n\nThe movement is administered by a steering committee that directs and coordinates the Movement’s international activities. This is located at the Existential Academy\, in London. The Existential Academy is a not-for-profit community interest company\, whose motto is to bring philosophy to the community. \n\n\n\nThe movement is supported and given advice by an international advisory board\, of 24 outstanding professionals in the field of existential psychology and psychotherapy. The board meets three times per year and had its first meeting on 6th May 2023\, in Athens\, at the third World Congress for Existential Therapy. \n\n\n\nThe first President of the Existential Movement is its founder\, Professor Emmy van Deurzen\, who is internationally known as an expert in this field. She will be supported and guided by the steering committee and the International Advisory Board.

SUMMARY:The Society of Humanistic Psychology 17th Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:University of Michigan in Ann Arbor \n\n\n\nTheme: Old Saybrook 3\n\n\n\n“Old Saybrook 3” commemorates the 60th anniversary of the original Old Saybrook conference in 1964\, where humanistic psychology was formalized. It also serves as a follow-up to the “Old Saybrook 2” conference in 2000\, which aimed both to rekindle the Third Force vision of psychology articulated at “Old Saybrook 1” and to re-vision humanistic psychology for the new millennium. Now\, almost a quarter-century later\, to keep humanistic psychology relevant for new and future generations\, it is again time to recontextualize our movement in and for the 2020s. How can humanistic psychology actualize itself today to meet the needs of a fast-paced\, distracted\, survival-focused\, experientially-avoidant\, interpersonally-isolated\, rating- and metric-centered\, systems-blind\, toxically-masculine\, xenophobic\, inequitized\, traumatized\, polarized\, technocratic\, post-truth\, post-pandemic society-in-transition? Paradoxically\, to accomplish that undertaking\, “Old Saybrook 3” also celebrates the wisdom of our elders and reminds us not to turn a blind eye to their rich and enriching intellectual and experiential contributions. How might we demonstrate that humanistic psychology is\, far from being a mere historical relic\, well-equipped in its core values and theory/philosophy\, pluralistic methods\, and robust\, decades-long canon of research/scholarship to resonate with the 2020s zeitgeist? And\, with that\, what can we do to promote an I-Thou way of being in an increasingly I-It world? We look forward to being with you in March! \n\n\n\n— Dr. Andrew Bland\, Division 32 President (2023-2024) \n\n\n\nKeynote Speakers \n\n\n\nHeidi M. SUMMARY:Update: EHNW's "Supervision: An Existential Therapy Perspective" Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Postponed as of February 15\, 2024: This event has been canceled on March 9th due to unforeseen circumstances. Please check back with EHNW in Portland for updates as this workshop is intended to be rescheduled. New date still to be announced. \n\n\n\nFacilitated by: Professor Ernesto Spinelli \n\n\n\nVirtual Event:  EHNW will send Zoom login after registration \n\n\n\nThe supervision of therapists by their colleagues has become one of the primary requirements for continuing professional practice. Just about every Professional Body concerned with therapy emphasizes the importance of supervision and\, typically\, specifies that its members must engage in it under regular and ongoing approved conditions. Although existential therapy is no different in that its members adhere to these governances\, the very concept of supervision\, and in particular what its meaning and purpose might be understood to be\, has remained an ongoing source of debate. \n\n\n\nIn many ways\, the issues surrounding supervision have provided existential therapists with a focus through which to address the wider debate as to what constitutes and defines existential therapy and what may be distinctive about its practice. \n\n\n\nThis workshop explores what is distinctive about an existential approach to supervision. In attempting to do so\, it will address several key aspects in the practice of existential therapy that can be transposed to supervision from an existential therapy perspective. As well as lecture and discussion\, participants will have opportunity to take part in a live demonstration of this approach to supervision. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis (SEA) between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings\, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy\, psychology\, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. In 1999\, Ernesto was awarded a Personal Chair as Professor of psychotherapy\, counselling and counselling psychology. In 2000\, he was the Recipient of BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. And in 2019\, Ernesto received the BPS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Practice. His most recent book\, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World\, 2nd edition (Sage\, 2015) has been widely praised as a major contribution to the advancement of existential theory and practice. His previous books include: The Interpreted World: an introduction to phenomenological psychology\, 2nd ed (Sage\, 2005); Demystifying Therapy (PCCS\, 2006); Tales of Un-knowing (PCCS\, 2006); and The Mirror and The Hammer: challenging therapeutic orthodoxies (Sage\, 2001). Living up to the existential dictum that life is absurd\, Ernesto is also the author of an on-going series of Private Eye novels\, the third of which\, Everything Has A Price\, was published in 2023. \n\n\n\nPlease contact EHNW about this event here via their contact form.

SUMMARY:EHNW Lunch-n-Learn: "Future Minds: A Tapestry of Existentialism and Mental Well-being in the Age of AI"
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Christy Hey\, LPC & Arnaud Verstuyf \n\n\n\nIn-Person & Virtual Hybrid Event:  Live True Counseling 333 SW Taylor Street\, Suite 200 Portland\, OR 97204 and via Zoom \n\n\n\nThe advent of artificial intelligence (AI) brings both promise and peril to the core tenets of existential humanism. While AI has the potential to enhance individual freedom\, automate mundane tasks\, and contribute to a more interconnected society\, concerns arise regarding privacy\, autonomy\, and the erosion of personal responsibility. The collaboration between humans and AI may lead to meaningful synergies or\, if mishandled\, to a sense of alienation. Ethical considerations in mental health practices\, existential anxieties\, and the cultural shifts driven by AI further complicate the relationship between providers and clients. Navigating these complexities requires a careful balance between technological progress and the preservation of existing values and methodologies. In this presentation\, Arnaud will give a basic overview of AI history and where it might be heading; Christy will discuss the current and potential uses and ethical concerns in the field of mental health. \n\n\n\nBefore the ‘Lunch & Learn’\, we recommend watching\, or re-watching\, the movie “Her” from 2013 as a potential – but positive – example of humanity’s relationship with evolving artificial intelligence. \n\n\n\nBios (two speakers): \n\n\n\nChristy Hey\, LPC\, started her career in St. Louis\, Missouri\, as a music therapist working with young people with developmental disabilities and mental health diagnoses. Upon arriving in Oregon in 2009\, she worked at the Oregon State Hospital then Chemawa Indian School before starting her private practice in 2019. Her current practice as a therapist and coach primarily supports neurodivergent adults\, who are often exploring their relationship with social and technological worlds. Through her emerging identity as a digital nomad\, her interests lie at the intersection of culture\, mental health and technology\, traveling and working abroad as much as possible with Arnaud and their two dogs\, Otter and Ellie. \n\n\n\nArnaud Verstuyf’s varied career is marked by both public service and private sector success. He began his professional journey in the private sector\, supporting small businesses\, while pursuing and obtaining a Software Engineering degree from KU Leuven\, Belgium. Following that\, he moved into public service\, providing technological expertise on a pilot project for cultural communication. The next challenge taken was as a consultant\, offering the opportunity to navigate many large companies dealing with supply chain management and production. After meeting and subsequently marrying Christy\, he moved to another continent\, on a journey of personal flexibility while exploring his own community and business ventures. \n\n\n\nPlease contact EHNW about this event here via their contact form.

And yet\, his contributions and influence remain woefully under-appreciated. This conference\, unprecedented in the annals of both psychoanalysis and existential-humanistic psychology\, will re-introduce the legacy\, focus\, and implications of Rank’s genius for a new generation of depth psychologists and psychotherapists.  \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOtto Rank (1884 – 1939) had a highly productive life as a lecturer\, therapist and writer and his work had great influence on many notable figures. Chief among them include the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan\, the client-centered psychotherapist Carl Rogers\, the existential psychoanalyst Rollo May\, the existential therapist Irvin Yalom\, and the cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker. It was his profound influence on May and Rogers in particular that gave birth to existential-humanistic psychology in the U.S. \n\n\n\n\n\nOtto Rank with Spooky\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecifically\, this conference will highlight Rank’s revolutionary contributions primarily in the following areas: \n\n\n\n\nHis move away from an emphasis on the interpretive prowess of the “expert” clinician to a focus on the experiential world of the client and the central healing role of the relationship between the therapist and the client\n\n\n\nHis prioritization of the relevance and significance of the “here and now” experience of the client in the therapeutic encounter\, inclusive of how the client’s psycho-developmental history organically shows up in the “here and now” of therapy – and how that individual developmental trajectory is affected by societal developmental processes\n\n\n\nHis focus on the central role that one’s relationship to existence plays in one’s psychological health and growth\, and its importance beyond biological drives and correlated cognitive structures and functions\n\n\n\nHis influence in spotlighting the essential roles that the experience of birth and the shadow of impermanence play in confronting and making sense of one’s existence\n\n\n\nHis emphases on creativity\, artistry\, will and authenticity in psychological health and growth\n\n\n\nHis consideration and exploration of mystical and spiritual influences in psychological and psycho-social development and healing\n\n\n\n\nToday\, many therapists inherently take for granted and employ truths Rank espoused in differentiating himself from many of the relevant theories\, theorists and trends of his day. Join us for an immersion into the ubiquitous underlying influence of Otto Rank\, particularly as it relates to contemporary depth psychotherapy and existential\, humanistic and psychodynamic psychology. This groundbreaking conference features eight speakers representing a wide range of perspectives on Rank: \n\n\n\nDAY ONE PRESENTATIONS \n\n\n\nRobert KramerOtto Rank and the Creation of Modern PsychotherapyIn 2023 millions of mental health professionals practice therapy worldwide. Almost all of them are following in the footsteps of Rank\, the first psychoanalyst to assert that the quality of the relationship\, not an interpretation\, is the healing factor in psychotherapy. If the 20th century was the century of Freud\, the 21st is shaping up to be that of Rank\, the “brooding genius waiting in the wings\,” as Irvin Yalom calls him.  \n\n\n\nLudwig JanusOtto Rank as PsychohistorianRank showed that the primal preverbal experiences from the beginning of our individual life is present in our adult experience\, but he also showed that this is the case as well in the collective mentalities in history manifest as magic\, mythical and religious experience. In this sense he understood the history of humankind as a process of internalization of earlier reenacted primordial experiences in the societal life. He was the first one who could reflect these facts of human condition. This laid the foundations of psychohistory. \n\n\n\nEllen Handler SpitzOtto Rank on Art\, Artists\, and Creative ProcessOtto Rank\, at the age of 23\, shyly introduced himself to Freud with an essay titled “The Artist.” Rank went on densely\, albeit with remarkable acuity\, authenticity\, and originality to explore the theme of artistic creativity\, specifically\, the mental processes of working artists. He lays bare the dynamics of artists’ inner conflicts\, which arise not only during but often at the anguished beginnings and endings of work. Rank frames these as struggles over birth and death\, and he explores bonds and ruptures between artists’ past and present work\, both their own and that of others. He writes of inspiration and of the role of the muse. This presentation spotlights a selection of nuggets from Rank’s contributions to this field of inquiry. \n\n\n\nMarie Helen BeckerHeavenly EscapeThis presentation is based on Otto Rank’s discussion of the origins of the soul and religion in ART AND ARTIST (1932). Problematic to all humans from primitive to contemporary cultures is the wonder at our physical impermanence and the ensuing desire to defeat transience. Even though the subject of soul is no longer ascribed the popular attention it once was\, the presenter will use her own artwork as an example of her process of rendering an art history of the soul. \n\n\n\nDAY TWO PRESENTATIONS \n\n\n\nMatthew FoxOtto Rank as a ‘new personality type’ Calling for the Unio Mystica: a Reunion of Psyche and CosmosRank observed that “new personality types are created during social and spiritual crises of religious\, political or economic origin.”  Was Rank himself such a new personality type?  In this presentation we will explore Otto Rank’s teachings on the “Unio Mystica\,” (his words) including the role of love and art\, the more-than-rational\, the seeking for a “beyond\,” letting go\, being present to the “Now\,” and creating.  His prophetic role includes moving beyond patriarchy\, “beyond Freud\,” (his words) and Freudian psychology\, beyond the one-sidedly rational and modern consciousness therefore. \n\n\n\nSara EkenstiernaProblems of the Beyond: Exploring Holistic Thought Through Otto Rank and David Bohm The presenter’s own research offers a revision of current positivist understandings of self and wellbeing in mainstream therapeutic psychology\, by elaborating on Otto Rank’s existential-psychodynamic philosophy of the psyche. The particular focus of this presentation is on Rank’s recognition of holistic and co-creative notions of selfhood as essential properties of human existence\, and on how these approaches can further advance contemporary psychotherapeutic practices of the self.  \n\n\n\nSiebrecht VanhoorenTherapy is the Place to BeOne of the many revolutionary ideas Rank launched is that not only the client’s sufferings and joys can be understood in terms of existence. The process of therapy itself is the place and time where we – client and therapist – meet our nothingness\, something-ness and everything-ness: our life and death. The consequences of this vision are far-reaching. Can I\, as a therapist\, be alive and live with my client at this very moment? Can I attune to the existential process I am a part of\, listen to my own ever-changing voice\, and allow myself and my client to be? \n\n\n\nKirk SchneiderRecasting Psychoanalysis in Existential Terms: The Lasting Legacy of Otto RankOtto Rank reframed psychoanalysis in terms of our relation to existence\, beyond and inclusive of our relationship to our biology\, our cognition\, and even ourselves. Rank also delved deeply into the experience of that relationship\, inclusive of our fears\, our sorrows\, and our exuberances—as well as our “here-now” embodiment of such sensibilities. In this light\, and in the light of Robert Kramer’s research on Rank’s impact on both Carl Rogers and Rollo May\, Rank can justifiably be called the founding figure of both existential-humanistic and existential-integrative psychology. In this talk\, Dr. Schneider will describe how prophetic Rank’s reformulation of psychoanalysis has proven to be\, and how vital it is not only for Western psychologies\, but for contemporary industrialized societies as a whole. To elucidate this foundation-shaking thesis for our times\, Dr. Schneider will touch on some of his own work on existential-integrative therapy\, life-enhancing anxiety\, and the cultivation of the sense of awe toward living. \n\n\n\nEach presentation will be followed by interactive small group discussion! \n\n\n\n\nEach day will feature 4 presentation segments and each segment will be divided into 2 sections: the presenter’s delivery of their presentation to the large group followed by everyone being moved into breakout rooms for small group discussion of the presentation.\n\n\n\nEach small group will be co-led by one of the conference presenters and participants will remain in the same small group throughout the 2 days.\n\n\n\nEach day will end with approximately 35 minutes of large group Q & A.\n\n\n\n\nConference registration will be limited to a maximum number of total participants in order to best support opportunities for engagement in the small groups. \n\n\n\nPresenter Bios\n\n\n\nRobert Kramer\, PhD\, was Visiting Professor of Psychology at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest\, where he taught existential-humanistic psychotherapy. During Spring 2022\, he was Professor of Psychoanalysis at ELTE\, only the second person in Hungary to hold this title. The first was Sándor Ferenczi. \n\n\n\nDuring academic year 2015-16\, he was the inaugural International Chair of Public Leadership at the Budapest National University of Public Service. In 2016 he resigned his Chair in protest against the corruption of the Orbán regime. He’s now designing a Rankian leader development program for the Democracy Institute of Central European University in Budapest. The program will address the needs of national and local leaders; politicians; policy experts in public administration and think-tanks; and civil society activists who are working to promote democratic change in Central and Eastern Europe. \n\n\n\nHe has published in The Los Angeles Review of Books\, The Times of Israel (Tel Aviv)\, and The New European (London). He edited and introduced Otto Rank’s A Psychology of Difference: The American Lectures (Princeton University Press\, 1996) and co-edited\, with E. J. Lieberman\, The Letters of Sigmund Freud and Otto Rank: Inside Psychoanalysis (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 2012). In 2022 he published The Birth of Relationship Therapy: Carl Rogers Meets Otto Rank (Psychosozial Press). In 2023 he will publish Otto Rank: A Dream That Interprets Itself with Phoenix Books (U.K.). His next book\, to be published by Oxford University Press in 2024\, is entitled\, Otto Rank and the Creation of Modern Psychotherapy. \n\n\n\nLudwig Janus\, M.D.\, grew up in Essen\, Germany\, and has been a practising psychoanalytic psychotherapist in Dossenheim near Heidelberg since 1975. He is the Past-President of the International Society for Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Medicine (ISPPM) (www.isppm.de)\, Past-President of the German Society for Psychohistory and Political Psychology (www.psychohistorie.de)\, and current head of the “Institute for Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Medicine” (www.praenatalpschologie.de). He is the author of numerous publications on prenatal and perinatal psychology and on psychohistory (www.Ludwig-Janus.de)\, and is co-editor of the International Journal of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Medicine. published by Mattes Verlag\, Heidelberg\, 1989-2012. \n\n\n\nEllen Handler Spitz\, PhD\, is Senior Lecturer in Humanities at Yale University. She writes\, lectures\, and teaches in the fields of art and psychology\, literature\, and aesthetics. Her books include:  Art and Psyche; Image and Insight; Museums of the Mind; Inside Picture Books; The Brightening Glance; Illuminating Childhood; and Magritte’s Labyrinth. She is on the editorial board of American Imago and a fellow of the New York Institute for the Humanities. Her work has appeared in The New Republic\, The New York Times\, The Los Angeles Review of Books\, The Baltimore Sun\, Artcritical\, and other popular venues as well as in numerous scholarly and psychoanalytic publications\, including The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child. \n\n\n\nMarie Helen Becker\, M.Ed.\, DFA\, grew up in St. James on Long Island\, New York. Her early childhood experiences created a determination to pursue an education that would explain and illuminate the roots of baffling\, inauthentic\, and sometimes destructive behaviors of select adults. She sought freedom from the burdens of this unwanted legacy. \n\n\n\nWhile attending Syracuse University\, Marie received a diverse liberal education in a wide array of social sciences such as anthropology\, psychology\, political science\, and philosophy. These all provided much learning but did little to bring enlightenment. Syracuse’s Early Childhood Education program\, with its grounding philosophy of John Dewey charting creative\, democratic classrooms\, helped settle the quest. \n\n\n\nThe distractions of love\, marriage\, children — and several physical moves\, the last one to British Columbia\, Canada — closed the window on work opportunities for some time. 1974 was a year of reworking and editing the rejected manuscript Marxism and Psychoanalysis\, which eventually became Escape from Evil. \n\n\n\nA degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia helped enrich a new career working as a liaison between children\, teachers\, and parents in classrooms from Vancouver\, British Columbia to Owen Sound\, Ontario. Private practice and a career in painting followed and continue to this day. \n\n\n\nMatthew Fox is a spiritual theologian committed to bringing alive the non-dualist spiritual tradition of creation spirituality. He is author of 39 books on spirituality and culture including Original Blessing; The Reinvention of Work; Creativity: Where the Divine and Human Meet; Meister Eckhart: A Mystic-Warrior for Our Times and The Coming of the Cosmic Christ. He considers Otto Rank to be a contemporary mystic and prophet and has written a number of articles on him and taught many classes on him (including one with Robert Kramer).  He founded the University of Creation Spirituality\, is an Episcopal priest\, and a visiting scholar at the Academy of the Love of Learning. \n\n\n\nSara Ekenstierna is founder of Ekenstierna Psykologkonsult and Oakstar Coaching & Consulting. She was educated at Lund University in Sweden and at University of Victoria in British Columbia\, Canada\, and is currently a PhD research candidate at the University of Queensland\, Austraila. Sara is a licensed psychologist (Sweden) and has fifteen years’ worth of experience in the field\, spanning private practice\, psychiatry and organizational psychology. Her research topics include health and wellbeing\, authentic living\, self-actualization\, and she is specifically interested in holistic thought\, metaphysics\, existential-integrative perspectives including humanistic psychodynamic theory\, and quantum existentialism. Sara focuses on evidence-treatments\, predominantly STDP (short term psychodynamic therapy)\, and is also familiar with Existential-Integrative Therapy\, ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy); and Mindfulness-based Psychotherapy. Sara is a published writer. She was a columnist for the popular Swedish professional magazine Psykologtidningen.  \n\n\n\nSiebrecht Vanhooren\, PhD\, is professor of clinical psychology at KU Leuven (Belgium). He teaches counseling\, person-centered\, experiential\, and existential psychotherapy and is the director of the person-centered therapy training programs and the existential well-being counseling program at KU Leuven. He is the co-director of KU Leuven’s Meaning & Existence research center and a committee member of The Eugene T. Gendlin Center for Research in Experiential Philosophy and Psychology. He enjoys living\, spending time with his family and friends\, long hikes\, and tries to get a good sound out of his saxophone. \n\n\n\nKirk Schneider\, PhD\, is a licensed psychologist and leading spokesperson for contemporary existential-humanistic and existential-integrative psychology. Dr. Schneider is co-founder and current president of the Existential-Humanistic Institute (EHI)\, a Council Member of the American Psychological Association (APA)\, an adjunct faculty member at Saybrook University and Teachers College\, Columbia University\, past president of the Society for Humanistic Psychology (Division 32 of the APA)\, past editor of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology\, and a Member of the Steering Committee of the Psychotherapy Action Network (PsiAN). \n\n\n\nA Fellow of 7 Divisions of the APA\, Dr. Schneider has published over 200 articles\, interviews and chapters and has authored or edited 14 books\, including The Spirituality of Awe\, The Polarized Mind\, Awakening to Awe\, The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology\, Existential-Humanistic Therapy\, Existential-Integrative Psychotherapy\, The Wiley World Handbook of Existential Therapy\, The Depolarizing of America and his most recent\, Life-Enhancing Anxiety: Key to a Sane World. Dr. Schneider’s work has been featured in Scientific American\, The New York Times\, Psychology Today and many other health and psychology outlets. \n\n\n\nIntroductory Video on Otto Rank \n\n\n\nArash Farzaneh\, Arash’s World Podcast\, talks with Robert Kramer and Kirk Schneider\, two of the organizers who are also some of the upcoming speakers for the long-awaited and fascinating Otto Rank International Conference. Arash\, Robert and Kirk talk about the amazing work and wonderful and profound insights provided by Otto Rank\, whom theologian Mathew Fox considers a “saint” and who has left a long-lasting legacy\, influence\, and mark upon various fields and disciplines across time and space. Rank’s ideas are still valid\, pertinent\, and relevant today and\, in fact\, more so than ever. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Continuing Education Information\n\n\n\n*Continuing Education: EHI is approved for 8 hours of CEs for psychologists (see note below**) through Division 32 of the American Psychological Association\, The Society of Humanistic Psychology. We will examine the presence of microaggressions which include verbal\, behavioral\, and environmental indignities\, whether intentional or unintentional\, which communicate hostile\, derogatory\, or negative racial\, gender\, sexual orientation\, and religious slights and insults which target a person or group. Because of the great diversity among clients in psychotherapy\, we are focusing this workshop on importance of cultural empathy. We will examine the historical issue of slavery and its relevance to today’s racial tensions\, including historical trauma and the long-term effects of slavery. Finally\, we will examine poetry’s contribution to understanding those of diverse backgrounds. \n\n\n\nDr Nathaniel Granger\, Jr\n\n\n\n\nNathaniel Granger\, Jr\, PsyD\, is a licensed minister\, certified DEIB specialist\, practicing psychotherapist\, author & poet\, transformational speaker\, and executive coach.
