SUMMARY:EHNW's March Online Lunch n Learn
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on Process is Key to Effective Existential-Humanistic Therapy\n\n\n\nPresented by: Bob Edelstein\, LMFT\n\n\n\nDate: Friday\, March 20th\, 2026Time: 1 pm–2:30 pm Pacific TimeFee: $0-20  \n\n\n\nOnline: via ZoomHost: Our Friends at Existential-Humanistic Northwest (EHNW) in Portland\, OR \n\n\n\nProcess is how the client expresses themselves in a session. This reveals how the client lives in the present moment. Through focusing on the client’s process\, the client can expand and modify their present identity to discover more of who they are and who they want to become. This is fundamental to effective Existential-Humanistic therapy. \n\n\n\nThrough lecture\, demonstration\, and Q&A\, participants will gain an understanding of the importance of focusing on intrapsychic and interpersonal processes and see how they can apply working with process with their clients. \n\n\n\nAbout the PresenterBob Edelstein\, LMFT\, is an Existential-Humanistic psychotherapist with over fifty years of experience. SUMMARY:EHI Salon: The Many Faces of Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Developed & Facilitated by: Sonja Saltman\, EHI Core Instructor and Joshua Diliberto\, EHI Teaching Assistant \n\n\n\nDate: Thursday\, February 26\, 2026 \n\n\n\nTime: 11 am – 1 pm Pacific Time (2pm-4 pm ET; 7pm-9pm UTC) \n\n\n\nOnline: via Zoom. Link access is sent via your registration email. \n\n\n\nFormat: Group Discussion\, demonstration\, small group\, or dyad engagement. This is not intended to teach specific skills like our Core Skills workshop\, but there will be exposure to E-H skills used in the demos. \n\n\n\nCameras On Salon: We offer experiential humanistic engagement and ask that people who enroll attend with their cameras on. You do not have to engage\, but we do ask you to have your camera on. \n\n\n\nFee: $25. We do not want a lack of funds to be an issue to your engagement. Please reach out to Michelle via program@ehinstitute.org to get a code for a $10 economic inequality or hardship registration. For anyone\, no judgment. Michelle will assist you! \n\n\n\nContinuing the Experiential Salons\n\n\n\nOn February 26\, EHI is hosting a two-hour virtual community space for exploring The Many Faces of Resistance. We will spend the initial hour identifying the types of resistance and then demonstrate how to work with one or two of them\, if anybody has an example they want to bring to us. There will be a group discussion\, a practical demonstration\, and we will stay flexible to follow emergent wishes from the group. \n\n\n\nEHI is excited to continue the series of experiential salons into the new year. The intention for these salons is to honor EHI’s commitment to experiential learning as well as the time-honored group process of discussion and integration. \n\n\n\nAs we acknowledge that the word “salon” implies a more free-flowing structure this is a flexible outline that will be modified by Sonja and Josh to work with what is happening in the moment. \n\n\n\nConceptual frames for our topic\, “The Many Faces of Resistance .”Sonja and Josh offer conceptual definitions:We use energy to make good contact with our environment. Without obstacles\, this energetic effort results in positive outcomes. However\, if this effort does not get the desired returns\, we end up with a list of negative feelings\, anger\, confusion\, resentment\, disappointment\, etc. \n\n\n\nThere are five major channels of resistant interactions: \n\n\n\n\nIntrojection: Passively and indiscriminately absorbing the environment without explaining one’s preference.\n\n\n\nProjecting: Disowning parts of self and ascribing it to the other or the environment.\n\n\n\nRetroflection: Disowning parts of the environment by becoming a separate unit\, investing energy back to an intrapersonal system.\n\n\n\nDeflecting: Investing energy without focus\, getting little in return.\n\n\n\nConfluence: Means yielding energy to the environmental trend that carries little personal expenditure.\n\n\n\n\nThe identification of the various faces of resistance is the pathway to working with these resistances to restore good contact with the environment in which we live. In other words\, these various types of resistance are for the therapist to utilize with our clients to tap into the many distressing feelings evoked when the client does not have unimpeded access to what he/she wants\, such as anger\, confusion\, resentment\, disappointment\, etc. These feelings\, expressed in resistance\, reduce the possibilities of productive contactual interactions with the environment and express the powerlessness over the outcome of these interactions. Being fully present to these ways of avoiding the negative feelings when we are not getting what we want can restore ownership of these feelings without having to resist them. Awareness\, acknowledgment\, experiential exercises\, and acceptance can begin the necessary healing process. \n\n\n\nFor a little more background on resistance in E-H therapy\, Scott Gibbs has written two companion articles for this salon in our blog series\, The Existential Moment\, entitled “Why “Resistance” Matters—The Existential Cost and the Therapeutic Aim” and Working With Resistance. \n\n\n\nGeneral Outline (2 hours): \n\n\n\n\nWelcome and Introductions\n\n\n\nIntroducing The Many Faces of Resistance\n\n\n\nAttendees are invited to share their own perspective.\n\n\n\nDemo — We may ask for a volunteer “client” for a demo. Guiding the client to the inevitable next moment\, which can then unfold freely.\n\n\n\nExperiential Dyad Exercise\, or Deepened Group Discussion: We will decide in the moment as a group\n\n\n\nFinal Large Group Process\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWho is This Event For?Anyone with a foundation in clinical work or completing hours. MFTs\, social workers\, counselors\, psychologists\, psychiatrists\, nurse practitioners\, doctors\, Master’s or Doctoral students in internships\, and pre-licensed therapeutic professionals are all encouraged to attend! International practitioners are very welcome! \n\n\n\nWe always hope to create an intimate and safe space. Please do not enroll if you will not be able to attend the live event with your camera on. Naturally\, we understand withdrawals will sometimes need to happen. \n\n\n\nRecording? To encourage deeper engagement\, this event will not be recorded. \n\n\n\nSalon Host: Existential-Humanistic Institute (EHI) offers trainings\, workshops and education in Existential-Humanistic approaches to psychotherapy. Formed in 1997\, EHI continues to offer experiential training retreats\, certificate programs\, workshops\, consultation groups\, theory courses and community gatherings in the Bay Area with the goal of supporting existentially and humanistically informed psychologies and psychotherapies: approaches that focus on and nurture subjective experiential reflection of life’s deepest joys and predicaments. \n\n\n\nWaiverThere is a required waiver for attending and participating in this salon due to both the topic and the format. This salon in general\, and the break-out groups in particular\, will include experiential exercises that might be more likely to evoke emotional – including difficult emotional – reactions than just presentational techniques. \n\n\n\nFrequently Asked QuestionsHow do I get my Zoom link? Your Zoom link is included in your Registration Confirmation email that will arrive within minutes of your registration- please be sure to put in your correct email address!

SUMMARY:EHNW Workshop - Supervision: An Existential Therapy Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Supervision: An Existential Therapy Perspective\n\n\n\nKeynote Speaker: Professor Ernesto Spinelli\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\nCost: $29 – $69 \n\n\n\nOnline via Zoom \n\n\n\nThis workshop explores what is distinctive about an existential approach to supervision\, including lecture\, discussion\, and live demos. \n\n\n\nThe supervision of therapists by their colleagues has become one of the primary requirements for continuing professional practice. Just about every Professional Body concerned with therapy emphasizes the importance of supervision and\, typically\, specifies that its members must engage in it under regular and ongoing approved conditions. Although existential therapy is no different in that its members adhere to these governances\, the very concept of supervision\, and in particular what its meaning and purpose might be understood to be\, has remained an ongoing source of debate. \n\n\n\nIn many ways\, the issues surrounding supervision have provided existential therapists with a focus through which to address the wider debate as to what constitutes and defines existential therapy and what may be distinctive about its practice. \n\n\n\nThis workshop explores what is distinctive about an existential approach to supervision. In attempting to do so\, it will address several key aspects in the practice of existential therapy that can be transposed to supervision from an existential therapy perspective. As well as lecture and discussion\, participants will have opportunity to take part in a live demonstration of this approach to supervision. \n\n\n\n\n3 CE’s (PENDING) are available from NASW. CE’s for this workshop cost $20 to handle the administrative fees and labor. See the Q&A below for more information.\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Facilitator: \n\n\n\nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings\, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy\, psychology\, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. \n\n\n\nIn 1999\, Ernesto was awarded a Personal Chair as Professor of Psychotherapy\, Counselling and Counselling Psychology. In 2000\, he was the Recipient of the BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. And in 2019\, Ernesto received the BPS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Practice. His most recent therapy book\, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World 2nd edition (Sage\, 2015) has been widely praised as a major contribution to the advancement of existential theory and practice. His previous books include: The Interpreted World: an introduction to phenomenological psychology\, 2nd ed. (Sage\, 2005); Demystifying Therapy (PCCS\, 2006); Tales of Un-Knowing (PCCS\, 2006); and The Mirror and The Hammer: Challenging therapeutic orthodoxies (Sage\, 2001). \n\n\n\nLiving up to the existential dictum that life is absurd\, Ernesto is also the author of an on-going series of Private Eye novels. His most recent standalone novel\, Moments – A Greek Island Tale\, will be published in 2025. \n\n\n\nPlease Note this workshop is hosted by Existential-Humanistic Northwest\, EHNW in Portland\, not EHI. SUMMARY:EHNW's December Lunch and Learn
DESCRIPTION:Everyday Moments That Matter: Bringing Love and Meaning Back into Therapy \n\n\n\nFacilitated by Justin Rock\, LMFT\, LPCOnline via ZoomHost: EHNW (www.ehnwpdx.org)Cost: $0 – $20What if the most important moments in therapy are the ones that never make it into the notes? \n\n\n\nIn this Lunch and Learn\, Justin invites attendees to slow down and rediscover the ethical and transformative power of everyday moments that matter. Together\, participants will explore how existential love\, understood not as emotion but as a way of being with\, calls us into deeper responsibility\, presence\, and care. \n\n\n\nJustin will also invite participants to notice how they experience time in their work\, the difference between the clock time of our profession and the living time that opens when connection deepens. These shifts in time can guide both clinical practice and renewal in our own lives. \n\n\n\nThrough story\, reflection\, and brief experiential exercises\, participants will attend to the subtle hauntings that accompany our work: the clients who linger\, the futures we hope for\, and the love that quietly shapes everything we do and the world we live in. \n\n\n\nCome ready to pause\, reflect\, and reconnect with the living heart of therapy. Our world could use it. About the facilitator:Justin W. Rock\, LMFT\, LPC\, is a therapist\, AAMFT-approved supervisor\, educator\, and writer\, grounded in existential-humanistic and relational-ontological practice. He teaches in the Marriage\, Couple\, and Family Therapy and Art Therapy programs at Lewis & Clark College and maintains a private practice in Portland\, Oregon.Justin’s work explores ontological haunting\, kairos\, and existential love as ways of understanding presence and responsibility in both leadership and therapy. He is a past president of Existential-Humanistic Northwest (EHNW) and a doctoral student at Antioch University\, where his research examines knowledge generation\, epistemological justice\, and phenomenology as they shape relational healing and the tension between liberation and oppression. \n\n\n\nThis event is being hosted by our friends at Existential-Humanistic Northwest. For any questions\, contact EHNW at: event-host@ehnwpdx.org .with any questions. \n\n\n\nEHNW Vision Statement: Existential-Humanistic NorthWest is here to impact the world through our commitment to and passion for existential-humanistic values of authenticity\, integrity\, responsibility\, inter-connectedness\, inclusion\, and awe.

SUMMARY:Salon: The Path to Being in Contact With Others
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by: Sonja Saltman\, MFT – EHI Core Instructor\, and Joshua Diliberto\, LCHC\, NCC\, RYT- EHI Teaching Assistant\n\n\n\nLocation: Online Via Zoom \n\n\n\nHost: Existential-Humanistic Institute (EHI) \n\n\n\nRegistration: https://ehi.ticketspice.com/the-path-to-being-in-contact-with-others \n\n\n\nRegistration fee: $25 for General tickets. To promote effective discussion\, we are limiting registration to 30 people. We do not want cost to be an issue. We offer economic inequality/hardship tickets for $10. Please contact Michelle via our contact form to get a code for this ticket level. \n\n\n\nOn December 2nd\, EHI is hosting a two-hour virtual community space for exploring “The Path to Being in Contact with Others.” Personal\, relational\, and cosmological aspects are considered in group discussion\, practical demonstration\, possible dyad or small group engagement—we will be flexible to follow emergent wishes from the group. \n\n\n\nWe are excited to be continuing the series of experiential salons and to hold one more before the end of the year. The intention for these salons is to honor EHI’s commitment to experiential learning as well as the time honored group process of discussion and integration. \n\n\n\nGeneral Outline (2 hours):  \n\n\n\n● Welcome and Introductions \n\n\n\n● Conceptual frames for “The Path to Being in Contact with Others”:   Contact is vitalizing. Contactful experiences center around our senses and involve being touched. Seeing is being touched by light waves\, hearing happens via sound waves\, smelling and tasting is being touched by various substances. Talking and moving are also ways to create contact. Once contact has been fully established through one of these functions\, a sense of full engagement is the result. In contrast\, diminished contact can be the result of personal distancing such as inertia\, disinterest\, environmental hindrances\, or psychological overload causing distress. For example\, looking away to lessen the impact of potentially impactful experiences. A person can also selectively choose what to say or hear and ignore listening to more than just the words. \n\n\n\n● Attendees are invited to share their own perspective \n\n\n\n● Demo \n\n\n\n● Experiential Dyad Exercise or Deepened Group Discussion: We will decide in the moment as a group \n\n\n\n● Final Large Group Process \n\n\n\n As we acknowledge that the word “salon” implies a more free flowing structure this is a flexible outline that will be modified by Sonja andJosh to work with what is happening in the moment for the group.

Smith\, MA\, LMHCA\n\n\n\nDate: Saturday November 15\, 2025Time: 10am–12pm Pacific TimeFee: $20 for non-affiliates. $15 for students. $0 for EHNW affiliates \n\n\n\nOnline: via ZoomHost: Existential-Humanistic Northwest (EHNW) \n\n\n\nIf you’re a student or professional in the helping field\, chances are this question brings up some amount of anxiety in you. In a world run by insurance and the managed care framework\, we are primarily taught that the measure of helping clients lies in results. Did the client’s depression improve? Is the client maintaining sobriety? Have you achieved their initial goals?  \n\n\n\nIn this salon designed for those old and new to the field\, we’ll have a collective conversation about this and alternative understandings of what it means to actually “help” someone. Through an Existential-Humanistic framework\, we will consider aspects of helping that expand on and diverge from the dominant managed care model. These may include emphases on the values of presence\, process\, and the dialogical. In sum\, perhaps we will find that “help” is more complex and relationship-oriented than reductionistic and results-oriented.  \n\n\n\nAbout the FacilitatorsClare Knudsen is a student in Western Seminary’s CACREP-accredited master’s program in clinical mental health counseling\, currently interning at Charis Counseling in Vancouver\, WA. She received additional training in Existential-Humanistic psychotherapy core skills from the Existential-Humanistic Institute (EHI) and joined the board of EHNW in 2024. As a counselor and human\, she believes in the power of presence and safe connection. Outside of counseling\, she enjoys gardening\, spending time with people\, playing on the pottery wheel\, and learning new things.  \n\n\n\nSara J. Smith\, approaches therapy from an Existential-Humanistic framework\, emphasizing authenticity\, presence\, and meaning-making in the therapeutic relationship. Drawing from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)\, experiential methods\, and relational approaches\, Sara tailors therapy to each person with respect for their lived experience. With a background in Community Mental Health\, Sara is committed to social justice\, cultural humility\, and honoring the inherent worth of every individual. Outside of work\, Sara enjoys creative writing\, TTRPGs\, spending time with friends and family\, and engaging in a variety of creative activities. Sara holds an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from George Fox University. The E-H approach is based on core ways of being and working with clients that help facilitate greater awareness\, greater sense of choice\, increased agency and adaptiveness and a deeper connection to self and others – all in the service of healing and growing. There are core capacities and skills an E-H therapist uses to help clients effectively explore and work through their existential predicaments so they can more fully access what deeply matters to them. \n\n\n\n Topics covered include: \n\n\n\n\nThe cultivation of presence as both the ground of therapy and one of its primary objectives\n\n\n\nThe focus on the “living moment” in working with the “here-and-now” experience of clients – staying with what presents itself phenomenologically rather than employing theoretical interventions\n\n\n\nThe differentiation between primary\, direct experience and secondary\, interpretive experience – and the emphasis on working with phenomenological experience\n\n\n\nThe meaning-making process and the formation of the Self-and-World Construct – helping client and therapist understand identity construction and de-construction\n\n\n\nHow to work with the client’s ways of being in the world and how to utilize the therapist-client relationship to help shift unhelpful ways of being\n\n\n\nHow to identify and work through clients’ inner battles in order to support their longings to emerge\, and feel more choice-ful and psychospiritually whole\n\n\n\nIntegrating and embodying your theoretical beliefs and authentic sense of self in your work as a therapist\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWho is this training for? \n\n\n\nThis training is ideal for those who have not yet had any intensive training in E-H therapy and does not require any didactic preparation. The workshop is also an excellent refresher for those who have had prior training and are seeking reinforcement of what they’ve learned. \n\n\n\nAm I eligible as a practitioner? \n\n\n\nWe offer this to licensed and pre/licensed professionals who work in clinical therapeutic settings\, no matter the modality. SUMMARY:EHNW Fall Workshop: Kirk Schneider "Awakening Life-Enhancing Anxiety in our Profession and World: An Existential-Depth Approach"
DESCRIPTION:Keynote Speaker: Kirk Schneider\, PhD \n\n\n\nHost: Existential-Humanistic Northwest (EHNW)Date/Time: Saturday\, October 4th\, 2025 | 9am-5pm Pacific Time Zone \n\n\n\nThis workshop will explore how anxiety is hitting the roof in our practices and world precisely because we so often fail to address the underlying or primal anxiety that fuels greater and more destructive anxiety. That which Kirk terms “life-enhancing anxiety\,” is a level of anxiety that enables us to live with and make the best of the depth and mystery of existence. Or to put it more concretely\, it fosters our capacity to live more on the edge of wonder and discovery rather than terror and overwhelm. \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Kirk will elaborate on the above and provide a series of exercises that can optimize our capacity for life-enhancing anxiety both in our practices and in the communities in which we live. He will also provide a demonstration of such optimization both at the level of therapy and bridge-building dialogue between people who are culturally or politically estranged from one another. Kirk will raise the huge problem of how to really “meet” each other and ourselves in the encounter with differences within ourselves and others\, and underscore “presence” as key.6 CEUs pendingHybrid EventVirtual via Zoom In-Person Location: George Fox University\, Portland\, OregonRegistration Options >>For further information contact Beth Swain at beth@ehnwpdx.org \n\n\n\nKirk J. SUMMARY:Salon: Our Life’s Narrative and Meaning Making
DESCRIPTION:With Sonja Saltman\, MFT – EHI Core Instructor\, and Joshua Diliberto\, LCHC\, NCC\, RYT- EHI Teaching Assistant\n\n\n\nDate/Time:  Tuesday\, August 26th\, 2025 at 11am-1pm Pacific | 2pm-4pm Eastern Location: Online Via Zoom Registration fee: $25 for General tickets. To promote effective discussion we are limiting registration to 30 people. We do not want cost to be an issue. We offer economic inequality/hardship tickets for $10. Please contact Michelle via the form to get a code for reduced ticket. Host: Existential-Humanistic Institute (EHI) \n\n\n\nOn August 26th\, EHI is hosting a two-hour virtual community space for exploring “Our Life’s Narrative and Meaning Making.” Personal\, relational\, and cosmological aspects are considered in group discussion\, practical demonstration\, possible dyad or small group engagement—we will be flexible to follow emergent wishes from the group. EHI is excited to be continuing the series of experiential salons and to hold one more before the EHI team takes their summer break. The intention for these salons is to honor EHI’s commitment to experiential learning as well as the time honored group process of discussion and integration. \n\n\n\nGeneral Outline (2 hours):  \n\n\n\n● Welcome Introduction and check-in  \n\n\n\n● Conceptual frames for Our Life’s Narrative and Meaning Making:  The concept of self calls for the person to transform the pronoun I into a recognition of essential qualities with which the person may be identified. Real self\, nuclear self\, narcissistic self and false self all refer to essential qualities of the person. They are representative of the person and this patterning process organizes personal characteristics into coherent clusters from which we form our inner sense of self. Based on this sense of inner self we form our “life stories”. They are the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves and that are sometimes small work of fictions we believe to be true. Any new experience then might be filtered through this belief about our coherent self\, might therefore be distorted.Meaning making can be the process of restructuring of the patterns of the self and thus confronting myths that were created by parts of ourselves. The person is invited to examine incoming new information without filtering it through already preexisting faulty assumptions to reemerge with a new sense of meaning for ourselves. \n\n\n\n● Demo on Our Life’s Narrative and Meaning Making  \n\n\n\n● Group Discussion\, Attendee/EHI Demo\, or Experiential Dyad Exercise: we will decide in the moment as a group \n\n\n\n● Final Large Group Process \n\n\n\n As we acknowledge that the word “salon” implies a more free flowing structure this is a flexible outline that will be modified by Sonja and Josh to work with what is happening in the moment.

As mental health professionals we are required to understand suicide risks and do our best to avert such events as adeptly as we can.I hold acute awareness that medical and mental health clinicians are human and have a very high incidence of suicide and suicide ideation\, as do first responders trained to intervene in grim and often ghastly situations: firefighters\, police\, and EMTs. When I talk with colleagues about the fact that our own and our colleagues’ suicide risks need to be a topic for suicide prevention education\, the sort of response I get is\, “I’ve never heard a presentation on clinicians’ suicide risk.” I’ve been stumbling toward the development of a 3-hour CE presentation on this topic for 3 years and hope to have it online in September 2025. In this brief lunch and learn presentation\, I will offer a smattering of data and some personal stories\, share assertions reflected upon in-depth\, and offer resources.I would like to engage with you in a discussion about medical and mental health clinicians’ suicide risks and self-care strategies\, as well as those of others working in this muddy\, hazardous space.” \n\n\n\nPresenter Bio\n\n\n\nMichaele Dunlap\, PsyD\, completed college at Reed\, earned a master’s in counseling at Lewis & Clark and a Psy.D. at Pacific University. An Existential value is that we are all Beings-in-the-World. We are not separate from what is going on. It impacts us regardless of whether we actively engage or not. How do we support our clients who are experiencing the effects of polarization\, suffering\, confusion\, and despair? How do we facilitate the exploration of these concerns? How do we deal with our own experience of the current political situation? How does it impact us as we seek to support our clients? \n\n\n\nBiosBob Edelstein\, LMFT\, MFT\, is an Existential-Humanistic psychotherapist with over fifty years of experience. He provides individual and couples therapy\, as well as consultation\, supervision\, workshops\, and trainings for clinicians and students. He is a blogger for Psychology Today and has published articles on the existential-humanistic perspective\, including a chapter entitled “Frames\, Attitudes\, and Skills of an Existential Humanistic Psychotherapist” in The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology\, 2nd Edition. He has presented multiple workshops on Existential-Humanistic Psychotherapy\, including presenting at both the 2nd and 3rd Existential Psychotherapy World Congresses. SUMMARY:EHI Salon: Transforming the Ordinary to the Remarkable

The intention for these salons is to honor EHI’s commitment to experiential learning as well as the time-honored group process of discussion and integration. \n\n\n\nOn April 15th\, EHI is hosting a two-hour virtual community space for Transforming the ordinary to the remarkable. Personal\, relational\, and cosmological aspects are considered in group discussion\, practical demonstration\, dyad engagement\, and will be flexible to follow emergent wishes from the group. \n\n\n\nGeneral Outline (2 hours):  \n\n\n\n● Welcome to 4th Salon: Transforming the ordinary to the remarkable (15 minutes) \n\n\n\n● Conceptual frames for Transforming the ordinary to the remarkable (20 minutes): Alertness to everyday experience creates the background for creating the aliveness necessary to appreciate aspects of life often minimized and ignored. Skipped over experiences can be valuable treasures for gaining self-knowledge. Simple events like a daily routine can escape notice\, events that give context and continuity to life. Understanding and highlighting breathes meaning into ordinary experiences. \n\n\n\n● Experiential Demo/Exercise: “Exploring the ordinary to the remarkable” (35 min)  \n\n\n\n● Dyads (30 min) \n\n\n\n● Final Large Group Process: (15 min) \n\n\n\n As we acknowledge that the word “salon” implies a more free flowing structure this is a flexible outline that will be modified by Sonja and Josh to work with what is happening in the moment.

SUMMARY:Recommended Lunch-n-Learn: So\, CBT & EH Walk Into a Bar…
DESCRIPTION:EHNW Lunch and Learn  \n\n\n\nSo\, CBT & EH Walk Into a Bar…\n\n\n\nFacilitated by: Kayla Birkeland\n\n\n\nDate: Friday\, 4/11/2025Time: 1pm–2:30pm Pacific Daylight Savings TimeFee: $20 General  \n\n\n\nOnline: via Zoom \n\n\n\nIn this Lunch & Learn\, Kayla will be taking the time to explore the proclivity towards an either/or mindset when it comes to how we approach work with clients and find our space in the world of theoretical orientations (especially early on). Specifically\, she will be discussing her turbulent journey of navigating the dualism that was both absorbed and imposed on her approach to CBT and E-H\, and how over time\, she has come to release her grip on a dualistic mindset and discover a beautiful harmony between the two. This journey involved learning to discover and embrace the different parts of who she is and allow her experiences to shape how she engages the world in a way that resonates with the authenticity of her soul. Participants will be exploring the impact of attachments and domestication (as described in ancient Toltec wisdom) and how to recognize and exercise choice amid a world that tries so hard to make us fit the status quo. \n\n\n\nBio Statement from Kayla: “I’m Kayla Birkeland and I’m a licensed therapist in the state of Washington. I recently transitioned (September 2024) to a group counseling practice in Vancouver\, WA\, and currently provide individual therapy to people 11 years old and up. Previously\, I worked with youth in schools (K-12). I started my journey in community mental health and then spent 4 years at a small special education behavioral school in the Vancouver School District. My professional passions are working with those who have experienced trauma\, the neurodivergent community\, and those who are part of disenfranchised groups. I feel strongly about social justice and helping people find their voice and find spaces where their voices can be heard. Personally\, I have been married for 14 ½ years to a wonderfully supportive spouse accepting of all my quirks and neurospicyness. In my free time I enjoy boxing\, being outdoors\, and spending time with loved ones.” \n\n\n\nRegistration Dead register cheers\, Michelleline: Registration will close 24hrs before the event starts. SUMMARY:Strategies that Deepen Therapeutic Presence: An Existential-Humanistic Perspective w/ Orah Krug\, PhD\, LMFT
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date! \n\n\n\nPresented by EHI Cofounder: Orah Krug\, PhD\, LMFT \n\n\n\nDate/Time:  Friday\, March 28th\, 2025 at 1pm-3pm Pacific | 4pm-6pm Eastern | 8pm-10pm UTCLocation: Online Via Zoom Enrollment: $25 for General tickets. $10 Elder/Student. We aim to support those who find cost an issue. We offer economic inequality/hardship tickets for $10. Please contact Michelle via the form on our contact page to get a code for reduced ticket. Host: Existential-Humanistic Institute (EHI)CE*: Approved for 2 CE credits \n\n\n\nThe workshop offers practical strategies for therapists to enhance their therapeutic presence\, a fundamental aspect of effective therapy. Participants will learn through discussion and demonstration how to cultivate a deeper connection with clients by actively following the therapeutic process and offering insightful process comments. Process comments deepen the work by focusing for example\, not simply on the “problem” the client brings to therapy but on their way of relating to the problem. The workshop will also explore ways to deepen subjective presence such as “searching” and guided meditation. These interventions cultivate curiosity and invite discovery of something new for the client\, perhaps a newfound empathy for themselves or a new understanding of a significant relationship or experience. Additionally\, participants will discover through discussion and demonstration how working in the here and now: a) strengthens the therapeutic relationship\, and b) focuses the client on the way they are relating. Here and now works focuses on the interpersonal process between client and therapist as it unfolds in the present moment. Grounded in the Existential-Humanistic (E-H) approach\, these strategies will provide valuable tools for therapists seeking to create a more profound and impactful therapeutic experience for their clients.  \n\n\n\nGeneral Outline (2 hours):  \n\n\n\n● Welcome Introduction (5 min)  \n\n\n\n● Process Comments: discussion\, demonstration\, and practice (35 mins)  \n\n\n\n● Deepening subjective presence: discussion\, demonstration\, and practice (35 mins)   \n\n\n\n● Working in the Here and Now: discussion\, demonstration\, and practice (35 mins) \n\n\n\n● Final Debrief/Q&A (10 mins) \n\n\n\nOrah Krug\, PhD is recognized in her field as a master clinician\, supervisor\, teacher and author. She is an original cofounder of EHI and founder of Krug Counseling in Oakland\, California. She has been a licensed psychotherapist for over 30 years and an adjunct professor at Saybrook University for over 15 years. Through decades of client work\, research and teaching Orah has developed a comprehensive process applicable for individuals or couples. She is an editor\, author\, and contributing author of leading E-H textbooks:  Supervision Essentials for Existential-Humanistic Therapy\, Exisential-Humanistic Therapy\, Psychotherapy: Theory and Practice\, and The Wiley World Handbook of Existential Therapy. \n\n\n\n*Continuing Education Information\n\n\n\nThis program have been approved for 2 CE credits for full participation. \n\n\n\nCE Fee is separate: $18 \n\n\n\n\nAPA Division 32\, Society for Humanistic Psychology is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SUMMARY:E-H Reading Group via EHNW in Portland
DESCRIPTION:E-H Reading Group – Open to All \n\n\n\nFacilitated by: River Heisler w/ EHNW Board Members Ryan Brown and Justin Rock \n\n\n\nThis Existential/Humanistic (EH) reading group is a space to engage creatively\, constructively\, and spontaneously with the works of philosophers belonging to a large stream of “existential” and “phenomenological” thought (terms with which we will certainly experiment and contend). The group will be a space to critique\, question\, and experience the works which influence what it means to call oneself an “existential” therapist\, “existentialist”\, or an “existentially”-influenced human. Starting with the idea of alterity\, and what the experience of the Other can tell us about being human\, we will plunge headfirst into Emmanuel Levinas’ Totality and Infinity (November). Please read as much as you are able! Please also read Toward a Liberation Psychology [translated by Adrianne Aron]” by Ignacio Martin-Baro\, from the volume Writings for a Liberation Psychology\, as it provides a deep and meaningful framework from which to question and frame how we may engage in this type of critique from a consciousness-raising perspective. \n\n\n\nThis group started in November. Please feel free to contact River Heisler\, at heis6654@pacificu.edu\, with any questions!

\n\n\n\nIn this 16-hour online training\, leading instructors in the E-H field will provide theoretical explanation and experiential opportunities for the development and/or strengthening of skills and capacities that are not only core to the E-H approach but can also support therapists of many other modalities cultivate a foundation for optimizing their technical skills. Topics covered include: \n\n\n\n\nThe cultivation of presence as both the ground of therapy and one of its primary objectives\n\n\n\nThe focus on the “living moment” in working with the “here-and-now” experience of clients – staying with what presents itself phenomenologically rather than employing theoretical interventions\n\n\n\nThe differentiation between primary\, direct experience and secondary\, interpretive experience – and the emphasis on working with phenomenological experience\n\n\n\nThe meaning-making process and the formation of the Self-and-World Construct – helping client and therapist understand identity construction and de-construction\n\n\n\nHow to work with the client’s ways of being in the world and how to utilize the therapist-client relationship to help shift unhelpful ways of being\n\n\n\nHow to identify and work through clients’ inner battles in order to support their longings to emerge\, and feel more choice-ful and psychospiritually whole\n\n\n\nIntegrating and embodying your theoretical beliefs and authentic sense of self in your work as a therapist\n\n\n\n\nThis training is ideal for those who have not yet had any intensive training in E-H therapy or for those who have and are seeking a refresher or reinforcement of what they’ve learned: this training works in and of itself but can also be a precursor to the longer residential training EHI holds or even a helpful follow-up to the residential training. \n\n\n\nTuition Fee ScheduleRegular Tuition: $685* for General (Licensed/Pre-Licensed) | *$635 for Elders (65 and older) and Students (enrolled in a Masters or PhD level program).Early Early Bird Offer through 8/15/24: $615 General | $565 Elder/StudentEarly Bird Offer 8/16/24-9/15/24: $645 General | $595 Elder/Student \n\n\n\nTwo Payment Options Available: If you register by 9/15/24 you can either pay in full or choose the split-payment option. SUMMARY:Salon: The Person of the Therapist
DESCRIPTION:Announcing the second EHI Online Salon \n\n\n\nTopic: The Person of The Therapist \n\n\n\nFacilitators: Sonja Saltman\, EHI Core Instructor and Joshua Diliberto\, EHI Teaching Assistant            \n\n\n\nDate:  October 29\, 2024 11 am -12:30 PDT (2pm-3:30pm EDT; 6pm-7:30pm UTC) \n\n\n\nOnline: Via Zoom/Zoom Breakout Rooms \n\n\n\nFee: $25 for General/Professional. Please reach out to Michelle via the form on contact page for info on $10 economic inequality/hardship tickets. \n\n\n\nLimited Registration: Due to the format EHI is limiting the number of places to 30 participants for this Salon. \n\n\n\nEHI is excited to be starting a new series of experiential salons. The intention for these salons is to honor EHI’s commitment to experiential learning as well as the time honored group process of discussion and integration. \n\n\n\nOn October 29\, EHI Is hosting a two-hour virtual community space for examining and invoking The Person of the Therapist. Personal\, relational\, and cosmological aspects are considered in group discussion\, practical demonstration\, small group engagement\, and will be flexible in nature to follow emergent wishes from the group. \n\n\n\nGeneral Outline (2 hours): \n\n\n\n\nWelcome Introduction\, poem\, check-ins (25 minutes)\n\n\n\nConceptual frames for understanding Person of Therapist (20 min total)Intro “The Person of the Therapist in Practice”Sonja\, and Josh share conceptual definitionsIntroduce personal context as example of one’s own way of being\, seeing\, and holding relational psychotherapeutic worldsMembers are invited to provide their own definitions\n\nWhole group process of topic\, encouraging first person engagement and description that may also involve other sources\n\n\n\n\n\nExperiential exercise: “Exploring how it is to be The Person of the Therapist.” (35 min)We ask for a volunteer “client” and Sonja and Josh both individually respond to the client (we could add a couple of responses from the group as well). We follow this interaction with a perusal of what feelings/thoughts within us\, the therapists\, led to a given response reaction. That means looking at arrows that provoked choosing a particular path. What evoked curiosity and interest in the therapist for the next interaction? What does this choice reveal about the person of the therapist?\n\nWe can make contact with the movement (the music) being experienced from the group in the here and now stay with it as a whole\, and as it flows between persons.\n\n\n\n\n\nSmall groups (25 min)\n\n\n\nFinal Large Group Process: (15 min)\n\nDiscussion\, Integration\, shared resources\, and announcements\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs we acknowledge that the word “salon” implies a more free flowing structure this is a flexible outline that will be modified by Sonja and Josh to work with what is happening in the moment. \n\n\n\nFor Reference: \n\n\n\nThere is no mandatory reading for this offering but the text book\, Existential-Humanistic Therapy\, 2nd Edition by Schneider and Krug published APA\, and The Art of Counseling\, revised edition 1989 are resources we would like to mention.

SUMMARY:Dream Work: An Existential-Humanistic Method to Deepen Connection to the Cosmological Dimension
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Sonja Saltman\, MS and Core EHI Instructor\n\n\n\nWhen: September 28th\, 2024 @ 10am – 12pm PT  \n\n\n\nWhere: Online through Zoom  \n\n\n\nFee: $25 General/$10 Elders & Students \n\n\n\nContinuing Education*:  This workshop has been approved for 2 CE credits for full\, live participation. Additional CE Fee is $18. \n\n\n\nDreams represent a restatement of the client’s deeper problems\, only in a different language—a language of visual imagery.  The agency of the mind turns feelings\, attitudes\, and experiences into visual form (e.g.\, a journey\, a dilapidated house\, descending into a basement\, etc.). From an E-H perspective\, the point is not to fully and accurately interpret the dream—it can’t be done\, and misses the point.  \n\n\n\nJust as we learn to work with clients’ processes in the here-and-now\, E-H dream work involves bringing the dream into the here-and-now in order to find what is most alive\, most curious\, most baffling or disturbing to the client\, and to facilitate an in vivo exploration – often leading to deeper contact with a less conscious part of oneself.  \n\n\n\nWorking with dreams from the Humanistic perspective (in this case\, from the Gestalt perspective)\, the dreamer is helped to play out parts of her dream as aspects of her own existence\, i.e. a working through of the dream as a present event rather than past history and as action rather than a basis for interpretation.  Attendees will receive a didactic introduction to dream work through a Gestalt/E-H lens\, get to see 2 live demonstrations (and perhaps be one of the 2 volunteers)\, and engage in discussion about this approach to dream work. \n\n\n\nPresentation Outline: \n\n\n\n\nFinal Debrief/Q&A (25 mins)\n\n\n\nWelcome/Introduction (10 mins)\n\n\n\nDidactic Presentation (15 mins)\n\n\n\nFirst Dream Work Demonstration (25 mins)\n\n\n\nDebrief/Q&A (20 mins)\n\n\n\nSecond Dream Work Demonstration (25 mins)\n\n\n\n\nAdditional info: Scott wrote an blog post on Dream Work from an E-H perspective on The Existential Moment\, read Dream Work post here. \n\n\n\n\nThis program has been approved for 2 CE credits for full participation. Separate CE Fee: $18APA Division 32\, Society for Humanistic Psychology is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. APA Division 32\, Society for Humanistic Psychology maintains responsibility for this program and its content. \n\n\n\n\nEHI endeavors to make offerings accessible for interested learners.  Please email or call Michelle via the contact page for disability accommodations and more course info. \n\n\n\nLMFTs\, LCSWs\, LPCs: You too might be eligible for APA Continuing Education Credit for your renewals!  \n\n\n\nState licensing boards for LPCs\, LCSWs\, and LMFT’s often accept CE credits from an APA Approved Provider for their continuing education requirements. Please check with your Board to ensure they accept CEs from an APA Approved Provider like Society for Humanistic Psychology. (CA BBS takes these CE credits).
