SUMMARY:Integrating the Self: Helping Clients Depolarize and Cultivate Self-compassion
DESCRIPTION:Developed and Facilitated by Galia Schechter\, PsyD\, EHI Affiliate Instructor \nThis webinar is the seventh in EHI’s series of webinars on depolarization:Depolarizing Our Minds\, Our Hearts & Our Nation \nWhen: Saturday\, February 20th\, 2021; 10am-1pm\, Pacific Time \nWhere: Online via Zoom Meeting w/ Zoom Breakout Rooms \nCost: $35 General/Professional; $20 Student/Elder; Economic Hardship $10**We understand that COVID-19 has created economic stress for many\, so if you are experiencing economic hardship due to COVID-19\, the requested fee for webinars in this series is $10 (though no one will be turned away due to lack of funds-please contact Michelle for assistance at events@ehinstitute.org ). \nSeries Discount Available: Attend a workshop in this series and we will send you a code for $7.50 off your next series workshop registration. \n3 CEs for live presentation*: $18.50 \n  \nIntegrating the Self: Helping Clients Depolarize and Cultivate Self-compassion \nOne of the greatest human paradoxes manifests in the way our deep longings for love\, acceptance and belonging can actually lead us to suppress and contract against parts of our self that we feel might be “bad”\, “unwelcome” and “not O.K”. And yet it is the process of self-judgment and contraction that unintentionally contribute to unnecessary human suffering in the forms of loneliness\, existential emptiness and common alienation from self\, others and even our planetary home. \nPerhaps the greatest antidote and medicine to loneliness and alienation from self and others is the cultivation of deep experiences of self-compassion and awareness of common humanity. To authentically embody self-compassion is to awaken a direct knowing that our inner experiences\, no matter how uncomfortable\, scary\, embarrassing or “dark”\, relate to and reveal fundamental universal longings for love\, belonging and freedom. \nIn this workshop\, inspired by and based mainly on Process Experiential\, Phenomenology\, Humanistic-Existential and Mindfulness-based traditions\, participants will learn how to help clients move from polarized\, self-shaming and self-alienating states to states of self- and other-compassion. The benefits of these shifts include the emergence or deepening of authenticity\, vitality\, empathy\, generosity and intra-psychic integration. Tapping also into Gestalt\, Family Systems\, Emotion- Focused and mind-body inquiry practices we will explore the following themes: \n\nPrinciples of conscious healing\, including families of mindfulness practices\nNeo-Humanistic existential frameworks for understanding the ways we internalize a sense of the deficient self and contract against parts of the self\, including brief discussion of Internal Family Systems (IFS)\, Process-Experiential Emotion Focused and Buddhist psychological frameworks\nHow to identify and work with our own living processes of contraction and rejection of parts of self as a means to gain a deeper understanding of client processes\nHow to identify and work with living processes for making contact with our own deep basic goodness and capacity to accept and integrate self toward congruence and wholeness\nAwareness of collective resonance around basic vulnerability and basic existential longings that are at the heart of contracted and transforming self\n\n  \nOur Presenter: \nDr. Galia Schechter is a licensed clinical psychologist and Buddhist practitioner. She has extensive training and experience in multiple mind-body modalities. Along with having been in private practice for 11 years\, she has worked as a clinical director\, a clinical supervisor\, a clinical trainer and an organizational consultant. \nPrior to getting her doctorate in clinical psychology from the Wright Institute and becoming a licensed psychologist\, she received an MBA from Georgetown University and worked for organizations in the U.S. and abroad in governance\, human rights and international development. \n*CE Information for the Workshop\nAPA Division 32\, Society for Humanistic Psychology is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SUMMARY:An Interplay of Wisdom\, Emotion\, and Reason in Depolarizing the Mind
DESCRIPTION:Workshop on Utilizing Langerian Mindfulness in Working With Clients\nSaturday\, 11/14/2020\n10am-1pm Pacific Time; Check-in at 9:45am\nOnline workshop via Zoom & Zoom Breakout Rooms\n3 CEs \nWhile meditation-based mindfulness plays a significant role in espousing specific modes of mind that are prone to tranquility\, calmness\, and equanimity\, Langerian mindfulness develops a creative state of mind that is also flexibly tailored toward a peace-oriented mentality with potential features for a foundational change in one’s psychological being. \nMany mental health practitioners are aware of and utilize meditation-based mindfulness techniques in working with their clients. These techniques can help improve mental health and provide a number of health benefits in general. Fewer practitioners\, however\, are aware of and utilize a Langerian mindfulness approach when working with clients; and yet Langerian mindfulness can help increase psychological flexibility\, intentionality and well-being. \nIn this webinar\, Sayyed Mohsen Fatemi\, PhD\, will demonstrate and discuss Langerian mindfulness (developed almost 50 years ago by Dr. Ellen Langer)\, particularly as a way to increase empowerment through seeing and making conscious\, mindful choices. In increasing psychological flexibility and awareness of choice\, Langerian mindfulness can be an effective resource in depolarizing the polarized mind.  In fact\, research shows that an attitude of Langerian mindfulness\, with its positive impact on capacities for creativity and self-discovery\, cultivates and is associated with the depolarized mind; and that “mindlessness” – the state of narrowed awareness and responsiveness – correlates with the polarized mind. \nDr. Fatemi will also emphasize the roles of reason and emotion in the functioning of the mind and how mindlessness and mindfulness give rise to different modes of being with different implications for thoughts\, beliefs\, feelings\, emotions and behaviors. He will articulate ontological explanations of fear and anxiety\, detail how underlying fears and anxieties give rise to the polarized mind and highlight how increased capacity for conscious choice sits at the heart of existential approaches to increasing health and well-being. \nPsychotherapists are often dealing with the effects and influences of polarization on their clients\, whether in working with couples\, an individual locked in a rigid way of seeing things or with those suffering in the context of the deep division and antagonism that exists in our country today. Join us on November 14th as Dr. Fatemi provides training and education in how to find wisdom in the process of depolarizing the mind with the support of Langerian mindfulness. \n \n Registration

SUMMARY:What Disturbs Me Most About You...is Me
DESCRIPTION:Developed & Facilitated by: Nader Shabahangi\, PhD\, LMFT\, RCFE\nTime: 10am-1pm Pacific Time; Checkin 9:45am\n\nOnline workshop via Zoom utilizing Zoom Breakout Rooms\n\nHow do we learn to live in these times? How do we prioritize in our life during such a period of upheaval? Our world is undergoing so much change on a daily basis\, so many people on earth are suffering\, live in poverty\, are dying due to the effects of climate change\, of hunger\, of disease. Where do we turn for awareness so we can stop and think\, perhaps avert the calamity\, perhaps an extinction we are about to face? We need a different way of understanding ourselves. We need a different perception of how we can live together on this planet.\n\nTo find such a way\, we turn to those who have always been – at least until recently – the shepherds of human civilizations: our wise elders and thinkers. To stop the destructive path of polarization\, of us versus them\, we shift into a fundamentally different attitude to life and living. This attitude follows ancient wisdom that knows that everything is connected and united. This wisdom emphasizes that as we do to our outer nature\, we also do to our inner nature. It believes that if we do harm to what lives outside of us\, we also harm what lives inside of us.\n\nOld wisdom traditions\, and now also Quantum Theories\, point to the observer participating in the observed\, being the observed. What disturbs me about others who have a different perspective from me thus also points to something inside me – else I could not ‘see’ it. This fundamental shift in attitude looks at all that manifests as being part of a whole. We cannot discard certain parts of life thinking we do not desire them\, while we preference other parts as acceptable. We move beyond like and dislike\, we move beyond good and evil. With such a change in attitude\, we look differently at what disturbs\, irritates\, and angers us in others. Rather than thinking that the other is wrong\, we look at the other as teacher. As Carl Jung pointed out\, everything that irritates us can lead to a deeper self-understanding. The more we understand\, the more we become truly who we are. We are proposing that it is in accepting our disturbances and irritations\, we become whole. As whole beings\, we can create an opportunity to live in harmony with each other and with mother Earth.\n\nIn this webinar\, we will engage in concrete exercises that allow us to feel into the essence of the ‘other’s’ position and viewpoint. This will allow us to not only ’see’ the ‘other’ but also to deepen our own self-understanding. This way we can experience as much our unity as our differences. All is one; one is all. \n\n\nRegistration

SUMMARY:Depolarizing of America for Ourselves and Our Clients
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by: Kirk Schneider\, Ph.D. and Bob Edelstein\, LMFT \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar is the first one in EHI’s new series of webinars on depolarization: \nDepolarizing Our Minds\, Our Hearts & Our Nation\nThis webinar will present mental health practitioners with a conflict mediation approach that can help them work with the sense of otherness both in themselves and with their clients. This webinar will be both didactic and experiential. \nWhen:  July 11\, 2020\, 10am – 1pm PST \nWhere:  Online Utilizing Zoom \nHow Much:  $27.50 \nIn the wake of the pandemic and recent racial\, political\, and economic upheaval in our country\, this approach addresses practitioners’ work and lives. Drawing from his new book The Depolarizing of America: A Guidebook for Social Healing\, Kirk Schneider\, along with colleague Bob Edelstein\, will demonstrate this new conflict mediation approach–titled the “Experiential Democracy Dialogue.” We will also provide a space for dyads for audience members to try the skills on their own.  The Experiential Democracy Dialogue provides a supportive\, highly structured format that invites people from contrasting cultural and ideological backgrounds to learn about and understand each other\, rather than automatically being closed to each other’s point of view.  The upshot of the approach is that it can notably improve people’s capacities to humanize each other and to achieve common ground. For practitioners\, specifically\, it can enhance capabilities to be more present\, both within oneself and with one’s clients\, which is foundational to effective practice. The approach can also help practitioners to work with the divisiveness within themselves in regards to the polarized issues in society\, which in turn may help with their work with their clients. \nCompanion Book\nThe companion book that this training is based on is the newly published\, The Depolarizing of America: A Guidebook for Social Healing. This book is not necessary to join the training! However it is recommended as a reference and context if you will be using the skills outlined in this workshop outside the workshop setting. \nWorkshop Format\nThis webinar is an online workshop that will be both didactic and experiential utilizing Zoom Meeting. The format will include all attendees being assigned to a dyad to work the approach with another attendee. \nThe workshop will start with a short presentation and a full demonstration of the 6 phases of this approach. Attendees will be able to Q&A the presenters prior to breaking off into their dyad breakout rooms. Due to the nature of Zoom and the limited time we will not be able to customize the dyads for the attendees; they will be random assignments. \nTechnology Recommendations & Limitations\nThis webinar utilizes Zoom meeting and will feature the use of Zoom Breakout Rooms. Attendees are responsible for ensuring the device they will use is adequate to access the workshop and for downloading Zoom app appropriate for their device. \nRequired: A stable wifi connection and a device that can access the internet connection. Audio & Video will need to be accessible to the Zoom app the device uses to join the Workshop. SUMMARY:Integrating the Self Workshop
DESCRIPTION:EHI Winter Workshop\nIntegrating the Self: The Power of Presence and Community in Cultivating Self-Compassion\nA Day-Long Workshop Developed & Facilitated by:Galia Schechter\, PhD \nContinuing Education: 6 CE credit hours* \nA couple of scholarship tickets are available! Please reach out to Michelle for details: conf@ehinstitute.org. \n \nTherapeutic Professionals Invited!\nWe invite you to join us as Dr Schechter works with us in exploring ways to guide clients in accepting and integrating the self toward congruence and wholeness! This workshop is intended to engage and enrich the work of therapeutic professionals. \nSave the date to join Galia and EHI for this day of dynamic engagement. \nIn this workshop\, inspired by and based mainly on Process Experiential\, Phenomenology\, Humanistic-Existential\, and Mindfulness-based traditions\, participants will learn how to help clients move from self-shaming and self-alienating states to states of self- and other-compassion. Tapping also into Gestalt\, Family Systems\, Emotion-Focused and mind-body inquiry practices we will utilize individual and group based psychological inquiry practices\, therapeutic explorations\, mindfulness practices\, reflections and discussions\, to explore the following themes: \n\nPrinciples of conscious healing\, including families of mindfulness practices;\nNeo-Humanistic existential frameworks for understanding the ways we internalize a sense of the deficient self and contract against parts of the self\, including brief discussion of Internal Family Systems (IFS)\, Process-Experiential Emotion Focused and Buddhist psychological frameworks;\nExplore and identify our own living processes of contraction and rejection of parts of self as a means of gaining a deeper understanding of client processes;\nExplore and identify living processes for making contact with our own deep basic goodness and capacity to accept and integrate self toward congruence and wholeness;\nExplore and identify collective resonance around basic vulnerability and basic existential longings at the heart of the contracted and transforming self.\n\nOverview\nOne of the greatest human paradoxes manifests in the way our deep longings for love\, acceptance and belonging coexist with our human capacity for self-judgment and self-alienation\, all too often perpetuated by powerful cultural conditions of worth. \nMoreover\, it is often our deep desire to belong and be accepted that leads us to suppress and contract against parts of our self we feel may be “bad” “unwelcome” and “not O.K”. And yet it is the process of self judgment and contraction that unintentionally contribute to unnecessary human suffering in the forms of loneliness\, existential emptiness and common alienation from self\, others and even our planetary home. \nLearning Objectives\nParticipants will be able to: \n\nExplain at least one (1) framework for understanding the ways the deficient self-identity develops and affects capacity for self-compassion;\nDiscuss at least one (1) framework for understanding how mindfulness-based practices can awaken self-compassion\nIdentify two (2) ways in which self-compassion improves mental health outcomes;\nApply at least two (2) interventions to shift the relationship with parts of the self from contraction to acceptance;\nDemonstrate at least two (2) group-based inquiry practices that support both the awakening of self-compassion and awareness of common humanity.\n\nMore Workshop Info\n*Accessibility: It is the policy of EHI to make every reasonable effort to provide qualified attendees with disabilities with the opportunity to take full advantage of its programs and events. SUMMARY:Envisioning Eldership Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Embracing a Joyous View of Aging and Living – An Existential\, Process-Oriented Approach \nA Day-Long Workshop Developed & Facilitated by EHI Core Instructor:\nDr. Nader Shabahangi\, MFT\, RCFE \nDate: Saturday\, December 7th\, 2019 \nA day dynamic engagement with Nader Shabahangi\, PhD\, MFT\, RCFE! \nIntegrating existential-humanistic and process-oriented philosophy and methodology with the latest research in gerontology\, this workshop helped participants understand the concept and practice of eldership and invite them to reflect on their own beliefs about adulthood and aging. \nParticipants explored the possibilities for developing new identity constructions and frameworks for conceptualizing aging\, as well as meaning and purpose in old age. This new perspective can support not only psychotherapists but also any any person who is interested in more effectively working with elders and themselves. This approach and learning also contributes to the health and well-being of individuals and communities in general. \nMore than ever\, we crave a new definition of aging that borrows from the great thinkers\, artists\, philosophers and wisdom traditions throughout history. Blending existential\, process-oriented psychotherapeutic insights and centuries of philosophical wisdom with modern pragmatism learned from being a CEO of eldercare communities in the San Francisco Bay Area for over a quarter of a century\, this workshop seeks a thoughtful map on aging\, not a “To Do” list that illuminates yet another reason to fail. \nEldership isn’t a state\, but a process. It’s not something to be achieved\, but practiced in our own unique journey! \nTherapeutic Professionals and General Public Invited!\nThis workshop was intended to engage the general public and enrich the work of therapeutic professionals. We invited those interested in envisioning a new paradigm of eldership from an existential process-oriented approach and those who work with elders\, nurses\, care partners\, psychologists\, therapists\, social workers\, counselors\, all were welcome! \nAbstract:\nDrawing upon the philosophical roots\, literature\, and practices of humanistic psychology and philosophy\, as well as the latest research in gerontology\, this presentation will focus on the creation of positive frameworks of aging\, thereby supporting participants in improving therapeutic rapport with older adult clients\, in helping clients move towards a meaning-based understanding of the aging process and in understanding and utilizing principles of eldership in clinical practice. Participants will be invited to explore their personal identities\, reflecting on their own beliefs on aging\, adulthood and elderhood in order to develop new identity constructions as well as adaptive frameworks for conceptualizing aging\, meaning and purpose in old age. This new perspective can potentially nourish personal well-being\, enlarge the context of psychotherapy practice and contribute to the health of clients’ and clinicians’ inner and outer world. \nLearning objectives:\n\nAttendees will be able to list at least 3 reasons for the need to work therapeutically from an eldership perspective.\nAttendees will be able to explain at least 3 ways in which humanistic principles inform the concept of “eldership”.\nAttendees will be able to summarize the central concept of four-phase conflict resolution and how it is informed by an attitude of eldership.\nAttendees will be able to identify 3 ways in which eldership’s inherent focus on a sustainable way of living improves social and psychological health.

The essence of an individual can only be found within a mutual inner and outer dialogue. It is through a phenomenological openness towards the world\, through one’s encounter with others and towards oneself that a person discovers their unique “existential call” or their unique essence. This discovery enables a person to respond freely towards any given situation from their essential core. “Personal Existential Analysis” has been developed as a method to help a person discover their true essence in order to navigate difficult life situations or conditions of psychopathology.” \n“A central theme in Existential Analysis has always been the question of meaning in life. Recent phenomenological and empirical research on the structure of human existence has shown that there are three existential motivations that precede a fourth motivation concerned with finding meaning. The first fundamental existential motivation deals with the very fact of being in the world; I exist. The second motivation follows by asking: how do I respond to the fact that I have a life? The third asks how do I respond to the fact that I have an identity\, that I am an individual\, a self? The fourth motivation centres on a personal existential meaning\, (Frankl’s Logotherapy) as individuals fundamentally seek greater contexts and values for which they want to live.” \nAlfried Längle\, M.D.\, Ph.D.\, Dr. h.c.mult.\, and Professor of Psychotherapy was born in 1951 in Austria\, studied medicine and psychology and works in private practice in Vienna as psychotherapist. He worked in close collaboration with Viktor Frankl from 1983 to 1991. Dr. Längle is the founder of the International Society for Logotherapy and Existential Analysis (Vienna) and it’s psychotherapeutic training program. He is a noted lecturer at many universities in Europe and South America. Since 2004 he has served as a Professor of Applied Psychology (psychotherapy) at Moscow’s HSE-university and is a guest professor at Vienna’s Sigmund Freud university (since 2011). Dr. Längle has served as Vice President of the International Federation of Psychotherapy (IFP – 2002-2010) and President of the International Society for Logotherapy and Existential Analysis\, Vienna until 2017. Dr. Längle has authored over 400 publications and is the recipient of six honorary professorships. \nFor more information about Dr. Alfried Längle (Laengle)\, please visit his website www.laengle.info. \nEHI 10th Existential-Humanistic Conference\nNov 30th & Dec 1st\, 2018 \nFrom Sigmund Freud to Viktor Frankl to Alfried Längle:\nThe Legacy of Vienna and the Search for Meaning \n2018 CONFERENCE SCHEDULE \nFriday Evening Keynote*: \nTo Live With Inner Consent – An Existential Analytical Approach to a Fulfilling Life\nAlfried Längle\, Vienna \nHuman beings strive for happiness. We all want to have a good life. But how can we reach this goal? Upon what does it depend to get fulfillment in life? – The good life depends upon much more from ourselves than we often think. In large part\, it depends upon really becoming ourselves. Only when we can make use of what we are essentially\, in the deep inner self\, and only if we can thus bring ourselves to the world\, “to existence\,” can we get back a feeling that all our endeavors are worth being lived. \nThe concept of “inner consent” is key to such existential access\, or the life well lived. It embraces our freedom as well as our relationship and feelings\, our perception of the world’s reality and possible development in the future including the meaning of existence. This feeling of inner consent reflects our basic capacity to deal with the world and ourselves. \nFurther\, it forms a matrix for motivation and practical guidance of life but also for the understanding and treatment of psychopathology. In short\, the question of inner consent forms the basis for the structural model of modern Existential Analytical Psychotherapy. \nCEs- Want to know about what you will be learning? Please email Michelle at Conf@ehinstitute.org for the full Workshop course description: including the outline\, learning objectives\, limitations and references. \nFriday\, 8pm-9pm Social Hour: Mingle\, Nosh and Network \nSaturday\, December 1st\n9:00AM – 5:30PM\nALFRIED LANGLE’S WORKSHOP & PANEL/Q&A FOLLOWING \nSaturday\, 10am – 1pm*: Expanding Humanistic Practice with Existential Analysis and Logotherapy\nAlfried Längle\, Vienna \nThis workshop focuses on building a bridge between the given humanistic understanding of treatment and the add-ons by Existential Analysis and Logotherapy. Furthermore\, it offers the opportunity to arrive at a closer view of four key existential themes. These four themes derive from a phenomenological understanding of human experience\, and form an inescapable life-challenge with which each person must confront. They are: the world\, being alive\, being a person\, and needing meaning. \nThe workshop focused on describing the application of these themes to psychotherapy and their implication for psychopathology. Thus\, it opens access to introspective uses of the existential themes and for experiments in everyday living. A demonstration of the approach was featured during the second half of the presentation. \n1pm-2:30pm LUNCH BREAK- On our own \n2:30pm-5:00 Audience Participation w/ Dr Laengle \nAttendees had the opportunity to engage with Dr. Laengle regarding the presentations\, and watch a demonstration with an attendee volunteer. \n5:00-5:30pm EHI’s Kirk Schneider with Alfried Laengle \nThe chief aim of Kirk and Alfried’s discussion was to elaborate on and sometimes challenge points of contrast and comparison between Dr. Laengle’s existential-analytic approach to psychotherapy and the existential-humanistic approach. Such elaboration and questioning is aimed at helping both board members and the audience to better understand Dr. Laengle’s approach and to consider the opportunities for bridge-building between his existential analytical and the existential-humanistic approach. \nDr Schneider and Dr Laengle discussed the relevance of Existential therapeutic models and Existential Humanistic therapy today for people in the world – how does it help the common person live a more ‘meaningful’ life\, so to speak? \n  \n  \n  \n
