The conversation will be salon-style where participants share what is present for them as the conversation emerges. BiographyI am passionate about the existential-humanistic perspective in both my personal and professional life. To me\, the perspective embraces all of what it means to exist and values each unique\, individual journey. I value that we always have a choice to change our attitude and behavior\, even in the most limited of conditions or circumstances. I take on the powerful responsibility that our choice matters in that we impact the world by our feelings\, thoughts and actions. This perspective also embraces that as human beings we are always moving towards health and wholeness\, both individually and collectively. BiographyDave is a licensed psychologist\, providing compassionate and patient-centered therapy in a primary care setting. He completed a doctorate in clinical psychology and a post-doctoral fellowship in health psychology in the integrated primary care model. He currently works for Premise Health Care\, at Intel Health for Life Centers and sees clients that are Intel employees or their dependents. He engages in brief interventions\, diagnostic evaluations\, and ongoing psychotherapy for individuals\, couples\, and adolescents. Dave has experience with multi-cultural patients and can provide therapy in Spanish if needed\, as he has lived and traveled throughout Latin America. Dave has also taught a variety of psychology courses at several colleges and universities\, including coursework in clinical\, abnormal\, group\, adolescent and basic psychology. Dave received a year of specialized training and conducted academic research in psychotherapy with persons living with HIV. DESCRIPTION:The Experiential Democracy Dialogue: Using Depth Psychology to Address Cultural and Political Divides\n\n\n\nInstructor: Kirk J. Schneider\, Ph.D Host: Manhattan Institute of Psychoanalysis\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCourse Description and Overview:This workshop will provide skills for therapists who are challenged by the cultural and political stances of their clients and how those stances manifest and potentially affect the therapeutic relationship. Dr. Schneider will introduce the concept of the “polarized mind” (the fixation on a single point of view to the utter exclusion of competing points of view)\, which he developed based on extensive existential-depth and social-psychological research on the roots of human destructiveness. Emerging from concern about the destructive effects of intra-psychic and societal polarization\, along with a resultant deep interest in helping individuals and communities depolarize\, Dr. Schneider spent over fifteen years developing a one-on-one depolarization dialogue format called “Experiential Democracy Dialogue” (detailed in his book The Depolarizing of America: A Guidebook for Social Healing). This approach is a hybrid of his experience as a leading figure in the existential-humanistic psychological and psychotherapeutic movements with his experience as a trained moderator for the nation-wide organization called “Braver Angels.” Braver Angels is a grass-roots citizens’ movement that uses a highly structured group (and individual) format to bring self-identified liberals and conservatives together for “living room” style dialogues. \n\n\n\nExperiential Democracy Dialogue\, as a one-on-one conflict mediation format\, provides a unique resource for clinicians struggling with the ways that socio-cultural and political differences show up in the therapeutic encounter. Techniques and principles from this approach can be utilized by therapists to more adaptively work with the aforementioned challenges as they arise in therapy by helping them develop skills to be more present to clients from highly contrasting backgrounds\, develop greater capacities to empathize with and find common ground with such clients\, and develop greater capacities to experience curiosity and enhance exploration with such clients who formerly elicited anguish or even revulsion. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, Dr. Schneider will outline five phases of Experiential Democracy Dialogue – Guided Visualization\, Providing Background\, Taking a Stance\, Identifying Stereotypes and Results/Discovery – and then demonstrate how to employ Experiential Democracy Dialogue in the therapeutic relationship. Participants will then be placed into dyads to role-play therapist-client\, with the “therapist” leading the pair through the five phases. Schneider\, PhD\, is a licensed psychologist and leading spokesperson for contemporary existential-humanistic psychology. Dr. Schneider is a cofounder and current president of the Existential-Humanistic Institute (an award-winning psychotherapy training center)\, Council Member and Candidate for President of the American Psychological Association (APA)\, past president (2015-2016) of the Society for Humanistic Psychology (Division 32) of the APA\, recent past editor of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology (2005-2012)\, a trained moderator for the conflict mediation group Braver Angels\, and an adjunct faculty member at Saybrook University and Teachers College\, Columbia University. Dr. Schneider is also an Honorary Member of the Society for Existential Analysis and the East European Association for Existential Therapy. His work on existential-integrative psychotherapy has been featured in a special issue of the Journal of Psychotherapy Integration (March\, 2016) and is the inspiration for the psychotherapy training program of the Living Institute\, Toronto\, Canada. A Fellow of five Divisions of the APA\, Dr. Schneider has published over 200 articles\, interviews and chapters and has authored or edited 13 books including The Spirituality of Awe\, The Polarized Mind\, Awakening to Awe\, The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology\, Existential-Humanistic Therapy\, Existential-Integrative Psychotherapy\, The Wiley World Handbook of Existential Therapy\, and The Depolarizing of America:  A Guidebook for Social Healing. Dr. Schneider’s work has been featured in Scientific American\, the New York Times\, Psychology Today and many other health and psychology outlets.

This talk will include research I conducted in graduate school while working in Moldova and how the EH perspective influences my work\, even before I knew what EH was.  BiographyFor over twenty-five years\, Chuck has worked in personal coaching\, workshop facilitation\, and leadership development. He has worked with private\, non-profit\, and governmental organizations. Chuck completed graduate school in clinical mental health counseling in 2012 and has been in private practice since then. His practice of Buddhism began while living in Japan from 1975-77\, and he has been practicing since then. Chuck has been pulled forward throughout his journey by committing to transforming adversity into opportunities to develop resiliency\, peace\, and harmonious connections with our natural environment and others. Delgado and Stefancic (2017) briefly define the CRT movement as “a collection of activists engaged in studying and transforming the relationship among race\, racism\, and power” (p. 3). Furthermore\, they note that CRT is not a unified movement and includes many variations and differing perspectives. CRT is unified by shared questions and concerns more than specific beliefs or dogma. However\, CRT theories are consistently concerned about the problem of race\, racism\, and power and how this impacts individuals\, institutions\, and society. Furthermore\, CRT purports that to understand racial disparities and other racial issues in the United States and around the world it is necessary to consider institutional racism\, systemic racism\, and issues of power. \nRecently\, CRT has come under increased scrutiny and criticism\, including arguments that CRT should be banned from being taught in schools\, universities\, and/or other settings. Many of these criticisms misrepresent CRT\, such as purporting that CRT maintains that some people are inherently inferior or racist. \nIn the first part of this workshop\, the presenters provide an overview of the primary themes of CRT. Next\, they consider criticism of CRT\, both popular and academic\, and provide some responses to these criticisms. In responding to the criticisms\, the presenters consider which are based upon false assumptions about CRT and which reflect valid criticisms. DESCRIPTION:Encounters with the Liberal or Conservative Other: A Jungian Phenomenological Analysis of Individuation through Conflict\nOpen to the Interested Public!\nDescriptionCarly Larson Solome\, clinical psychology doctoral candidate at Fielding Graduate University and recipient of the Kristine Mann award for psychoanalytic research\, presents the results of a phenomenological investigation of Liberals and Conservatives in conversation. In-depth interviews with individuals who participated in depolarizing communication training revealed multi-dimensional aspects of tension and suffering experienced through dialogue with socio-politically different others. The study results give voice to lived first-person experiences of people who responded to the extreme U.S. political divide by engaging with interpersonal\, intrapersonal\, and transpersonal conflict. DESCRIPTION:Practising Existential Therapy: An Introductory 3-Phase Overview workshop with Professor Ernesto Spinelli\nAbout this Event\nExistential therapy places pivotal significance upon the inter-relational aspects of human experience. From this perspective\, the presenting symptoms and disorders brought to therapy are disclosed as direct expressions and outcomes of the client’s overall ‘way of being’ rather than as isolated and disruptive impediments. How these responses impact upon\, maintain\, and disturb the client’s overall worldview is explored from a predominantly descriptively-attuned focus. \nAt the same time\, existential therapy places critical significance upon the actual ‘being with’ that emerges between therapist and client and argues that it is via the contrast and comparison of this lived experience that clients can find the means to reconsider and reconstruct their worldviews or life narratives. In general\, existential therapy challenges the emphasis typically placed on directed and directive change\, preconceived outcomes\, and professional detachment as set by the majority of contemporary psychotherapists. \nThe workshop is derived from Ernesto’s textbook Practising Existential Psychotherapy: The Relational World 2nd edition (Sage\, 2015). Its aim is to provide participants with the unique opportunity to develop their initial understanding of the practice of existential therapy as viewed from the perspective of 3 inter-related phases: \nPhase 1: The Existential Therapist as Idiot – Working with the client’s presenting worldview; \nPhase 2: The Existential Therapist as Fool – Working in ‘the between’; \nPhase 3: The Existential Therapist as Executioner – Endings: possibilities and disappointments. \nThis workshop will be hosted on the Zoom meeting platform where we will use our camera and microphones to interact with each other as a group. \nTo support practitioners in this time of extraordinary circumstances we are offering access to this group for a self-select fee. \nThe self-select fee is a radical inclusion policy to open learning for all colleagues. The guide price for this event is £20.00\, however\, we appreciate that income varies greatly in different locations and circumstances. Please contribute what you can to help us maintain inclusive professional training. \nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli\nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings\, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy\, psychology\, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. In 1999\, Ernesto was awarded a Personal Chair as Professor of psychotherapy\, counselling and counselling psychology. In 2000\, he was the Recipient of BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. And in 2019\, Ernesto received the BPS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Practice. His most recent book\, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World 2nd edition (Sage\, 2015) has been widely praised as a major contribution to the advancement of existential theory and practice. His previous books include: The Interpreted World: an introduction to phenomenological psychology\, 2nd ed (Sage\, 2005); Demystifying Therapy (PCCS\, 2006); Tales of Un-knowing (PCCS\, 2006); and The Mirror and The Hammer: challenging therapeutic orthodoxies (Sage\, 2001). Living up to the existential dictum that life is absurd\, Ernesto is also the author of an on-going series of Private Eye novels\, the first two of which are Scorpio’s Children (2019) and Cruel Love Ways (2020).

DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rocky Mountain Humanistic Counseling & Psychology Association \nPeople of the Rainbow: Working with and Understanding the LGBTQIA+ Community from a Humanistic Therapy Lens—Knowing the Essential Language \n\nFacilitated by Dan Johnson\, PsyD\, & Justin Walmsley\nMay 8th\, 2021\n8am – 11am PDT \n  \nThis workshop is designed to help clinicians working with LGBTQIA+ clients understand the current essential language and why it is important to use the appropriate language.  According to the Centers for Disease Control\, LGBTQIA+ people are members of every community\, diverse\, come from all walks of life\, and include people of all races and ethnicities\, all ages\, all socioeconomic status\, and come from all over the world. As the LGBTQIA+ community grows\, gains more prevalence\, and becomes more visible\, clinicians are seeing a natural increase in the number of clients who claim membership to this community\, as well as clients who present with LGBTQIA+ related issues and problems in session. \nThis workshop begins with exploring the importance of language as well as the language itself. It encompasses a wide range of everyday language practices utilized in and about LGBT communities as well as members within those communities. Language signifies a particular way of envisioning and verbalizing the world around us and this course takes a focused view both from the members of the community as well as outside the community. A meaningful understanding of LGBTQIA+ language\, terms\, background\, and context is a vital first step in providing respectful and inclusive mental healthcare. Becoming more adept and comfortable with this language will help clinicians be better equipped to provide LGBTQIA+ sensitive mental health services to a broader range of people. This course offers not only an understanding of definitions of language within the community but explores the concept of limiting language to define people as well as utilizing it as a tool by focusing on the etymology of key language\, and exploring ideas and concepts associated with the language commonly used both within and outside of the community. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by CPA Annual Convention 2021 -Virtual- \nWorkshop Presented by: Kirk Schneider\, PhD\, PSY \nThe polarized mind is the fixation on a single point of view to the utter exclusion of competing points of view and is one of the chief bases for personal and interpersonal destructiveness. Dr. Schneider will explain how this is one of the most pressing problems today\, and will discuss and demonstrate a conflict mediation approach aimed at depolarizing the polarized mind. This approach\, which is a synthesis of his work with the group process format of “Braver Angels USA” as well as the phenomenologically based “experiential democracy dialogue\,” has been shown to stem stereotyping and bolster human civility. \nAt the end of the presentation\, participants will be able to \n1.  Define the “polarized mind.” \n2. Describe two phases of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue. \n3.
