DESCRIPTION:Supervision: An Existential Therapy Perspective\n\n\n\nKeynote Speaker: Professor Ernesto Spinelli\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\nCost: $29 – $69 \n\n\n\nOnline via Zoom \n\n\n\nThis workshop explores what is distinctive about an existential approach to supervision\, including lecture\, discussion\, and live demos. \n\n\n\nThe supervision of therapists by their colleagues has become one of the primary requirements for continuing professional practice. Just about every Professional Body concerned with therapy emphasizes the importance of supervision and\, typically\, specifies that its members must engage in it under regular and ongoing approved conditions. Although existential therapy is no different in that its members adhere to these governances\, the very concept of supervision\, and in particular what its meaning and purpose might be understood to be\, has remained an ongoing source of debate. \n\n\n\nIn many ways\, the issues surrounding supervision have provided existential therapists with a focus through which to address the wider debate as to what constitutes and defines existential therapy and what may be distinctive about its practice. \n\n\n\nThis workshop explores what is distinctive about an existential approach to supervision. In attempting to do so\, it will address several key aspects in the practice of existential therapy that can be transposed to supervision from an existential therapy perspective. As well as lecture and discussion\, participants will have opportunity to take part in a live demonstration of this approach to supervision. \n\n\n\n\n3 CE’s (PENDING) are available from NASW. See the Q&A below for more information.\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Facilitator: \n\n\n\nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings\, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy\, psychology\, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. \n\n\n\nIn 1999\, Ernesto was awarded a Personal Chair as Professor of Psychotherapy\, Counselling and Counselling Psychology. In 2000\, he was the Recipient of the BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. And in 2019\, Ernesto received the BPS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Practice. His most recent therapy book\, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World 2nd edition (Sage\, 2015) has been widely praised as a major contribution to the advancement of existential theory and practice. His previous books include: The Interpreted World: an introduction to phenomenological psychology\, 2nd ed. (Sage\, 2005); Demystifying Therapy (PCCS\, 2006); Tales of Un-Knowing (PCCS\, 2006); and The Mirror and The Hammer: Challenging therapeutic orthodoxies (Sage\, 2001). \n\n\n\nLiving up to the existential dictum that life is absurd\, Ernesto is also the author of an on-going series of Private Eye novels. In a world run by insurance and the managed care framework\, we are primarily taught that the measure of helping clients lies in results. Did the client’s depression improve? Is the client maintaining sobriety? Have you achieved their initial goals?  \n\n\n\nIn this salon designed for those old and new to the field\, we’ll have a collective conversation about this and alternative understandings of what it means to actually “help” someone. Through an Existential-Humanistic framework\, we will consider aspects of helping that expand on and diverge from the dominant managed care model. These may include emphases on the values of presence\, process\, and the dialogical. In sum\, perhaps we will find that “help” is more complex and relationship-oriented than reductionistic and results-oriented.  \n\n\n\nAbout the FacilitatorsClare Knudsen is a student in Western Seminary’s CACREP-accredited master’s program in clinical mental health counseling\, currently interning at Charis Counseling in Vancouver\, WA. She received additional training in Existential-Humanistic psychotherapy core skills from the Existential-Humanistic Institute (EHI) and joined the board of EHNW in 2024. As a counselor and human\, she believes in the power of presence and safe connection. Outside of counseling\, she enjoys gardening\, spending time with people\, playing on the pottery wheel\, and learning new things.  \n\n\n\nSara J. Smith\, approaches therapy from an Existential-Humanistic framework\, emphasizing authenticity\, presence\, and meaning-making in the therapeutic relationship. Drawing from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)\, experiential methods\, and relational approaches\, Sara tailors therapy to each person with respect for their lived experience. With a background in Community Mental Health\, Sara is committed to social justice\, cultural humility\, and honoring the inherent worth of every individual. Outside of work\, Sara enjoys creative writing\, TTRPGs\, spending time with friends and family\, and engaging in a variety of creative activities. DESCRIPTION:Keynote Speaker: Kirk Schneider\, PhD \n\n\n\nHost: Existential-Humanistic Northwest (EHNW)Date/Time: Saturday\, October 4th\, 2025 | 9am-5pm Pacific Time Zone \n\n\n\nThis workshop will explore how anxiety is hitting the roof in our practices and world precisely because we so often fail to address the underlying or primal anxiety that fuels greater and more destructive anxiety. That which Kirk terms “life-enhancing anxiety\,” is a level of anxiety that enables us to live with and make the best of the depth and mystery of existence. Or to put it more concretely\, it fosters our capacity to live more on the edge of wonder and discovery rather than terror and overwhelm.  \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Kirk will elaborate on the above and provide a series of exercises that can optimize our capacity for life-enhancing anxiety both in our practices and in the communities in which we live. He will also provide a demonstration of such optimization both at the level of therapy and bridge-building dialogue between people who are culturally or politically estranged from one another. As mental health professionals we are required to understand suicide risks and do our best to avert such events as adeptly as we can.I hold acute awareness that medical and mental health clinicians are human and have a very high incidence of suicide and suicide ideation\, as do first responders trained to intervene in grim and often ghastly situations: firefighters\, police\, and EMTs. When I talk with colleagues about the fact that our own and our colleagues’ suicide risks need to be a topic for suicide prevention education\, the sort of response I get is\, “I’ve never heard a presentation on clinicians’ suicide risk.” I’ve been stumbling toward the development of a 3-hour CE presentation on this topic for 3 years and hope to have it online in September 2025. DESCRIPTION:University of Michigan in Ann Arbor  \n\n\n\nTheme: Old Saybrook 3\n\n\n\n“Old Saybrook 3” commemorates the 60th anniversary of the original Old Saybrook conference in 1964\, where humanistic psychology was formalized. It also serves as a follow-up to the “Old Saybrook 2” conference in 2000\, which aimed both to rekindle the Third Force vision of psychology articulated at “Old Saybrook 1” and to re-vision humanistic psychology for the new millennium. Now\, almost a quarter-century later\, to keep humanistic psychology relevant for new and future generations\, it is again time to recontextualize our movement in and for the 2020s. How can humanistic psychology actualize itself today to meet the needs of a fast-paced\, distracted\, survival-focused\, experientially-avoidant\, interpersonally-isolated\, rating- and metric-centered\, systems-blind\, toxically-masculine\, xenophobic\, inequitized\, traumatized\, polarized\, technocratic\, post-truth\, post-pandemic society-in-transition? Paradoxically\, to accomplish that undertaking\, “Old Saybrook 3” also celebrates the wisdom of our elders and reminds us not to turn a blind eye to their rich and enriching intellectual and experiential contributions. How might we demonstrate that humanistic psychology is\, far from being a mere historical relic\, well-equipped in its core values and theory/philosophy\, pluralistic methods\, and robust\, decades-long canon of research/scholarship to resonate with the 2020s zeitgeist? And\, with that\, what can we do to promote an I-Thou way of being in an increasingly I-It world? New date still to be announced. \n\n\n\nFacilitated by: Professor Ernesto Spinelli \n\n\n\nVirtual Event:  EHNW will send Zoom login after registration \n\n\n\nThe supervision of therapists by their colleagues has become one of the primary requirements for continuing professional practice. Just about every Professional Body concerned with therapy emphasizes the importance of supervision and\, typically\, specifies that its members must engage in it under regular and ongoing approved conditions. Although existential therapy is no different in that its members adhere to these governances\, the very concept of supervision\, and in particular what its meaning and purpose might be understood to be\, has remained an ongoing source of debate. \n\n\n\nIn many ways\, the issues surrounding supervision have provided existential therapists with a focus through which to address the wider debate as to what constitutes and defines existential therapy and what may be distinctive about its practice. \n\n\n\nThis workshop explores what is distinctive about an existential approach to supervision. In attempting to do so\, it will address several key aspects in the practice of existential therapy that can be transposed to supervision from an existential therapy perspective. As well as lecture and discussion\, participants will have opportunity to take part in a live demonstration of this approach to supervision. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis (SEA) between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings\, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy\, psychology\, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. In 1999\, Ernesto was awarded a Personal Chair as Professor of psychotherapy\, counselling and counselling psychology. In 2000\, he was the Recipient of BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. And in 2019\, Ernesto received the BPS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Practice. His most recent book\, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World\, 2nd edition (Sage\, 2015) has been widely praised as a major contribution to the advancement of existential theory and practice. His previous books include: The Interpreted World: an introduction to phenomenological psychology\, 2nd ed (Sage\, 2005); Demystifying Therapy (PCCS\, 2006); Tales of Un-knowing (PCCS\, 2006); and The Mirror and The Hammer: challenging therapeutic orthodoxies (Sage\, 2001). DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Christy Hey\, LPC & Arnaud Verstuyf \n\n\n\nIn-Person & Virtual Hybrid Event:  Live True Counseling 333 SW Taylor Street\, Suite 200 Portland\, OR 97204 and via Zoom \n\n\n\nThe advent of artificial intelligence (AI) brings both promise and peril to the core tenets of existential humanism. While AI has the potential to enhance individual freedom\, automate mundane tasks\, and contribute to a more interconnected society\, concerns arise regarding privacy\, autonomy\, and the erosion of personal responsibility. The collaboration between humans and AI may lead to meaningful synergies or\, if mishandled\, to a sense of alienation. Ethical considerations in mental health practices\, existential anxieties\, and the cultural shifts driven by AI further complicate the relationship between providers and clients. Navigating these complexities requires a careful balance between technological progress and the preservation of existing values and methodologies. In this presentation\, Arnaud will give a basic overview of AI history and where it might be heading; Christy will discuss the current and potential uses and ethical concerns in the field of mental health. \n\n\n\nBefore the ‘Lunch & Learn’\, we recommend watching\, or re-watching\, the movie “Her” from 2013 as a potential – but positive – example of humanity’s relationship with evolving artificial intelligence. \n\n\n\nBios (two speakers): \n\n\n\nChristy Hey\, LPC\, started her career in St. Louis\, Missouri\, as a music therapist working with young people with developmental disabilities and mental health diagnoses. Upon arriving in Oregon in 2009\, she worked at the Oregon State Hospital then Chemawa Indian School before starting her private practice in 2019. Her current practice as a therapist and coach primarily supports neurodivergent adults\, who are often exploring their relationship with social and technological worlds. Through her emerging identity as a digital nomad\, her interests lie at the intersection of culture\, mental health and technology\, traveling and working abroad as much as possible with Arnaud and their two dogs\, Otter and Ellie. \n\n\n\nArnaud Verstuyf’s varied career is marked by both public service and private sector success. He began his professional journey in the private sector\, supporting small businesses\, while pursuing and obtaining a Software Engineering degree from KU Leuven\, Belgium. Following that\, he moved into public service\, providing technological expertise on a pilot project for cultural communication. The next challenge taken was as a consultant\, offering the opportunity to navigate many large companies dealing with supply chain management and production. We will examine the presence of microaggressions which include verbal\, behavioral\, and environmental indignities\, whether intentional or unintentional\, which communicate hostile\, derogatory\, or negative racial\, gender\, sexual orientation\, and religious slights and insults which target a person or group. Because of the great diversity among clients in psychotherapy\, we are focusing this workshop on importance of cultural empathy. We will examine the historical issue of slavery and its relevance to today’s racial tensions\, including historical trauma and the long-term effects of slavery. Finally\, we will examine poetry’s contribution to understanding those of diverse backgrounds. \n\n\n\nDr Nathaniel Granger\, Jr\n\n\n\n\nNathaniel Granger\, Jr\, PsyD\, is a licensed minister\, certified DEIB specialist\, practicing psychotherapist\, author & poet\, transformational speaker\, and executive coach. He has been published in several publications including The New Existentialists and Journal of Humanistic Psychology. Nathaniel is a graduate of the University of the Rockies where he received a Doctorate Degree in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Forensics. He also received a master’s degree in counseling and human Services and bachelor’s degree in psychology from University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. He has served as a Professor of Psychology at Pikes Peak Community College\, Colorado Springs and Adjunct Faculty member at Saybrook University in Pasadena\, California as part of the Existential\, Humanistic\, and Transpersonal Psychology Specialization. Nathaniel Granger\, Jr. is a Past President of APA Division 32 Society of Humanistic Psychology and currently the Treasurer of the Rocky Mountain Humanistic Counseling and Psychological Association. DESCRIPTION:The Way of Redemptive Suffering: Transforming Adversity into Growth \n\n\n\nPresenter: Scott Kiser\, PhD Adjunct Faculty\, Saybrook University\, Assc. Faculty\, University of Arizona Global Campus and Assc. Faculty\, Clackamas Community College \n\n\n\nThis Lunch and Learn will be hybrid \n\n\n\nRegistration ends at 10am on Friday\, August 11th \n\n\n\nThis presentation focuses on the experience of “redemptive suffering\,” that is\, psychological pain and suffering in response to adversity that become constructively transformative and growth-producing rather than only destructive. Through exploring the core dynamics of intentionality and meaning-creation\, participants will see how painful life experiences can be transformed into empowering sources of growth by reinterpreting their essential meaning for the suffering individual. Specifically\, this involves a critical choice to experience painful adversity in terms of an actively-thriving gratitude rather than a sense of passive victimization. The particular adverse experience of clinical depression will be utilized as a concrete example and guiding metaphor\, based on Scott’s own personal experience and doctoral dissertation research. The way of redemptive suffering will\, as well\, be presented as a necessary\, expanded and deepened model of resilience\, extending beyond a prevailing concern with merely reestablishing pre-crisis level functioning. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nScott Kiser holds an MA in Marriage & Family Therapy from George Fox University and a PhD in Psychology from Saybrook University. He teaches psychology at Clackamas Community College\, psychology/doctoral research courses and chair’s dissertation committees at the University of Arizona Global Campus\, and foundational/qualitative research courses at Saybrook University. Scott’s areas of academic expertise and specialization are existential-humanistic psychology/psychotherapy and qualitative (case study and phenomenological) research. He has worked as a professional psychotherapist in community mental health agencies as well as private practice\, involving extensive experience practicing individual\, group\, and family therapy. Scott is also a former EHNW board member.

IH is most challenging when individuals are confronted with existential threats. EH involves holding cherished beliefs regarding the meaning of suffering and life and death loosely enough to revise in light of evidence. \n\n\n\nThis salon discusses the need for existential humility\, which is the ability to confront the realities of life such as death and suffering\, and how to cultivate this humility. It examines the benefits and costs of holding beliefs humbly and explores potential moderating variables such as personality traits and spiritual practices. \n\n\n\nPresenter Bios\n\n\n\nPam Barela\, MA holds a Master of Art Degree in Human Services Counseling with an emphasis on Marriage and Families and completed first doctoral degree\, Clinical Sexology\, in the spring of 2023. Her dissertation discusses the intersection of religion and sexual shame\, purity culture\, and gender roles. Change is only possible through movement.” Modern dance pioneer Martha Graham said “The body says what words cannot.” As clinicians\, how may we bring our and our clients’ attention to their fundamental human agency through movement? What interventions may open possibility towards greater freedom from pain\, fixation\, and limited choices? \n\n\n\nIn this presentation Lavinia will introduce fundamental principles of human movement\, teach experientally guided cues that can help us as clinicians\, as well as clients\, to uncover blockages and restore (and re-story) available potential. Lavinia will present a case history demonstrating how restoring movement to a client’s feet and thorax resulted in the cessation of chronic pain which allowed the client to stop using analgesics and anxiolytics. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nLavinia is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate recently graduated from Portland State University’s Clinical Rehabilitation counseling program. Prior to becoming a mental health clinician\, she worked as a therapeutic Pilates teacher and movement therapist at her studio\, Equipoise ~ enlightened exercise LLC. Since 1998\, she worked primarily with clients who had neurological challenges like CP\, CMT\, and Guillaume-Barre. She has a Master of Science in Clinical Rehabiitation Counseling and BA in English Literature and Creative Writing. Lavinia was also a professional ballet dancer at New York’s Metropolitan Opera Ballet (1992-1998) and a professional writer at the Cincinnati Enquirer and Antenna Magazine. Currently she works at Three Firs Counseling LLC where she brings her somatic and movement experience to her clients who have trauma\, chronic illness\, and disability. As a Registered Associated in the State of Oregon\, Lavinia practices under the supervision of Sarah Williams\, LMFT. \n\n\n\nThe Existential Humanistic perspective has been a part of her life since she can remember. Lavinia’s father was a psychiatrist at the Menninger clinic in Topeka\, KS. Her life-long interest in ontology\, human experience and potential\, and spiritual practices led her to study mutiple disciplines ranging from mystic Christianity\, Kabbalah\, Taosim (she studied QiGong in China)\, Advaita Vedanta\, and Tantra Shaivism (similar to Dzogchen Buddhism). Discuss sex as a problem\, sex as a casualty\, and sex as a symptom of an underlying medical or mental health problem. The session will include  common LGBTQ sexual issues and the issues of other specialized populations. \n\n\n\nBIO \n\n\n\nPam Barela is a private practice Marriage and Family Therapist located in Astoria\, Oregon. Pam is provisionally licensed in Oregon and Utah. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Liberty University\, as well as undergraduate degrees in Marriage and Family Studies and International Business. In the spring of 2023\, Pam expects to complete a dissertation which discussed the intersection of religion with sexual shame\, misogyny\, purity culture\, and gender roles as the final requirement for a PhD in Clinical Sexology. \n\n\n\nThe Existential-Humanistic perspective began to speak to Pam in 2010 when she was going through a divorce and came to the realization that she had lost her sense of feeling grounded andknowing herself. Since then\, Pam has been very intentional with her relationships\, choices\, responsibilities. \n\n\n\nIn her clinical practice Pam primarily sees people struggling with gender\, sexuality\, trauma\, or religion. \n\n\n\nPam loves cooking\, camping\, and a good Netflix binge. DESCRIPTION:Fostering Authenticity: Character Analytic and Somatic Interventionsin Contemporary Orgone (Reichian) Therapy \n\n\n\nFriday\, February 10th\, from 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM \n\n\n\nVirtual by Zoom: (webinar details provided after registration) \n\n\n\nAll Tickets: $10.00 | Affiliates attend FREERegister here!  \n\n\n\nAll humanistic and existentially based therapies share the understanding that many of the symptoms that clients bring to therapy stem from their inability to live an authentic life.  The fostering of authenticity is therefore one of their primary goals.  Contemporary Orgone (Reichian) Therapy\, a humanistic/existential therapeutic approach based upon the integration of Wilhelm Reich’s character analytic and bioenergetic therapy\, gestalt therapy\, person-centered therapy and self psychology\,  approaches this endeavor through addressing the cognitive\, emotional\, behavioral and somatic defenses that prevent one from making full contact with their authenticity.  It is this interlacing of defenses which Reich termed armor.  Armor is a literal somatic and psychological wall which\, though formed as a means of protection in the process of development\, unfortunately prevents one from making direct contact with self and other and thus prevents one from living an authentic life.  In this talk Daniel will present the basic theoretical and therapeutic principals which guide Contemporary (Orgone) Reichian Therapy practice and through a case presentation portray some steps taken on the therapeutic road to authenticity.   \n\n\n\nDaniel Schiff\, PhD is a psychologist in private practice in Portland\, Oregon with 45 years of clinical experience in the practice of somatic psychotherapy from a Reichian/Gestalt perspective.  He was first exposed to the work of Wilhelm Reich\, Fritz Perls and Carl Rogers in the early 1970’s and has incorporated Reich’s character analytic and somatic focus\, gestalt therapy’s ‘here and now’ process orientation\, and the humanistic/existential approach in his clinical work and teaching ever since. Formerly on the adjunct graduate faculty at Antioch University and Argosy University\, he currently teaches somatic psychology in Lewis and Clark’s graduate school of counseling.  As director of the Somatic Psychotherapy Training Institute-PNW he teaches an introductory course in somatic psychotherapy\, a four-year training program in Contemporary Orgone (Reichian) Therapy\, and provides clinical supervision for both therapists seeking licensure and licensed practitioners.
